By the way, I mistranslated earlier. Yoshida speaks of battle rather than war, and in context I think it's clear she's talking about excitement rather than realism or darkness. The "ban from above" very explicitly says war, though, and no further explanation is given in the interview.
It is, however, mentioned right next to the change in ship class names, so I think they're related. The Japanese word for "destroyer" very literally means "extermination ship" and they replaced it with a word modelled after "cruiser" which simply refers to sailing. I suppose the same hand forced both changes.

I don't know what point you're trying to make about cruisers, though. The word they made up for destroyers in haifuri is 航洋艦 - as you can see, it's made in imitation of 巡洋艦, and doesn't allude to anything remotely violent, but simply to sailing.

Instead of a direct hit to the fire control tower, have it be a near-miss that gives them some cuts and bruises but nothing serious or gross. Instead of fucking ramming a naval mine and being fine, have a limited chain reaction blow one up near to them and throw them into the water. Have the depth charge blow up near the submarine instead of literally touching the fucking sail.
It's fine if you don't want to kill off your characters but don't EXPLICITLY SHOW THE AUDIENCE THAT IT'S IMPOSSIBLE WHILE THE CHARACTERS STILL THINK IT IS.

Next time you rewatch take off the angry googles - it explodes at some 10 meters of the sail, which is outside the "massive hole that sinks the boat" range but well into the "certain to cause enough damage to force an emergency surface" range. They have a rater good military advisor who's rather anal about that kind of stuff.
Agreeing with you about the baloons thing. Was't wll done. It would have worked if they had mentioned it first like GuP's (in)famous carbon coating - which works because it's mentioned BEFORE we see it in action. Haifuri's airbags look more of a deus ex machina than a plot device.

I was thinking how they could have made the mine scene way more tense, just showing them slowly navigating through them all, having some close calls and ultimately they could have gotten through safely but it still would have been more interesting than just having the explosion.

I liked how the ships with full crews had good accuracy while the Musashi (zombie crew didn't have the bridge, so the turrets were firing under uncoordinated local control) had shit accuracy. It MADE SENSE, and allowed for the last battle (imagine what the 18 inchers would have done of any other ship with a direct hit, instead of only causing damage for teh near misses)

You can´t mission kill a battleship with any reasonabe airburst nuclear weapon. You could kill the crew but being under hamster mind control they would be "dead schoolgirls sailing" They could still wreck Tokyo before dying.
The bigger question is how did the Musahi make it to the port? It was hit by at least 8 long lance torpedoes and 10+ lighter torpedoes from other blue mermaid ships.
It should be immobile and taking a shitload of water Yamato took 8 lighter air launched torpedoes and was terminally listing to starboard before sinking. Musashi seems to be seaworthy when arriving in Yokosuka. While Japanese damage control was considered a shamefull, 40 schoolgirls can´t possibly repair what 3000 IJN sailors could not.
