It is already episode 15. And yet Subaru is useless in combat.
By the usual shounen plot cliche someone would already seen something unique and special about Subaru, and then he would have already learned his secret SPECIAL move that he cannot control and it works when he is in a pinch.

The real-world character arc here appears to be Subaru's maturation from a narcissistic manchild into... I guess we'll see. It reminds me a bit of Renton in Eureka Seven (he's even got the track suit thing going).
I like that it's doing sort of a drilldown into the Shonen archetype a bit - burning spirit isn't real, it's just childish fantasy and if you try that shit with people who know what they're doing you'll get your ass handed to you.
On the other hand we've got the too-perfect clueless love interest - I hope we're all on the same page about her by this point - but the flip side of her thing is a core of pure ice - it's manipulative in the extreme.

It doesn't matter if they are branching futures unless it's brought up, so what it means is that they wanted to show us what happened afterwards while the credits rolled. You don't absolutely need to look into it further than that, though it's interesting. But it does make Subaru's suffering feel more real if those worlds go on after his death. It makes Subaru's existence a very selfish one, but at least he can help one timeline. It's not like things wouldn't get fucked up if he weren't there.

Hey, I like Subaru as a character.
He gets a lot of shit thrown his way, and tries his best to deal with the creeping pain and insanity by fortifying this front of joy and heroism that really isn't who he is.
I knew this by episode 4, since the the question was only, how much exactly would it take for him to truly go insane and just start fucking everything up, and I was happy to see his slip more and more into his despair while still managing to find a light at the end.
Id say the author has done his job pretty effectively. I don't hate subaru for being annoying, I see his annoying demeanor for what it truly is, and watching it get broken down is what makes his character both interesting and likable, to me.

I wouldn't say I dislike Subaru, I took a liking to him in the early episodes and have enjoyed his character progression thus far. On top of that he's made me laugh quite a few times and he has, for the most part, seemed like a reasonable person.
I enjoy the way he interacts with the characters, especially Beatrice.

The fact that they're from a parallel world means absolutely nothing in the plot. And I get a strong feeling his origin will never be relevant. It seems like a cheap way to set up the protagonist of a fantasy series without having to give him a proper backstory.
