The average Japanese LN writer is not some literary genius being held down by his editors and is probably closer to just your typical writing hack who churns out reams of text. Removing one generic concept (harem) just doesn't guarantee you'll get some experimental or well done breakout storyline since the writer is still confined to the limits of the LN genre he is familiar with.
The sad thing about this is if Qualidea Code flops it'll just discourage anyone else from pursuing these types of storylines/mixed casts with non-harem elements.
