Is it difficult to study individual kanji only after getting a good vocabulary? I want to be able to read native material as soon as possible, so I'm grinding the core deck, but later on I also want to expand my knowledge of Japanese by studying kanji, for personal enrichment. Is it messy to do so?

Learning Japanese is suffering for people that don't tend to bother reading VNs

>That complete lack of listening comprehension
>That slower progression because you have to read at your own pace as opposed to voice actors pace

If you're a beginner that wasn't really planing on reading VNs, please do it anyway, for your own sake, they are the perfect study tool

I've been learning this God-forsaken language on and off for about three years now, but 今回からだけがんばっている。 I have basic grammar nailed down but it's vocabulary I'm having problems with. Thankfully I've gotten the hang of writing kanji from notebooks filled with the stuff and it's mostly just grinding now.

This goddamn language is too hard and saps morale easily. But God sent me a sign (or a warning) last week in the form of a cute Japanese girl who said my Japanese was ”すごい上手!”
>>
>>143970346

>>
>>143970043
There's no fucking concrete "term" for what that means, might be gimmick shit like RTK or WK, might be elementary school kanji drills, might be kanken prep material in Japanese,
so I'm asking what this guys plan for studying them.
>>
>>143970222
>Learning Japanese is suffering for people that don't tend to bother reading VNs
That's pretty much no one, it's the prime motivation to learn the language for most people here.
>>

And it will keep sapping it if you keep reading terrible shit like Hanahira.
If your grammar is decent you can read something better no matter how shit your vocab is, texthooker will be helping you with that shit.
>>
>>143970222
I have watched too much anime, now my listening comprehension completely overshadows my vocabulary and grammar understanding and whenever I go through a VN with voices on I feel like neither of those two is improving

That may be the case, but I personally find LNs way more compelling than VNs, and for that reason didn't bother with them for a long time, resulting in my listening comprehension being complete shit compared to my reading skills, and I'm sure there must be at least some other people that are in the same boat
>>
>>143970438
Not him, but I doubt even half the people ITT learn Japanese with VNs as their primary goal. What makes you think so many people in here are into VNs?

Because the best stuff is untranslated, same for LNs. All anime are pretty much instantly subbed, and the big bulk of great manga is too.

Other reasons would be uh, working there? I think this group is the minority for sure.

Sorry ahead of time for the blog post.

Does anyone have experience coming back to learning a language after years of neglecting it? I started learning Japanese in 2007 and stuck with it for a few years, but eventually lost my way. I stopped doing anki and stopped regularly reading or watching Japanese media. I have been to Japan 5 or 6 times but also went to China 5 times and started learning random bits of Mandarin. The end result is that I can't speak either very well at all.

I'm sure if I stuck with it I'd be quite fluent, given that I'd be almost 10 years in. So I'm wondering, what's the best way to get back on the horse? I might still have my old anki deck somewhere, but maybe it's a better idea to start fresh?
>>
>>143972327
Raws for what?

AB has a decent amount of raw manga.
>>
>>143972328
I guess you could start fresh, but learn as quickly as possible if you've really forgotten that much. Else just consuming more media and practicing writing and speaking should be good enough.

Can you use a J>J dictionary?
>>
>>143972328

If you used to regularly read jap media then you can probably pick it back up doing the same thing in months.
>>
>>143972469
>>143972490
I used to use a J>J dictionary but can't anymore. I think there are a ton of things I forgot that I just need a refresher on, so I could probably blast through an Anki deck from scratch and find out what I forgot. I need to review grammar again too.
>>
>>143972418
Well I was thinking any simple story/easy level conversation series, like Dragon Ball.
>>
>>143972327
How about you look in the OP you quoted.
There's a shit ton of manga raws in CoR.
>>
>>143972584
For reviewing grammar a good method might be using the DOJG anki deck and just going through a couple hundred cards, suspending all the grammar you still remember. Don't forget to suspend the repeat cards as well.

Dunno about a new vocab deck. I guess you could do the same, although if you find your old deck you should definitely use that.
>>
How do you guys handle mining shit like words made out of two or more other words? I just encountered 醸し出す, but I've never seen 醸す before, so should I just mine that? Or mine the word that I encountered?

I plan on dedicating an hour of study every day for the next year. I should probably have at least a very basic kid's level grasp on things by then, right?

One hour is a decent starting point I think. You can get the hiragana in week one, then the katakana in week two, that's already a fun place to be.

I just started namasensei's "100 challenge", making an anki deck from it and it's going pretty well, but I noticed that he teaches おんな as "girl" when the dictionary calls it "woman", and that made me pause and think maybe he's teaching other wrong things that I will have to unlearn later. Should I switch to the core 2000 instead or just plough on and fuck the police?

I only had this problem when I started learning kana, which was a few days ago.
Did you have this problem with kanji as well?
I'm just starting to learn vocabulary through core2k/6k and I can distinguish some of the characters and the meanings without much trouble, but maybe because they are very simple (I have a hard time with the readings though).
>>
>>143986792
Follow the guide in the OP.

Also, as advice, try to hear and identify stuff/translation when you're watching anime, it helps a lot building some references.
Also note that there isn't a 100% direct translation for most stuff, so just grasp the concepts.

After you learn the kanas (alphabet) and get a decent grasp of grammar, you should be able to read stuff in about a couple of months.

After that I think people just do their Anki exercises and read whatever stuff they enjoy.

any jukugo dictionaries (if they exist)? im at an intermediate level but i might see a word and recognize entire kanji but not when they are strung together. i ctrl+f'd "jukugo" in both of the resource lists in the google docs so im guessing one doesnt even exist. jisho.org and kanji damage are very limited for this purpose

>>
>>143988089
>Did you have this problem with kanji as well?
I found it easy to differentiate kanji in the beginning. After awhile kanji with only a difference of one radical start to pile up and kanji with similar meanings usually share the same radicals. This makes differentiating kanji harder over time.

General question, but can you write the kanji you know on a piece of paper? Or do you consider a kanji "learned" when you can read it in most of its applications without assistance

>>
>>143988718
I think that article mostly applies to people who don't read or consume content massively. The English step disappears after you see the word in use a few times.
>>
>>143988235
It's not like learning the whole word again, you just have to attach the word you already know to a symbol. At worst you just get to revise a word you already know.
>>
>>143988089
The problem exists with kanji and it's arguably worse, but you can go a long way without running into lookalikes. It also helps that sometimes you can tell which one is in a sentence by looking at the contest and okurigana. I'm not sure yet what's the best way to practice differentiating lookalikes, but I found this page helpful for looking them up: http://www.kanjidamage.com/radicals
>>
>>143988736

Remembering the radicals. Anon said they had tried but it took too much time
>For those who feel that methods like RTK and KanjiDamage take too much time, but don't feel confident diving head-first into kanji as with the kanji-through-vocab approach described above, one method to consider is simply dedicating a week or two to studyingradicals- the 200 or sobuilding-blockswhich make up the kanji.

I dunno how much it takes to memorize 200 radicals by themselves or if it's worth it (probably easier to learn them as you learn the kanji). What I meant is I don't think it's worth memorizing which radicals each and every kanji is made of so you can write them on paper from memory. Being able to recognize the radicals on a kanji is extremely important though.
