Sup /a/, just watched episode 2.
And i really started to think when Farnese started talking about the Band of the Hawk (which she didnt in the Manga if i remember correct), why people dont recognize Guts?
The Band of the Hawk were basically Popstars, and Guts was the second in Command, so how is it possible that barely anyone recognizes him? The only instance i remember is in the Ballroom, when the Muslims attacked. There was some Nobleman who recognized him at least.
Can someone explain?

Because Griffith was the hot-shit leader that mingled with royalty while Casca was the general-chick. Guts was some officer that was absurdly good at fighting, but he didn't really have any distinguishing features. All his crazy-looking trademark shit like the Dragonslayer, robo-arm, and berserker armor happened post-eclipse.

There's no form of photography or anything in Berserk, so the only ones who could recognize him are those who met him in the past. Most people who knew him before the Eclipse are dead, and the ones who aren't were mostly noblemen and random citizens who might have seen him during victory parades and such.

Photographs don't exist in Medieval times, all you get is hearsay, even if someone heard of Guts it would be difficult to recognize him, Guts does have a reputation among warriors as the hundred man slayer, Silat, Isidro, and midland guards know about this legend. The Midland noble guy only recognizes Guts because he's seen him before on the battlefield, and even to him he was just one of Griffiths soldiers.
I liked this episode a lot more than the last one. I guess I got used to the CG, and they used Hirasawa's music. Minimal djent guitars. Hopefully they keep this up.

aside from the 10fps with the gci, it wasn't that bad. Gut's model is still way off and the pacing seems really fucking rushed, but it wasn't a complete disaster like the first episode
next episode will be important since we'll see how they handle the darkness and demons and what not. I have a bad feeling they'll fuck up the tone completely, but we'll see

Again Guts isn't famous because of his appearance or sword, his call to fame is that he killed 100 men. I don't know how numerous or practical greatswords were in medieval times, but Guts old sword isn't as unique as his giant anime sword, especially in a world where huge weapons like horse slayers exist anyway.

We saw like 4 "tall men with big swords" pre eclipse. People know of his legend but nobody really knows what he looks like. Midland solders heard the story of "the 100 man slayer" but they don't really know its him specifically, just some tall dude with a big sword.
He only gets famous once he starts really fucking shit up but thats because he has one arm, no eye, wears all black, swings a sword the size most knights, and cleaves demons in half.

Just like everyone else has said, griffith was the poster boy of the band of the hawk. I like how Guts isn't well known. It makes him more mysterious to other characters. I love the moments when people watch him cutting 10 people in half with one blow thinking "so this is the black swordsman..... sugoi"
Guts is so badass in the new anime besides the mediocre animation I'm really enjoying it. I hope Farnese crawls all over his dick.

After the civil war in Midland Guts disappeared, the band of the Hawk collapsed, Guts got injured during the eclipse, and Guts got more injured fighting Apostles. So he looks pretty different than when they would have seen him.

It's a fucking magical fantasy set in the dark ages, they didn't have internet, tv, movies and other media flashing across the globe like we do making famous people instantly recognizable to everyone. All they likely know about him is he was a badass motherfucker and probably that he used a big sword, that's about it. And even if they did, what the hell would that change? Would people start saying "Woah check it out, it's that hardcore motherfucker that did all that stuff in that big war with that Band of Hawks, lets give him special treatment". It's not a shitty battle shounen, you don't get your dick sucked by everyone on the planet just because you're really good at fighting. Guts gets the respect he deserves from the people that actually get to know him, hell almost every single member of the Band which numbered in the hundreds looked up to him as a strong and unshakable big brother figure. That kind of dynamic is precisely what makes Guts as a character and his relationship with other people so substantial, it's not just some shallow one dimensional interaction, the characters actually learn about eachother and their relationships grow and change accordingly. Also why I consider Guts and Casca to be one of the best executed examples of a romance between two characters in manga to date, they've gone through so much together and truly fell in love. Even after everything that's happened he still lives purely for her sake, only time will tell if he ever gets her back though.

Holy shit, they are actually using most of their budget for 2d animation on fucking flashbacks.
2D needs to go entirely. It looks bad because there is discrepancy between low fps 3D and higher fps 3D. Also getting rid of expensive 2D means mkre budget for 3D. The technique is good but execution is still poor. With time this will be an amazing technique and make drawing obsolete.

Did anyone else feel like episode 2 was a significant improvement? I liked it a lot. There are still a few QUALITY moments, but I feel like with the introduction of a more colorful palette in the Iron Chain Knights I've grown to appreciate the art style more.
It helps that the show is now firmly into Conviction material instead of just trying to condense the Black Swordsman arc into 20 minutes.

I don't know why, but it feels odd Mirua refers this as a fantasy manga. Fantasy series usually focus on worldbuilding while Berserk is centered around vengeance and salvation.

There should have been zero flashbacks, mention of the lost children arc, the scene with puck getting guts to call him puck-sama, no mention of the band of the hawk, and the scene with puck talking about becchi.
And the next episode is a near complete rewrite of what happens in the manga. This adaption is a disaster.
Not to mention the art, music, sound, and animation is still completeshit.

Yeah, Serpico and Azan look okay. The knights look good. There were more hand-painted backgrounds in this episode, which helped. Actually, all of the characters look fine except for their faces. All of the facial expressions look so wonky and stilted, and the cel shading falls across their facial features in the weirdest ways. The only character that ends up looking good is Serpico, and that's because he just doesn't emote with his face very much, not even in the manga.

I read it annually. The adaptation is good for what it is.
The entire problem is axing retribution and we'll have some rewrites until we get to a point where that's solved. Best case scenario would have been it starting with skull knight breaking through the black sun. Retribution is my favorite arc too so I should be mad but at least this isn't golden age anymore. We'll never get the 1:1 animation.

This episode's story was pretty faithful overall. Yes there was some stuff cut and some other scenes added, but nothing I could reasonably see calling a disaster.
As for the next episode, whatever it is is supposedly written by Miura, not the show writers just doing whatever they want.

Your complaints are simply retarded. Nobody ever expects any adaptation to be 100% faithful, and this episode was more accurate than most adaptations get.
As for other things, yeah, the CGI still sucks, the music still mostly sucks, and so do the sound effects, that's not what I was saying. I know the anime is shit, but at least that episode followed manga properly.

The art style is a valid complaint, though I've grown to enjoy it (or have become complacent with it) from this newest episode. You gotta understand, Berserk adaptations will ALWAYS be low budget. they also skip over guts' pre-merc days + gloss over his bonding with band of the hawk, but those are the only bits of note they snip out. everything else is intact, and prettier by a large margin than the '97 anime.

Think about it this way: she's basically a Catholic. In the world of Berserk, everyone used to be pagan and worshiped nature, and was in tune with nature and the astral plane. The Holy See Religious Order took hold throughout the land and, just like the real Catholic church, rooted itself on pagan sites of worship, displacing paganism as the dominant religion. As a result, a lot of people people lost their attenuation to the astral plane (where the elves live) and basically forgot how to access it. The Holy See religion displaced that part of their mind/spirit as well. Thus, especially religious people find it difficult to "see" things in the astral plane.

I don't think the Berserk TV series was rushed except for the Eclipse. They could've cut the episode where they first meet Corbowitz so they could make room for Skull Knight, the rescue, and Guts finding out Casca was crazy, and him taking the Dragonslayer.
Well, it was better than the first one. The Golden Age flashbacks were good, some scenes were kind of exciting, Serpico and Azan were pretty good, and the horse scene was actually really funny. Hai Yo is great and the soundtrack was overall better for this episode. The pacing and editing also chilled the fuck out in this episode which made it way better. I'm not exactly a fan of the original stuff the show's doing and the ED's still garbo.

Have you seen fucking Midland post-Eclipse? It's like a goddamn wasteland. Every town or village is ravaged all to shit, the King lost his goddamn mind a la Griffith, and everyone is too focused on staying alive to daydream about legendary warriors of the past.
Guts' period of fame didn't last a long time, really. It's more than conceivable that only the surviving members of the Midland elite would recognize him.
Just think about that first encounter with Zodd. Zodd, a guy who should be the most famous legend in the world due to his exploits more or less, isn't recognized immediately by his appearance. They only believe it's him or that he exists at all by seeing the havoc of the initial encounter with Band of the Hawk soldiers. Fame is a tricky thing in a medieval fantasy setting -- you might know someone's name but have no idea what they look like.

Maybe because game CGI is different level and it's fucking different tier of salary? Do you really think someone will spend their time for shit tier salary? Or maybe you think CGI is EZ and fast? I assume all people who use """"" """"" are just autistic.
The real issue is that I don't think they actually wrote any code to solve any of their problems. Like I really think they are just using off-the-shelf prosumer grade software and trying to tweak it enough to get the results they want. If they invested in the technology more and had some software written (a totally custom shader pipeline, post-processing, animation, etc.) they could have achieved a much more convincing effect.

The thing is, I like technology. I am very much pro-automation for just about every industry, and I do think that developing the right tools could lead to really cool looking shit. But instead they are using 3D to just try and emulate a 2D style... why? For nostalgia's sake? There's a reason that anime has a flat, clean style—it's not just an aesthetic choice, it also makes the animation process easier and faster. So to try and emulate it with 3D just seems like... idk it's like people who write audio plugins to emulate tape hiss. If that's the effect you want, just record to tape, otherwise, use your technology in a more exploratory manner.

I haven't suffered for as long as pretty much every other Berserk fan, having only read the manga this year. I'm starving for more Berserk after catching up, finishing the 97 anime, watching the movies, and playing the games, and I haven't suffered enough to feel like the new anime is torture, but I can definitely see how horrible this must be for long-time fans who have been dying for more Berserk.
