Can we have an old anime thread?
What are you watching anon?

Ranma 1/2
>>143468598
I actually just started watching the Dirty Pair, coincidentally.
>>143468598
The first Lupin series
why'd Lupin just try and burn that fake psychic to death?
Votoms
>>143468598
just "finished" Dangaioh
Mia is a lovely leotard lady
>>143468598
I re-watched Golden Boy recently. Anyone who hasn't seen it should immediately go and watch it. The whole series is less than 3 hours.
I'm watching Ashita no Joe S2.
Some parts are better executed than S1 but its version of Joe vs. Carlos was disappointing. Both the manga and S1 did it better.
>>143469056
Episode 1 of Dangaioh was good but it was still annoying how the girls couldn't pilot the mech.
Ep 2 was well animated but horribly written
Ep 3 was generally boring
I want to read the yuri spin-off
>>143468887
Because Lupin kills people all the time? Even in red jacket and the modern specials he blows people up.
The manga version of the story is better because it ends with Lupin's dick getting burnt since it didn't have the anti-fire substance on it
>>143470574
And yes there is a yuri spinoff
>>143468858
Whats the appeal of Dirty Pair.
>>143470716
why it's not fully scanned I do not know
>>143470726
its a pro tranny anime and thus very progressive
>>143470482
sold!
Trying to watch Shamanic Princess, but it's really boring. Will probably finish it in not too long, though, only 6 episodes in total.
Also started Lodoss War TV a while ago, but havent' seen anytihng in a while. It got too scary and then i jst stopped and havent started again.
And Angel's Egg two days ago. Took a lot of effort to not fall asleep.
Also started Perfect Blue, but it's so horrible to watch. Will force myself through the rest in the coming weeks though
>>143470848
>It got too scary
I was never scared of an anime in my life
>>143470482
Golden Boy is really good mainly because of the anime execution. If you think about it thematically it's some of the most pathetic self-insert fantasy in the world (I'm a weird creep that sexually harasses women BUT I'M SECRETLY A WONDERFUL GENIUS THAT NO ONE APPRECIATES) and the manga is drawn in a way that is both technically horrible and not funny. But the fucking fantastic staff of the anime makes the anime a fantastic experience and it's easy to forgive the awkwardness.
Also I had no idea Kitakubo himself animated one of my favorite moments https://sakuga.yshi.org/post/show/17628/animated-character_acting-golden_boy-hiroyuki_kita

Two cute women wearing little clothing have crazy space adventures.
If you can't see the appeal, I hate to tell you this but you're probably gay.
>>143471091
Worth a check. Does the first episode give a good representation of the show.
>>143471114
To be honest I haven't seen the TV series, but if you want to get a good idea of the fanservice, banter, and zany adventures/scale of destruction, watch Project Eden. Second or third VHS I ever bought, I remember it fondly.
>>143470994
it ranges from kinda dull to fucking amazing.
Finished blue seed some time ago, the ovas are worth the show.
>>143470848
Perfect Blue is one of those anime movies that you're not allowed to dislike on the internet. That's fine if you don't like it but only because you're on 4chan.
>>143471114
the first TV show is possibly the least good part of the franchise.
watch the OVAs and the movies if the TV show doesn't hook you.
>>143468598
I'm watching Cowboy Bebop for the first time, actually. On episode 16
I've already been spoiled on the ending but it's the journey that matters
>>143471278
I don't really like Cowboy Bebop.
The main characters are all goofy or annoying, I don't like the soundtrack and I can't take it seriously.
the animation and direction is good though
>>143471278
I wish I could watch Bebop for the first time again. Don't forget to watch the movie after you're done with the series.
Currently watching Nadesico, something that has been on my list for a long time. On episode 7 and not sure why this gets so much love. I get all the references, but it's a mediocre satire so far.
>>143470994
previous anon nailed it, the good episodes are fabulously entertaining, the bad ones aren't very interesting. Personally I thought the first TV series was the most fun part of the franchise.

It's not that I dislike it, it's just really uncomfortable

It's good, not BEST ANIME EVER but certainly very polished and well executed.

Monkey punch always reminds me of the art that you used to see in Mad Magazine in the 1980s, wonder if either of them influenced each other.
>>143469056
>>143470574
Overall, Dangaioh is a lovely but dated piece of animation with terrible writing highlighted by the fact that it has no ending.
The first 2 parts of this were pretty good. Shame about the final part being such shit
It's old now
God I miss 80's character designs
>>143471612
>you're not meant to take it that seriously
you're meant to be able to feel sad and melancholic when shit gets serious.
But I can't, because the main cast look (and act) like complete clowns.
Seriously, Spike has clown hair.
I can't even suspend my disbelief enough to accept that a woman fell in love with that goofball, so how am I supposed to feel sad when I learn about his "tragic backstory"?
I watched this recently. TMS put it up on YouTube for free (strangely with only the French and Spanish dubs).
It was pretty good, can't believe how it was so dark and meant for children at the same time though.
>>143471642
>but dated
>but
How is it a bad thing?
Like holy shit do you go to the Louvre to check out Delacroix's paintings and then go "Mh. It's fine, but it's so dated, it's obvious that it was made in the XIXth century."
>>143471662
I only watched part 1 and it was total trash.
The animation stand-outs weren't even that amazing, it had some of the least interesting Anno animation for example. The Kanada-style action near the end was probably the best but by that point I was just too annoyed with it to get any enjoyment out of it.
The writing was HORRIFYINGLY bad. The scene you posted is the dumbest shit in the fucking world and made me straight up hate it.
>"I stole a super-powerful secret mecha from a dangerous organization that wants me dead, so I'll let a schoolgirl film it and show the film to her school"
>"OH NO SHE GOT KILLED!!! THOSE MONSTERS!!!!!!!!"
The characters had no personality and were just "80s sexy anime people" with autistic dialogue
I've been watching Goldran, it's ok I guess.
>>143471700
poofy hair is so good
>>143471720
It seems like anime just isn't for you if you need designs that are boring and realistic and completely non-cartoony to feel sad for them.
>>143471751

>watching anime and expecting it to make sense
good writing is just a nice added bonus that happens every now and then, it's not what you should watch anime for. Just welcome it when it's good and don't pay attention to it when it sucks.
Pre-2000 that I've been watching the last few months:

Cowboy Bebop

4chan today is trying its best to make me feel so fucking old. and its working
Hello since there isn't a QTDDTOT thread I'll ask it here.
I remember bits and parts from an old anime but for the sake of me can't remember the name. I'll try to describe what I remember been well over 25 years since I watched it.
So there are some crooks trying to rob a pyramid shaped glass bank with a tank. In comes for the rescue a cop that well he can't defeat the crooks. Lo and behold here comes the cyborg soon to be partner with the human cop and saves the day.
The human doesn't want this to happen but it does anyway and ofc at the end they become friends or something like that.
Sorry for my English not my first language. Thanks in advance.
>>143471795
It's not necessarily a bad thing, but, in some cases, it bothers me a little (sometimes a lot).
>>143471795
>>143471642
I think he means the fact that it was made in the OVA era where if stuff wasn't successful enough it didn't get an ending. But saying something is bad because it doesn't have an ending is really, really fucking dumb. It's not like they didn't WANT to give it an ending, they just couldn't. That's just the way anime was produced then, they made episodes and released them and if it was successful they could continue it.
>>143471700
I love this style and I don't know why
Must be the poofy hair
>>143471869
>It seems like anime just isn't for you if you need designs that are boring and realistic and completely non-cartoony to feel sad for them.
Nigger you don't understand.
The main cast of Cowboy Bebop IS drawn in a fairly realistic style. That's what makes their goofy-ass looks even more jarring.
But even then, there are ways to get around that issue, namely PROPER DRAMATIC PACING.
Look at Trigun for example: it's paced appropriately for the goofy-ass comedic main character to become a strong pathetic figure, because the director doesn't rush us through his backstory on the last few episodes, and gives him adequately slow and steady character development.
Spike just fucks around for most of the show and then BAM! CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! FEEL SAD FOR THIS CLOWN!
>>143471915
There's a colossal difference between just making a 'fun plotless shit' OVA like say Dead Leaves or Birth and trying to be plot-driven but failing really, really badly.
>>143472098
Yeah I can't say I agree with Trigun being better than Bebop but I honestly don't care enough to argue
>>143472097
it's a combination of many things, mostly the fact that all those characters look fit, have cheeks, and of course fluffy hair
>>143472142
>>143472098
Also I would not call Bebop realistic. The designs are very anime-esque and stylized.
>Not watching old shows for girls
I'm rewatchimg Hokuto no Ken with the French voices ,shit's super hilarious
>>143472109
I agree that part 1 had really terrible writing that prevented me from really caring about the main cast, but the fact that it was mystery-focused was enough to keep me interested in the story.
Part 2 is much more focused and has a stronger pacing. The characters' motivations still make little sense but they're carried out in an engaging way.
>>143472190
Well it's not fucking Perfect Blue but it's a lot more realistic than your average show of that era.
>>143472272
AH, POURQUOI TOUT LE MONDE EST-IL TOQUÉ DE TOKI?
>>143472280
I'll admit that part of the reason I'm really mean to Megazone is that it gets away with so much dumb writing and gets no flak from the "old school anime fan" clique but then people act as if things like Mad Bull 34 and Apocalypse Zero are "unintentionally funny" and you're "laughing at them, not with them" even though they're obviously absurdist comedies and were written in an utterly self aware way.
>>143472328
I don't think so. I think you're mistaking the characters not having huge eyes with realism. The eyes are still stylized and anime-esque, they're just smaller because in animation mature characters generally have smaller eyes and big eyes are associated with youth.
>>143472272
I heard the French dub changed all the dialogue on purpose. Like the English Ghost Stories dub.
>>143472109
Megazone 23 was originally supposed to be a TV series with 12 episodes, but they had huge budget cuts midway through the production phase and had to change the format. Which also enabled them to have sex scenes.
I don't know how much that excuses the dumb writing but it explains a lot of it.

>I haven't seen people treat Apocalypse Zero as shlock
You've not spent much time discussing old anime online then. It's considered the worst anime of all time and the manga also gets shit on by default (the manga's better, the anime's still pretty good).

I heard it's an anime mostly liked by people who don't like anime. Compare the number of people who watch anime with people who don't, and you can see the non-anime fans outnumber the rest. There is also strong nostalgia for it, most Americans grew up with it on TV so they will rate it higher
I've watching the first season of Lupin III. About halfway through now. Shit's pretty comfy, I like the soundtrack.
>Lupin.... He's a nice man! But he's cool...

>>143472948
Les Chevalier du Zodiaque sont pas mal en français aussi
>>143472886
The only reason it has that reputation is because average anime fans are weeaboo faggots and generally shove the most obnoxious things into people's faces. There is plenty of other anime that's easily understandable by western viewers that just didn't become popular because it never aired on TV.
Bebop is also extremely Japanese, just in subtler ways that the kind of people who think saying Cowboy Bebop is overrated shit makes them smart knowledgeable fans would not notice. Something like it could not have come out of the US by any stretch.
>>143472886
>>143472777
it's just entry-level anime for people with "standards" (aka people who don't like anime, as opposed to people who watch Naruto), like Akira, Nausicaa and Ghost in the Shell.
>>143473023
It was good, I was surprised the torrent on bakabt had the french dub in it
>>143473059
>it's just entry-level anime for people with "standards" (aka people who don't like anime
Liking anime doesn't mean watching garbage that you need to have trained yourself into being an autist to enjoy. I watch more anime than any other form of entertainment and I probably "hate anime" by the standards of you mental midgets.
>>143473125
Are you english or French so i can write in a more understandable way ?
>>143473184
French but I got warned and post deleted for frogposting on /a/ before so I don't risk it anymore.
>>143473141
Wow that's a lot of assumptions you're making.
But I shouldn't have said "entry-level", since most of the people who like those movies and shows never bother to look for more things like it.
Ask a big fan of Cowboy Bebop / Miyazaki / GitS / Akira if he's ever watched a SLIGHTLY more obscure but equally beautiful anime and he'll say no.
>>143470680
Might just be me, but Lupins artstyle seems really similar to that of Getter Robo.
>>143473270
>equally beautiful
I thought you were implying it's a bad show that only silly plebs like or w/e given the general attitude of the discussion.
"I dislike anime BUT" types just haven't been shown the more obscure stuff because generally weeaboo kids flock to things like Naruto and Kill la Kill (admittedly KLK is much better than Naruto but still) which are absolutely not the best examples of anime. "Fandom-friendly" things that generally attract nerdy autists because they're just shallow enough to have some basis in plot and character but otherwise have a lot of blanks for people to fill with empty discussion.
I won't say they have no fault at all and obviously doing your own research is good, but "people who really like anime" don't make a very good case for it. Anime & manga ended up being my favorite form of entertainment DESPITE the fans.
Some good shows are lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to get mainstream western approval, others are not. Instead of saying "BEBOP IS ENTRY LEVEL BABBYS FIRST ANIMU" just recommend the obscure good stuff.
Best VA

In a way it kind of is because it portrays goofy masculinity in a similarly irreverent way, but they're very different styles.
I'm watching turn A Gundam, and it's disappointingly mediocre.
I just finished watching Dominion Tank Police.
I could feel the DUDE PHILOSOPHY LMAO creeping in at times but it wasn't as bad as people say; and it was mostly to create character development so it's OK.
Still very very fun.

I have no fucking idea what MP's influences are. He says Mort Drucker from Mad Magazine is his favorite artist but aside from some basic similarities in the lanky proportions for a lot of characters he draws very differently.
I know a lot of people hate John K (Ren & Stimpy guy) and he can be dumb but one of the smartest points he made was categorizing two extremes of cartooning as "conservative cartooning" and "radical cartooning"; not as a "good vs bad" thing (he doesn't see "conservative" as "bad" at all) but basically "conservative cartooning" means simply comedically exaggerating reality while "radical cartooning" means super-stylized stuff that doesn't care for representing what things actually look like but simply making super-loose, fun drawings driven by appealing design and inventiveness.
Mort Drucker feels like one of the best examples of "conservative cartooning", while MP's art fits the "radical" definition. perfectly

>>143474274
>>143474337
I'd say Joe is god-tier as far as Dezaki goes while Cobra is pretty good. The source material is alright, the execution makes it good.
>>143474289
It looks really cool but I'm afraid to watch it because I know people fucking HATE it.
They also hate the OVAs because "IT'S NOT FINAL FANTASY!!!" even though the atmosphere is totally fitting for something taking place in the same universe as FF5 which is one of the least serious FFs.

>>143473630
>>143473270
To add to my wall of text I don't think people who like Bebop but are ignorant of anime would be dismissive of other works that are similarly easily understandable by a western audience and well-executed. Stuff like Lupin I could easily see appealing to a Bebop fan.
Same with Akira. Akira, Bebop, GITS etc have western appeal but they're still very anime in their story content and you can easily say "if you like [thing] you will also like [thing]".
I think "I hate anime but muh Ghibli" fans are much more difficult because Ghibli anime really is its own thing in style and its fans can develop the retarded belief that "if it's not exactly like this it's not good". The only thing you can really recommend to such people is proto-Ghibli works made made by the same main staff before Ghibli existed.
>>143474738
And speaking of old anime, a series that is very anime and yet should easily be liked by the kind of people who like Bebop is Giant Robo. It just didn't air on TV and thus it's not easily found by that aduience.
>>143474738
Yeah but I was explaining why some people put it in their "top 10 anime" lists. it's because they simply don't bother looking for a lot of anime.
>>143474882
Yeah, Giant Robo is fucking great.
>>143474885
That's implying that someone with anime experience can't still find Bebop special just because its execution is really, really high-caliber. I've come across many people on and off of /a/ who went VERY deep into anime and still think Bebop is great.
The only reason it's not top 10 material for me is because I prefer stuff that's looser and crazier than it. It's too conservatively anime-like in style to be super-special to me.
>>143474998
>>143474885
And really that's why people, "normies" or otherwise, list Bebop as a favorite. It's a very, very well executed show; there's a lot of stuff like it but it's generally not as painstakingly well made.
>>143475174
>very, very well executed
only on a purely abstract, look-at-me-I'm-directing level.
Cause I'll be fucking damned in that little cunt was a well-executed "endearing genki comic relief" and not an early example of moeblob shitstain.
>>143475290
Nah; in a purposeful way that creates a very specific and thoughtful type of atmosphere.
I've seen shows that just felt like 'muh style' for the sake of it, Bebop is not one.
>>143475388
Bebop is one.
What you call "a thoughtful type of atmosphere" is just the affected aloofness jazzfags revel in.
>>143475452
Nice try but I'm not even a jazz fan (funk is more fun).
>>143475485
I'm not saying you're one, I'm just saying that you got a taste of what jazz posers masturbate to through Bebop.
Because Bebop is a purely masturbatory show; which is entirely fine, but obnoxious if your tastes don't align with the creator's.
>>143468598
Why does Kei's bangs get me aroused?
>>143475571
You're masturbatory
>>143475571
Nah, it's obviously wide-appeal. America might have liked it more but it's not like it wasn't successful in Japan.
I think you're thinking too much about "the kind of people who like this" instead of judging the show as its own thing and letting it make its own impression on you. I just looked up the upvoted "overrated shit" reviews on MAL out of curiosity because of this thread and they make the same mistake.

hey, Jazzfags aren't the only people who think fedoras are cool.
remember that in the late 2000s, wearing a trilby was mainstream as fuck, so of course it has a wide appeal, but its appeal is based on a masturbatory gimmick.
I seriously went into Cowboy Bebop expecting it to be great and cool and it was even before I'd watched a lot of anime. I found that it was hit-or-miss and I despised its "laid-back but action-heavy" atmosphere, and I gave no shit about the characters because they all look ridiculous without being funny.

I think a little bit of backlash is deserved. The thing I'm trying to get across isn't that it's liked by fedora-wearers, it's that it has the same appeal as wearing a fedora in 2010.
And it's a really dumb, really clunky appeal that requires a lot of leniency to appreciate.

The visuals are also fucking MILES above the horribly storyboarded and choppy MD Geist. But I see people claim MD Geist is underrated silly fun and I NEVER see anyone defend Genocyber.

You should check out Takahashi's other works if you haven't seen them like Dougram or Layzner(pic related here). It would probably be one of my favorite animes. Sweet ass OST, first part is a space horror while the second part is Gundam meets Fotns. It's also surprisingly darker than VOTOMS, even though the MC tries not to kill people.

It might have been understandable to hype up the Akira movie solely based on it being different from American animation back in the 90s, but nowadays there's no excuse.
It's just another butchering of a great manga into a mediocre adaptation, but with fantastic animation and music this time.
>>143477874
>not recognizing this
>even has a character name in the filename
>>143477870
I didn't watch 2 because I did not like 1.
It actually had some really good animators working on it like Masahito Yamashita and Obari but they were not assigned to well-storyboarded scenes and they couldn't really do much to save what they were given. The color scheme in the final battle was also HORRIBLE and made the fight impossible to read.
I dunno how Genocyber is directed by the same guy, there's nothing in Geist as visually striking as this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJ0fZnsbhUE#t=39m32s
>>143477927
>It's just another butchering of a great manga into a mediocre adaptation
It's a movie based on a very long manga, of course it won't match its depth you autist. Doesn't mean it's a bad film when taken as its own experience.
There's also barely any anime as well-animated as it to this day.
>>143477805
MD Geist isn't silly but it's fun.
Some people defend Genocyber on 4chan and they're entirely right.
Just watch it all, it's seriously a good OVA. Like, remember in the 90s when we called violent and dark and nihilistic things "edgy" not as a sarcastic insult but as praise? It's that kind of edgy.
The violence isn't just there for shock value it has a cathartic, purifying value. The thing is that it's more of a grandiose misanthropic revenge fantasy against all of humanity, than it is a gorefest, so if you like people you probably won't find it enjoyable, but if you share the author's perspective it's really a great experience.
>>143468895
Currently re-watching.
>>143478147
I don't really need to share a creator's mindset to find something honestly executed entertaining. It's just that from what I've seen the way the weird violent shit is executed is genuinely really stylish in a way that MD Geist can't even approach which is why I'm surprised it's the same director. The designs, the colors, the storyboarding, it's all as pleasant as such fucked up subject matter could get.

>>143484271
I didn't like Metropolis when I saw it but back then I was a dumb 14 year old who had just seen Mind Game and FLCL and wanted every OVA or movie to be equally as good.
His X movie gets a TON of hate but it seems pretty cool for what it is, namely a bunch of cool scenes from a much larger story but delivered very well with good animation and direction. It appears to be the same kind of experience as Akira or the Jojo OVAs, i.e. not some amazing narrative but fun to watch.
Generally from what I've seen people's favorite Rintaro thing tends to be the Galaxy Express movie.

I've watched it twice. Visually, it's phenomenal. The effects, character designs and animation are beautiful, and the dark, moody atmosphere really accentuates the tone and premise of the movie. Writing-wise, it's shit (but it's not like the manga is much better); the plot is just a flimsy, thin excuse to have a bunch of sick fight sequences. If you keep in mind that it bears almost no resemblance to the manga outside of the setting, premise, and characters, you should enjoy yourself. Just don't expect anything other than great visuals.

Final Fantasy Unlimited was great.
Just not as an adult, it was the perfect babies first anime.
Had some suspense, had a lot of oddity, but mainly it was classic action bad guy shows up and gets his butt kicked.
Also Oscha the clown was pretty well written.

I've been a fan of Kenichi Sonoda ever since I was a kid learning how to draw. There was just something about his ability to draw that drew me in, and I only branched out from him.
The thread's up for those of you who would like to request and for you artists, including myself, to pick up requests for. I hope it turns out great for everyone!

Surprised no one mentioned this one.

I'm currently watching Mobile Suit Gundam, which is pretty good.
Also watched Dirty Pair a few years ago, both the TV series and the OVA. Good stuff, might rewatch it again some time soon.

Thank god his art style is lost in adaptation, because it looks awful. Leiji is the laziest artist from that era. Reading his stuff is always a bore. His art has no sense of dynamism. He's always trying to find shortcuts in order to draw the least amount of stuff as possible. It's pretty much a collection of close-ups, talking heads, splash pages to show one single ship in space, and eyes, lots of lots of eyes close-ups and blank spaces.
>>143491648
His attempts at action are laughable. Look at this scene, stuff like this might be accepted in short budget animation, but it's inexcusable in a manga work like this.
>>143491702
And he will use the same lazy technique to avoid drawing proper panels as many times as he needs. On top of that, Matsumoto is notorious for giving up on his manga titles as soon as someone decide to adapt them into animation. He acts like "Someone else is doing it, so why bother?". And that's why 90% of his "serious" not gag stuff have no ending. Harlock, Emeraldas, Danguard Ace, Yamato, all of them have non-endings. He literally says he was too busy working in the animated adaptations to keep with the manga, when he barely was doing anything other than providing character designs to be improved by more talented people like Kazuo Komatsubara.
>>143491702
Personally, my biggest complaint against Leiji is the never ending sameface which is so prevalent that almost all of his women look like clones and there are like four different kinds of male characters that never stray from the mold. Each and every single fucking series of his. It drives me nuts.
Theres art style and then theres not knowing how to draw more than 6 characters. Its kind of pathetic.
>>143491814
I've been staring at that second panel for about two minutes now and I can't figure out what that blob standing behind the bar is supposed to be. Logically it should be a human, right? But I cant make out any human features. What the fuck am I looking at?
>>143491984
I know as much as you. Leiji's reputation as a manga legend is a joke. If you really take your time to read his stuff, you will see it's very hard to take anything he writes seriously. And the guy has a huge ego on top of that. His raise to fame was a gag manga called Otoko Oidon and it's pretty much a auto-biographical manga about how much of a pathetic human being he was. But when he got famous, he made a new self-insert in Tochiro, which is pretty much perfect in every way except for being a ugly dwarf. But he's a genius and all girls want his dick (I'm not making this up, it's actually what he puts in his manga. Tochiro is not only a Harlock characters, he appears in a bunch of other stories as well, including adult ones.).
That said, here's some other samples of what your typical Lazy Matsumoto manga looks like (sorry for the poor quality.)

>>143492288
No, he's not awful at everything. His spaceships looks alright. But can you really imagine yourself being entertained by looking at these heads and close-ups talking to each other for more than 200 pages? Because that's all you get from Leiji. He copies the same shit in a lot of panels. He often avoids drawing full human bodies because he's either lazy, or terribly incompetent at it.
I want to impregnate Vision while she sings on stage.

He fits into the classic esper super hero who is practically unstoppable. What he did when the bad guys tried to get away from him by going FTL in their space ship and he was stranded in space was amazing.
You RARELY get this archetype nowadays, Mondaiji had the archetype but many people on /a/ called him a gary stu without realizing his roots. (His entire design was spot on to the vintage esper look too).

Recently finished Giant Gorg. Its OP/ED got me rock-hard and over the course of it, I became strangely attached to Lady Lynx's lackey, Davy. Seeing him survive to the end made me really happy.

this has been in my backlog for far too long

I know it's not that old but I watched Gun X Sword recently and I really liked it. The first few episodes (especially the first 2) were mediocre but it get a lot better around episode 8 and then it kept getting better and better with each episodes.I liked how the bad guy was old and not some pretty boy, and I'm glad Van actually killed him without a second though, I don't watch revanche story to get some bullshit understanding ending. I almost laughed when they just killed the brother, he's a central character but just die in the background with nobody paying attention to him.
My only problem with the anime is the leader having so many followers despite being insane. I know it's anime but it's so unbelievable that so many people would trust that crazy old guy.

Your criticism of his use of talking heads, those lazy fist frames and excessive zoom-ins makes sense but I like his inking and the weirdness of his art and that page is a very good example.
He suffers from sameface but a TON of artists do. Shinji, Asuka & Rei have the same facial structure and no one complains about it but it's a meme opinion to whine about Leiji sameface.
He's not Tezuka or Ishinomori or Nagai but I think there's way more appeal to the weird way he draws humans than someone like Yokoyama.
>>143509950
Leiji also draws the best pin-ups out of all the cartoony post-Tezuka artists from what I've seen
>>143510016
He's not a genius at manga composition but to say he's the worst artist from that generation is just silly.

>>143509950
Theres a difference between the kind of sameface you mentioned and the sameface Leiji is guilty of. Rei, Asuka and Shinji are discernible from one another because of details in their character design that don't have anything to do with the composition of their faces. Leiji on the other hand draws the exact same woman, over and over again, with the only difference being that some times she's wearing a hat or a trinket in her hair and, if she's lucky, her hair will be a color other than blonde. Sometimes she has a short hair cut too but its styled exactly the same as it would be if she still had the ankle length hair.

>Rei, Asuka and Shinji are discernible from one another because of details in their character design that don't have anything to do with the composition of their faces
Yeah, colors and hair length and that's about it. Shinji's body is different cuz he's a boy but Asuka & Rei have the same anatomy.
I get that it can be hard to read in a manga where there's no color but I also don't think he's the legendarily horrible artists you guys say he is. Once again I don't think he's as good as Nagai, Ishinomori & Tezuka but he's miles above Yokoyama at drawing humans (I say this because I still really like Yokoyama's robots and some of his imagery like the cloaked figures is cool) and some of the comments like "UGH BLOBBY BODIES WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE" is dumb and makes me suspect you guys don't read a lot of old manga and are reacting the same way as the people who think Gundam 0079 is particularly badly animated by 70s anime standards. For the record no it's not; it's not particularly good but it's competent and some of the gifs people post as an example of how "terrible" it is are actually from good scenes. A lot of the "QUALITY" Gundam caps are also from moments with a lot of motion and the difference behind 0079 and the later Gundams is that the Gundams themselves were drawn more like super robots (i.e. more human-like and less mechanical). It was after all the first "real robot" type show and the style was not extremely well defined.
>>143510886
Oh and the character designs in 0079 are also great. A lot more facial and body variety than most "beautiful" modern anime.
>>143510987
Basically a common problem is that people are not used to 70s aesthetics and freak out over them.
>>143511038
If you cap this scene the Gundam is not gonna look as solid and mechanical as the gundams from the later shows but it was not even drawn with that standard in mind.
The obsession with robots being mechanical and extremely consistent from panel to panel was developed later; there was no such thing as "mechanical animators" in the 70s. As for manga Shotaro Ishinomori for example drew extremely solidly and was a classically trained artist but his robots could weirdly change design elements from panel to panel.
>>143511122
If you want to see legit QUALITY in a 70s Tomino show look at the great majority of Zambot 3 outside of the Kanada episodes.

>as well as "superpower dude stops bullets mid-air" from Angel Cop.

>>143511473

>>143511823
I watched Angel Cop for the anime, not the mention of jews.
It's no wonder you can go back and watch the classics again and again. Great storytelling, for bad or worse, made the anime, and if they introduced ethnicity, it was subtle and only aided in the story, but it wasn't the main focus.
The same could be said for Rally Vincent from Gunsmith Cats (who has brown skin) and she deals/ is an expert with guns. But she's not thought of that way, she's an amazing character— ethnicity be damned.
>>143510612
Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize that sisters that aren't twins were supposed to look identical. My mistake.

And for the record, this has Ozamu Tezuka influence drawn all over it. All the great masters influenced each other back then, and were selfless about supporting each other through said influence in their work.

Shirow's work included. Look up who he was influenced by and you'll see that notion of sameface disappears.

This work is amazing for its time. We can't fap to it today, but I imagine kids back then went to town when they were first introduced to this.

I think it's very good by any standard. It's not all that sexy so in that regard it hasn't aged too well but it's just well-stylized and appealing cartoony art in every other regard.

Tezuka was actually a huge dick to Ishinomori because he was jealous over Fantasy World Jun's success (and I guess he did find it kinda pretentiosu which I can understand, but I still like it); he later apologized though when Ishinomori took it to heart.
Honestly I LOVE Tezuka but I think Ishinomori was better at switching art styles. Tezuka had one style that was revolutionary and really good and obviously hugely influenced Ishinomori but the latter was very versatile and would often switch styles in the same series based on the atmosphere of the scene.

Compare that action scene to this one which is far more cartoony and Tezuka-like. Same series, just varying degrees of seriousness and grittiness.

Just look at how many styles the guy could use
