What I did on Realkana was start from the beginning あいえうお. Get 100 correct, add the next column, 100 correct....

Keep doing this, but after you have like 4/5 columns selected, start unselecting the first stuff you did so that the newer kana shows up more.

Realkana is shit now and I haven't used it since, but I think you should still be able to do this.

It took me 3 months of regular/average grammar studying with prior kana knowledge to go from "I don't understand shit" to "I can finally understand pretty much anything with a dictionary/OCR and enough time".

Either I'm really smart (very unlikely) or these guys are really dumb, unmotivated and/or lazy.

Guys how can I help with memorisation of the Core2K deck?

I don't wanna learn each kanji by itself but instead want to just learn vocab (and grammar) so I can start reading faster but I'm having a hard time remembering the vocab from the Core2K deck.

>"I can finally understand pretty much anything with a dictionary/OCR and enough time".

That's not really understanding. And I doubt it's even true. Maybe if you're talking about simplistic stuff. But overall Japanese has too much stuff that only becomes easy to understand as you get exposure and experience with the language.

Note that I'm not defending that fag on Reddit.

Depends on your time restraints? If your work/study means you don't have much time, you might be better off lowering the number of cards so you can also get time in for other stuff like grammar etc. Otherwise just grind through it.

Most important thing is to do your reviews every single day, if you're having problems it's fine to lower new cards but stopping reviews = failure.

For me personally, I used Twitter a lot to learn Katakana and Hiragana since I just constantly got notifications in those two since I followed a lot of Japanese accounts and studios.

So I'm just constantly reading them and eventually I was able to memorise it.
>>
>>143401546
It doesn't have much actually, maybe grasping some term usages/nuances is what might be hardest, but the general grammar ruling is really simple.

It might be the mentality you take on how you learn a language too, but if you know the "rules" (and you can read), theoretically you can understand anything.

>>143401610
I dunno, I never gave VNs a try... I did translate some mangos (about 30ish chapters) to force my understanding and to get publicly bashed, but it didn't happen.

I did lots of mistakes, and finding them was the hardest part.

I'm reading LNs now and there's just so much more text, but aside from some new expressions I can't make sense at first, it's still understandable.

I'm looking for a guinea pig to study in a way I propose just to see how good it is, I got a couple of friends already but they're damn too slow getting past the kanas...

>>
>>143403444
Not sure what the actual issue is then, does it look like that in other applications? (Also, refer to the Anki manual for the answer to your initial question)
>>
>>143403534

いいえ, everything else looks fine.
>>
>>143403292
Anki is a memorization application.

It has decks: which has a bunch of cards, each card is something you will force into your memory.

It'll give you a word/letter/sentence, and you'll think for yourself what it is.
You probably won't know if it's the first time, you'll click "show answer" and it'll show you.

Then you select one of the options based on how you fare your knowledge of that card:
Again, Hard, Good, Easy

Anki will manage when it'll show that card again for you based on your answers. You can see above the buttons when it will show next as your "daily exercise".
The more and more you get it "right", that is, you click anything that's not "Again", it'll show even less and less since you supposedly know that already.

Whew, that said, that Anki seems broken or badly configured, like other anons said, the font, and with that I can't help.

I'd recommend AnkiDroid (or it's iOS version) though, you can bring it anywhere since the point is doing the exercise everyday, without fail, until your brain gets hammered with the information.

It's also good for doing it while shiting or in the bed before sleeping.
>>
>>143403671

Thanks. I guess I expected it to do more. I'll probably just get AnkiDroid instead of messing with fixing this.

It's from the grammar of classical Japanese, I'm not sure that explanation will help.

The verb 「する」 was originally 「す」 in classical Japanese. 「せん」 is 「す」 conjugated into the 未然形 「せ」, with the auxiliary intentional or speculative verb 「む」 appended to the end and then shortened to 「ん」. This makes it the equivalent of しよう in modern Japanese, roughly.

This is also the same 「せ」 that the form 「せず」 is derived from, which is still used in modern Japanese.

Japanese kids are taught each kanji separately, right? In that case, how do they learn what kanji goes with what word?
>>
>>143411100
They aren't, they're taught them through vocabulary.
Most kanji workbooks give you all the common readings of a kanji and then 3~5 words it's used in together with it.

Whats the least offensive word you can translate 野郎 to? Not actually translating anything, but it's a topic I've wondered about on a couple of occasions. I guess it would probably be 'punk' or 'bastard', but it doesn't do the 'severity' of the word any justice. Or would it depend on context, so when a polite character suddenly uses it(think snake in SS) the translator should use an equally jarring word like 'motherfucker'?

Then again what if it's a word that the character likes to throw around a lot? That would reduce the seriousness a lot, I would think, so you would want to use a less vulgar word. But if people both in real life and the internet jokingly call each other fags and cunts constantly the 'severity' of the word is lost too, isn't it?

>>
>>143411234
the problem is there's just no equivalent in english

there's no word with quite the same intensity as 野郎 that isn't also considered a 'swear' word
and swear words are essentially taboo in many places where 野郎 could be used super freely

same thing with クソ
what do you do when a kids anime character yells クソ at the top of his lungs after stepping on a nail or something
you'd have to replace it with a euphemism in english, but that takes something away because it's not a really a euphemism in japanese

The problem with the trial version is you can only process 100 pages total and you can only save 3 pages per session.

In other words, the trial is nearly useless, except for verify that the OCR works somewhat wcorrectly.

that's on the line, more severe than 野郎 in a lot of cases
definitely couldn't take a little girl in grade school calling everybody a バカ野郎 and replace any part of it with "bastard"

I wouldn't actually mind swear words being used more liberally in translations. I remember watching OPM last year and I felt kinda disappointed when the baseball dude calling the gay prison dude おかま was translated to 'pretty boy' or something mild like that instead of 'fag'. I'm 99% sure licensed translators have some sort of restriction on swear words, of course.

As for kuso, I think "OWWWWWW" or "ARGH" would work if translating for a family-friendly audience. Basically any english word/phrase that conveys the feeling of a mixture of pain and surprise would work.

Speaking of クソ, that's another hard word to translate. Translating クソ寒い冬休み to 'Fucking cold winter break" every single time the character says it is going to feel overboard very quickly. Yet something like "unbearably cold winter break" seems way too mild. A moderate translation would probably be "godforsakenly freezing winter break" but that sounds slightly awkward.
>>
>>143411875
But little girls in grade school don't call everybody バカ野郎.

I guess if it were something she said often, I would use "dumbass" or "idiot"

But if she said it in an outburst of rage I would translate it to "dumb shit" or "retard" or maybe even "shit for brains" (笑)
>>
>>143385599
Since you know (most of) the kanji already a lot of vocab is going to be pretty easy to learn. If you want to go fast, you can even do 70-80 words per day in core. Grammar is something you want to pick up from reading.

>what would you suggest are good to read?

http://nocozazal.co.nf/readinglist.html

There is a surprisingly large number of shared words between chinese and japanese, especially for business related and technical terms. I think the PR of China even adapted 共和国 and some related words into mandarin. Don't quote me on that though, it's something my friend told me.

> my friend has a japanese LN of monogatari and i have followed the anime.

I don't suggest reading monogatari right from the start. I actually did that a few months ago and despite being able to comprehend most of Nisio's writing quite well, I couldn't really enjoy it because the dialogue is somewhat parodical or referential. I don't really know how to put it into words, but it's something that I feel you would enjoy more after reading linear stories that are less 'meta'.

Not just from LNs since there's a listening section, and the vocabulary they use is probably going to differ from what's common in LNs.

I'm running TA, but it just doesn't work right. It'll often skip over text and I have to re-copy it from the hooker to get it to display, like the system is lagging behind too much to capture in real time.

Is there an alternative that isn't bloated garbage? I don't need an AIO solution, I just need something that can take the text I'm already capturing fine and give me a nice Mecab-esque display with furigana.

The JLPT focuses on business related vocabulary, so TV shows would be better than LNs, news/news related programs would be even better than that.
If you reach a certain level of proficiency it will be a lot easier to learn new vocab though, since you know the grammar. So you can probably read LNs till you get comfortable with the language.

-Run on sentences

-Variety of vocabulary used: A good writer can express "he was sad" or "he ran" in 30 different ways, a bad writer will just reuse a few set phrases

-Grammar used: Better writers use more obscure grammar structures to get the exact nuance and meaning they're gunning for. Not to say that some don't come off as pretentious

-Setting: Sci-fi and fantasy will obviously have long, descriptive paragraphs to depict the systems and structure of the world the author has thought up. Half the appeal of these genres are in that after all

-Dialogue: The more dialogue, the easier it is (most of the time at least)

”for the ideas it expresses” means that what gets communicated is essentially the same, even though the skilled writer's text is simpler or shorter

>you equated "simpler structure" to "less information" yourself, i didn't even mention structure until then
more expression (e.g. ideas) in the same effort expended while reading is clearly a good thing. length and structure are just two particular variables tied to reading effort.

>so what you said was, "better writing has less information for the better ideas it expresses"

good writers don't magically embed ages of information into a few sentences. they just do better than worse writers.

people usually fall into a trap of thinking advanced = good but even a shitty writer can use advanced techniques and words if they're literate, just look at umineko's filler
