I'm not with you on this one. The anime was pretty inspired for piles of reasons, especially since anime in general has gotten very introspective lately, with at least a bit of self-parody in almost every show. And ultimately most shows still refuse to buck the bigger and more important expectations (like around what the big pay-off of a show should be) and end up just as tired as what they're mocking.
I think the way Chiyo is genuinely fit for shoujo romance and knows it's not going to happen that way, but then forgets (and if you're into it, hopefully you as the audience forget too) long enough for the punchline works just often enough for one season. Between that and the near-perfect mirrors of gender stereotypes, I think it just does a great job of betraying your trust enough that you don't trust any of its first impressions by the end. And you shouldn't.
Not saying it's the pinnacle of anime or anything, but I think it was way better than average and worth the attention.
