About a month in, ~130 mature cards in. I've been taking it slow to improve retention, I was at 5 new cards a day a few weeks ago, barely got up to 15 yesterday. Maybe in a couple of weeks I'll be back up to 20 again, but right now I want to get my retention to 80% (70% right now).
>>143271106
Yeah I watched re: zero too
>>143271081
Is it just ナンバー?
I get the feeling it's just ナンバー.
>>143271204
Nah, most people call it シャープ.
Official name is 井桁
>>143271143
I had the same problem when I started. You will realize after some time that your progress is super slow. I tried after some time to increase my new cards and you get used to it pretty fast. Retention will go down but on the long run you will get a higher retention. Try 40 new cards and increase the intervalls. Otherwise you will learn forever
>>143271297
well, in the context of something like #0624
i'm thinking you would read it ナンバー ゼロ ろく に よん
>>143270825
シャープ or 井桁
>switch IME to japanese
>shift 3
>press space to get to kanji henkan menu
>IME tells you pronunciations
>type きごう
>look through the massive list for the symbol you are interested in
>ime tells you how it is pronounced
although it may give slightly less common names for some things, like アステリスク for * when people might just call it こめ
You can also literally just type # 井桁
>>143271321
I just feel that would lead to burnout. I don't mind learning forever, I'm still learning new English even if I've known it since I was a toddler.
>>143271106
面白い..finally something interesting to practice with, thanks
>>143271415
what about the one on a phone
what's that one called
>>143271106
>>143271147
Not really the most original story
>>143271379
Why would it be ナンバー anyway I would read that as "pound" in english
>>143271321
>increase the intervalls
SERIOUSLY DON'T DO THIS SHIT
I increased my intervals back when I started out and it fucked me over in a long run. Don't fucking rush cards to maturity.
>>143271379
In that context Japanese would read it as シャープ or シャープボタン when speaking about phone number.
>>143271437
Do you actually think Japanese people give a shit about the difference between ## and bother to distinguish them?
>>143271379
Yes it'd probably be number.
>>143271457
So if you get first place in a race, i.e. #1, you're "pound one"? No wonder you ended up leaving the EU.
>>143271416
You will probably be frustrated that you can't read nor speak after 3 months of learning and then stop like most beginners. Even if you would burn out you could still decrease your new cards. You should just try more at the beginning to see how it works out. At the beginning everything about the language is new but if you just jump in then you can probably draw some connections
>>143271479
>Don't fucking rush cards to maturity.
Oh sorry I meant steps not intervalls
Thanks for pointing it out
>>143271435
>boring ass 昔話 anybody who watched more than 3 anime shows knows already

>>143271435
This story was bland as fuck. Read momotarou instead, at least that story has some monkey rape in it
>>143271484
those are literally the same and that's not what I'm asking
in english the phone button is always called pound but can be read as "number" in a context like lucky dragon #5
anyway i saw it in the context of some phone buttons so it's probably シャープ
>>143271565
>The hell do you usually practice with?
boring daily life passages. never practiced reading anything mystical in japanese yet
>>143271536
On the other hand, I've been picking out words already. I'm actually a month in a half, and I'm not really in it to stop now. Especially when this is something I've been putting off for 4 years now. I'll take it slow, it's really not that bad.
>>143271638
>those are literally the same and that's not what I'm asking

it's a similar system with putting wa/ga/de/mo/etc in the middle, etc
however the Korean ~ga is ~de in Japanese so it's confusing as fuck when you use it
>>143273817
i heard that about the letters too
in korean apparently the little components determine all of the sounds but in japanese haha no one gives a fuck に and こ are completely different

Are there any LNs for adults? Like, not teenie bopper drama... but actual storytelling?
Or do you just have to go straight up novels for good reading?
When ever I try translating, I usually end up trying to use direct translations which is a problem.
Maybe I need to study grammar more, but how do you usually do it?
>>143275705
>not liking teenie bopper drama
>>143275705
Read Monogatari
>>143275721
why are you translating in the first place?
you usually do it by determining the best way to carry over the meaning and nuance of a sentence in english and then writing that down
requires more english skill than japanese really
>>143275705
>LN for adults
>LN literally means targeted towards teenagers
That's the same as asking for shonen targeted towards adults.
Try Hakomari though, it's genuinely well-written if my opinions are worth a damn.
>>143275957
This is what I figured, honestly.
And I will try it, thanks anon.
>>143276074
Oh and also, if you want to read Hakomari, the first volume might bore you a bit. It really reads like your typical generic fiction at first, but I feel it picks up later on. The first volume still manages to keep you interested in the end though, so I don't think you'll hate it.
