I'm talking about the mean time between failures of the Panther's final drive gears. According to the post-war French evaluation of panthers they used until the mid 1950s, the final drive gears on the panthers Ausf. A and G had an average life expectancy of 150 kilometers. This was not the only deficiency they found either. There was also the lack of a unity periscope for the gunner, which made the target handoff between the commander and gunner that much more difficult, the turret drive on the Ausf. A was dependent on the engine RPMs, and was still slow, a problem not fixed on the Ausf. G either. The gun was easy to handle as long as the equilibrator remained pressurized, but as soon as it lost pressure, the gun was practically locked in a fully depressed position. Another discovery they made, even though it was technically possible for the panther to neutral steer, this was not recommended as it could over stress the transmission and shred the gearing
And this was just the panther, the problems with the bigger tiger II, while more difficult to find good details on were very likely even worse

well, it wasn't broken, it was just designed for a tank that was 10-15 tonnes lighter than the panther was. And they halfway fixed it in the Ausf. G, because there was a second problem i neglected to mention in the panther's final drives. The housings were not sturdy enough, which caused them to flex and get bound up in the gearing. However, remember that france had both Ausf. As and Ausf. Gs, and if memory serves me correct, the majority of panthers on the western front were Ausf. Gs

>>143855646
oh yeah, the T-34 models of 1941 and 1942, the gearbox wasn't the problem child so much as the engine, oh god that engine. The V-2 was an aluminum block V-12 diesel with no steel cylinder liners. This was bound to cause all sorts of problems, notably the failures of the heads, blocks losing compression and so on. These were only made worse by the movement of the factories over the Urals. However, by 1943 you began to see significant improvement, with engines and transmissions surpassing 200 warrantied hours. This was still nothing compared to tovarishch Emcha which as i said before, was cracking 300 warrantied hours from the time they first received them even on the least reliable components of the drivetrain
>>143855445
The german tank crews did scomplain, especially the drivers that had to deal with the Panthers overcomplicated gear shift and driving systems compared ot other german tanks. Hell Tiger 1s gear shift worked better and was much more much simpler
>>143854722
>the last orgy of the girls
>>143855806
well, the thing is the Tiger I kind of worked. I mean it was no Panzer IV, let alone M4 sherman in terms of reliability, but with a tank that heavy it was definitely exceeding expectations. Which is what happens when a tank actually goes through proper development and testing, unlike the panther which when it first arrived also liked to catch on fire from the Ausf. >>143855953
i mean you could find some complicated bits in a few US tanks even. It's just that the individual parts had been proven for a while by that point, just that they were arranged in a complicated looking setup.
Just a simple example, the drivetrains of the M5 Stuart and M24 Chaffee light tanks. They both used the controlled differential which we had been using since the early '30s, but they were powered by twin cadillac V8 engines, each mated to a Hydramatic transmission that were then joined together in a single transfer case, which handled neutral and reverse. This sounds awfully complicated for sure, but remember, the Cadillac V8s had been used in passenger cars for years and were very well proven, as were the hydramatic transmissions. Even the transfer cases were a well understood component, being based on the cases found in bulldozers and agricultural tractors.
>>143856212
With hydromatic, do you mean the planetary gearbox with a hydraulic torque converter instead of a frictional clutch?
Didn't the Pershing have problems with those?
>>143856212
>twin cadillac V8 engines
Was it normal for WWII tanks to have two engines? I was just watching Bovington's Matilda restoration videos and they mentioned it having twin engines as well.
Our glorious commander didn't nothing wrong
>>143856193
Yukari's smile is surprisingly heartwarming in this.
>>143856330
That was the torqmatic, same concept but a some differences in design both made by Allison though, and yeah it did have problems, part of why the T20 series was never accepted into service and why the pershing was replaced by the Cross-Drive equipped M46 starting in 1949. They could never quite get it to work, it was a much bigger transmission than the hydramatic and it had a new type of torque converter too iirc

Isn't her smile always heartwarming?

the fun part is that if Citadel took place early the germans would had win (according to Wehrmacht generals) but the damn Fuhrer's directives to wait for the Tigers and Panthers
>>143856382
ehhhh, not rare, but a single engine was generally preferable. Yeah the matilda did have two engines, straight 6 diesels to be precise, first made by AEC and later by Leyland. The M4A2 also had a twin engine setup, but that was 2 engines on a common crankshaft with just one transmission if memory serves correct. It was really down to what was available, because like I said, one engine was the most desirable, but you used what was easily available, which is why the Chrysler A57 existed, and why Germany stuck with the Maybach HL320 even in the tiger II despite it being even more underpowered than it was in the panther or tiger I
>>143856432
Yukaris smile always warms my heart.

>>143856633
>riveted
aren't those the Detroit onesand the shitty ones?
>>143856633
Riveted is the most expensive and time consuming production method, so if you have the resources for high quality welding or casting you want to avoid it.
Cast vs Welded on the other hand is a trickier one to settle. For example, the fantastic rounded shape of the A1 model sherman and the even better elliptical shape of the M48 Patton would not have been possible with welding rolled plates. On the other hand, bad castings are much costlier and unless you have high industrial capacity and excellent moldmaking and steel quality control, like the US or post 1943 Russia, it's not worth it frankly. But if you do, it's an excellent way to maximize the protective ability of a tank's armor by using complex shapes to make a shell's job more difficult
>>143856633
Cast is the most aesthetic and can bounce shells, but is a bitch to repair because it's all one piece.
Welded isn't nearly as strong because of all the joints and seams, but is much more practical to maintain.
Riveted is just a plain bad idea unless you can't afford anything else.Actual engineers ITT, how'd I do?
>>143856633
Does tempering and heat treating the metal give a significant difference in the defense of the tank?I always thought it does so I'd rather have welded heat treated and tempered metal hull.
>>143856633
what's point of adding extra armor in such an small place at the side?
>>143856768
oh yeah i forgot about the repair thing, good job on catching that. Also with welding, if the welds are high quality, the joint can be stronger than the metal surrounding it, but on the other hand, the welded tanks did have corners, which are always going to be a structural weak point in a squared off shape. I wish i could say more but i'm just a failed engineering student who switched majors to avoid alcoholism, business now
>>143856746
Riveted was the Lee, and it was only riveted because we needed tanks the day before we'd ordered them so there was a lack of time to set up good casting/welding infrastructure. And even then there were the M3A1 and M3A2 with cast and welded hulls respectively, but those were only limited production due to the M4's arrival.
>>143856824
That's where they store the other shells apparently. So shoot there for fireworks.

What exactly is meant by "take the pay" there? It is unlikely to be meant in the literal sense, as another line in the song is "How shall we spend the money we earn?"
Is this slang of some sort, and if so, what does it mean?

I'm guessing it's means "being a soldier is such a wonderful job that it feels bad to take money for doing it," or something like that.
>>143858542
There's seven OVAs and the film. If you really need more after that, there's a bunch of spinoff manga which vary in quality.

Ah, I see. I had assumed it was some sort of era/british-specific colloquialism for... something. I dunno, being an officer or paying to avoid conscription or somesuch.

This. Estimated posibility of the crew getting the tank to fully functional status within the game. Basically the kind of useless in-game statistics that sports comentators tend to talk about when nothing else is happening in a game. Particularly in sports like senshado, which often are a few hours of boredom and a few minutes of BOOM, yet the comentators have to fill that time anyways.

Consider this: Senshado is the rythmic gimnastics of the GuPverse. Having a male tank mechanic is like having a male gymnastics trainer -i.e, nothing to rise an eyebrow at.

This makes me wonder how they handle camerawork and commentary. For a sports story, there really isn't much mention of it.
The best plan I can think of is a mix of quadcopter drones and vehicle-mounted cameras, both on the exterior of the tank and the gunsight.
The commentators could get live damage reports from the tanks' onboard computers, as well as a feed of each school's radio channel.
I'd honestly like more interaction with the audience in S2, if we get it. It could make the battles a bit more interesting.

betwen OVAs an movie, read Little Army (the prequel, not the spinoff) - it makes you understand better what's happening

You're not into multiple stage bicycle races if you need to ask
>>143859145
I don't think drones would work, as it could give away the positions of the tanks.
It's been shown that there are recon planes that the judges use, It's probable that the media has their own plane following the judges as to not give away the positions.
So aside from the onboard cams probably aerial footage from the judges perspective.
>>143859254
The thing with multiple stage cycling is there is a predetermined path where the bikes go but the tanks can go anywhere and will go anywhere.

The problem with having so many great designs is that most of them won't get any merch.
The only Momo you can get is the chibi one from the pit-road tanks.
