I never wasted my time with it, but... is it as bad as everyone makes it out to be?
It's good up to the Soul Society saga.
There's really no reason to watch it.
Bleach is like America. It started out all right, but got really shitty once the Mexicans invaded.
It is just fucking awful. The fights are painfully slow and drawn out because of the fucking exposition sickness the Japs seem to crave and nobody but the main character matters in the slightest.
It's fine, just avoid the filler at all costs. With a filler guide, I feel like it's worth watching.

Made it about halfway through main arc 2 fueled on nostalgia before I realized it was shit, stopped watching it for a while, picked up a different shounen, realized how shit Bleach was, and dropped it completely

Everyone was saying "Oh Bleach started nice then went to shit after Soul Society" but I decided to watch anyways this year.
First arc is awesome. Both girls are Best Girls, Chad is nice, the setting is awesome, the soundtrack is cool.
Then Soul Society comes up and it introduces a shit ton of uninteresting characters, all the fights are "no! i have yet another powerup!", the heaven-like Soul Society turns out to be shit, but it's still fun.
I haven't been able to keep up because the series apparently ramps up the bad things of Soul Society and completely abandons the good things it originally had.
Whoever decided to give that white-haired shota and the raging lesbian their own flashbacks episodes should be fired.

This might be one of the reasons why Kubo sticks to those 3 captains (Shota, Kenpachi, Byakuya), other than popularity, of course. Their powers are relatively easy to get an understanding of while their Bankais are just an expansion on the abilities displayed in their Zanpaktou's Shikai form, rather than a completely new thing.

It really isn't, it's a massive culmination of all of Kubo's worst writing habits with no "downtime" of decent content in between. It's fun. Kinda all over the place but it's pretty much always entertaining. Starts as ghostbusting which is fun, goes to Soul Society which is pretty great, then it gets a bit questionable but Aizen's Wild Ride is enjoyable enough. Then current arc has tons of shit go down.
Probably better to read the manga which while slow-paced can be binge read extremely fast, as compared to the anime which is super slow and gets pretty excruciating even if you skip all the filler.
I hadn't even thought of Bleach and the first thing I thought was if they revealed Urahara's bankai. It looks neat. Maybe I'll bother re-reading.

I think you got it reversed when it comes to the main character meaning more than the rest of the characters. Up til recently we hadn't really seen Ichigo do anything of relevance in this arc. Everyone else got their 15 mins fighting various Sternritter.

It's good. It got compared to One Piece and Naruto, though, which it's nothing like, so fans of those series started trying to convince people who liked it that it sucked. Its pacing seems slow compared to other fantasy action/adventure manga because the visual style is sparse and dramatic like classical Japanese art as opposed to tons of shit being crammed into twenty panels on every page like western comics.

I know I'm going to sound like a total retard, but I don't really get how the Quincies are represented in this arc. Before they were portrayed as average Humans in the real world with supernatural powers, but here they're shown to be alive for hundreds of years in another dimension, and can take quite a beating from Shinigami and their abilities. I'm assuming there are cases like As Nodt where Yhwach shows up and instills the Quincy powers in him, but I wish they were explained better.

I can see Kubo dealing with Ywhach pretty much the same way the Kishin was dealt with in the Soul Eater manga; by sealing him away. Urahara, Isshin and Ryuken will probably show up with some new info on how to seal Ywach in another dimension or whatever, and then Ichigo and friends will have one last hurrah sealing him. From the looks of things the Almighty combined with the SK looks to be an absolute power, probably the first and last in Bleach.
