Math was the hardest exam I have ever seen, and I've even been in olympiads.
My scores were:

English: 90
Jap: 140
I am from 南米 by the way.

It's just not your usual exam, first part is really weird. The second part is REALLY hard, the first problem (two are worth 25 points each) involves calculus. Easy calculus though, the second one involves calculus at the university level. Third year engineering students here do those type of problems.

You fell for the meme, son.
Yotsuba is completely useless as beginner material because of the high amount of slang and deliberately misspelled shit.
>>
>>143183491
>Because dictionaries are useless for deciphering them.
That would be because Yotsuba constantly fucks them up. If you followed the guide and picked up the reading pack it'd tell you what she most likely tried to say.

>this again
Yotsubato is a great manga for beginners. Even if it has a lot of slang and deliberate misspellings, the regular conversations of the other characters are still grammatically correct and for the most part easy to follow.
Hell even without the reading pack half the slang that occurs is either slurring of ない to ねぇ and すごい to すげぇ, doesn't take long to figure out.
>>
ケサランパサラン
>>
>>143183711
I've been having that feeling since I picked it up, honestly. The dialogue itself is usually very simple, but the slang and deliberately incorrect phrases and so on can make it challenging sometimes.

>>143183739
>If you followed the guide and picked up the reading pack it'd tell you what she most likely tried to say.
I downloaded the reading pack but it seems next to useless. The "sentence list" doesn't actually cover most of the sentences and the vocab deck seems to be missing a lot of the vocab too.

I've just been using the Yen Press scans when I get stuck, but they don't really help in a lot of the above cases because things like Yotsuba mispronouncing words can't be translated literally. At best it lets me see that the sentence seems like nonsense because it actually is nonsense, but it doesn't give me any idea as to what the correct sentence was supposed to be.

well the page you posted is extremely straightforward

the only thing she messes up is おもてなし which is a pretty simple word, and the rest you can google easy

i don't remember whether it was before or after, but at some point she fucks something up like おまかいですが, maybe you'd have to look that up, but you should pretty easily be able to scroll through the japanese explanations and find the part where they explain what she meant

For people using U (sticky mode) to mine secondary readings with Rikaisama: What actually happens when you hover over the kana reading is that the top entry for that kana is mined. For example, if you hover over 巾 with sticky mode and push R on the きん reading, it will actually mine 斤. So make sure to double check.

How hard is it get into a top tier university over there? Less competition than the universities in US and UK?

>Why are you studying Japanese?
I wanted to learn Japanese ever since I first played Tekken 4, solely on the basis that my 10 year old self thought it sounded really cool.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nruEPZqFpjY

A few years later I discovered anime via Rurouni Kenshin, and my desire to learn the language grew from there.

>What is your goal in studying?
To enjoy Japanese media.

>What is your current level with regard to jlpt or other measurements?
I only just started reading recently, so beginner level.

>Whats your goal for proficiency? (N2, N1, only basics, etc)
I'm not worried about speaking, but I want to be able to understand pretty much anything I read or hear without needing a dictionary or grammar reference on hand.

>What are your studying methods?
Learned kana through writing and Real Kana. Read through Tae Kim but often struggled to understand his explanations, so I looked up whatever grammar he was talking about in the DOJG and 9 times out of 10 that cleared it up for me straight away. Did Core2K/6K for a bit but kept mixing words up because of not knowing kanji so I dropped it. Tried learning kanji through RTK but didn't like the method so now I'm just doing them the good old-fashioned way. As I make my way through the kanji, I'm also reading Yotsuba.

>How often do you study?
It was every day until recently, but my enjoyment of the learning process has severely diminished lately and I'm finding it hard to motivate myself. I'm getting increasingly frustrated and angry over making mistakes, which is only making things worse.

>Whats your goal for proficiency? (N2, N1, only basics, etc)
Native level
>What are your studying methods?
Anime and reading something every now and then
>How often do you study?
If anime counts, every day. Otherwise once a week at most
>>
>>143190047
>but my enjoyment of the learning process has severely diminished lately and I'm finding it hard to motivate myself.
that's because your methods aren't helping

you either learn kanji by context (core decks), or you use RTK or an RTK related method (Kodansha, KanjiDamage, et cetera)

if you are trying to learn kanji 1 by 1 with no mnemonics things won't go well and you will eventually get bored and quit
>>
>>143188540
Is there a way to mine if the meaning you want is not at the top?
>>
What is the normal review count at 20 new cards a day for Anki?

Is 250-300 unusually high?
>>
So why should we be skipping the Tae Kim exercises? Just unnecessary or what, because it seems like any practice is good.....
>>
>>143190875
You can use them if you want, but they're not necessary, and most anime watchers already have a subconscious understanding of the sections with exercises before they start reading TK.
>>
>>143190765
>Is 250-300 unusually high?
yup

at 20 anything over 200 means you have shit retention, do custom reviews
>>
>>143190765
Just do whatever you're comfortable with. If you mean the amount of cards you forget and get auto-scheduled every day (not the maximum reviews you allow), that depends on the size of your overall deck and retention. Depending on how you stack it you could easily have one day where there's 100 cards and the next only 50.
If you think your retention is low you might want to reduce the amount of reviews you allow per day. For me, I think 250 max is just about perfect since I can do most of the cards in 15-20 minutes on the commute to work.

Like >>143190998 said if you think your retention is low you might just want to use custom reviews a bit more to practice stuff you're struggling with. Personally I do about 30-40 vocab a day and I don't normally have much trouble remembering them the next day unless they have very odd readings.
>>
>>143190875
You get plenty of practice when you start reading and with sentences that actually sound native unlike half of the stuff in tae kim or anything you would write
>>

Also, I had a look at KanjiDamage and I hated that even more than RTK. Too low-brow and 'murika-centric.

Anyway, kanji is the thing I've actually been doing daily (even if it's just reviews most days). I find it harder to motivate myself to read because that frustrates me more. At least with kanji I can see I'm learning them, but with reading I don't feel like I'm actually improving at all and I just get mad at myself for not understanding things.

ive never even looked at kanjidamage, but ive seen it around so thought it was worthwhile enough to get a mention

ive been doing RTK myself, cureently 50 kanji a day.

if i continue with consistency it will be over by mid-august.

doing RTK is way too fucking easy once you get the hang of it, but whatever suits you i guess

I found it easy, but I just found making up mnemonics to be extremely tedious. Heisig's own are just stupid and the ones on koohii most of the time didn't appeal to me either so I had to think up my own and it just took way too much time. Even if rote is less efficient, at least it's quick to get out of the way each day.

Why are you studying Japanese?

The current western video game industry is trash, even the last E3 couldn't get me hyped anymore. I had more fun with my Japanese niche Vita and 3DS games than with any AAA game these past years thanks to games like Story of Seasons/Rune Factory, the Atelier series, Vanillaware games, the Etrian Odyssey series and so on. Many good Japanese games aren't localized, though, and those who are often receive bad localizations filled with censorship. I don't want to rely on those localizations anymore.
I'm also a huge yurifag and many series I like weren't translated fully (e.g. Comprehensive Tovarisch or whatever it's called in Japanese)

What is your goal in studying?

Even though English isn't my native language I like to think I speak it fairly well. My goal is to reach that same level with my Japanese.

What is your current level with regard to jlpt or other measurements?

I'm already past Core 2k but by just a little, far from finishing 6k. I've also learned Tae Kim's basic and essential grammar. Other than that standard stuff I've learned a bit of mahjong vocabulary.

What are your studying methods?
Anki and Tae Kim

How often do you study?

Every day

The files are stored locally on your computer in .arc files. The problem is making it so that it aligns properly and actually translating it all. There was a team who attempted it before me but they all gave up so all thats doing it now are Russians who literally run the thing through google translate and do it that way

You should absolutely be studying grammar already. You can leave vocab until after you're done with kanji if you want, since it should be really easy to go through core at that point. You'll of course have to at least shove some vocab into your short term memory to study grammar thorugh

L = lapsed
R = review
N = new

let's say I've done 70 reviews and lapsed on 9 cards

These are the next 10 cards I see if I continue:
RRRNLRRNRL
This is what I see if I put down the deck for 10 minutes:
LLLLLLLLLR

The latter makes lapsed cards easy to recall, whereas the former treats them equally. I get lapsed cards 100% if they're clustered together instead of my usual 85% retention.

I don't see a reason why I get something like a free pass on my forgotten cards just because I had to answer a phone
>>
>>143198109
>By learn I meant acquiring new vocab and kanji, not revision
By having a deck with many unknown words and kanji?
>>
>>143198258
The "free pass" you get is basically a red herring as Anki is designed for long term retention and within a few weeks those words will have started to naturally filter into strengths and weaknesses of your recall, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

You can also set to show new cards before reviews, after reviews and mixed during reviews. Look up how in the Anki manual.

To add to >>143198330, you can also configure the lapse re-learn time (10 mins by default) in the deck options. If re-learning cards is so easy for you then maybe you are better off removing the steps entirely (so failing a card immediately goes into tomorrow's pile without relearning it again on the current day).

Or maybe what you want to do is hide the review counts so that it doesn't "give away" which type of card you are currently on.

I didn't know you could do that. That's something to consider.

Calibre already does that, anon, and likely a lot better. That aside, reading manga on a kindle is pretty terrible compared to a cheaper tablet. They are great for text but not for images you want to be able to quickly pinch zoom in and out, swipe back and forward through pages quickly and on top of that, the colour is better even for black and white pages.

Absolute beginner here, just finished reading the guide. By you guys' experience, is the order of learning suggested by the guide the best approach? What I mean is, I understand that certain methods will click for some and won't for others, but is there a -wrong- way to go about this? For example, learning X before Y, or studing Z after W, etc. Mistakes that I may regret in the future or will add more time unnecessarily.

Any tips for a scrub, or mistakes/approaches you wish you made or didn't make?

I've been wanting to learn for a while but never set out to go ahead and try. I'm just tired of having to wait for either censored content, or dubbed content at the mercy of people who don't even really care. There's so many VN's I want to read, manga, anime, etc. And I realize I just have to stop being a lazy fuck and actually try to do it.

遠野物語 is pretty good light reading.

Why would you expose yourself to something slow and frustrating if you can do core for a couple of weeks and start reading with a much bigger vocabulary?

Anki is a lot more efficient as a learning tool, it takes 15 minutes to learn 20 new words daily and do the reviews daily, reading just can't compete with that. It's just that there aren't a lot of autists around who can do Anki 5 hours a day while reading is easy and enjoyable but it only works after you have some basics down.

Why would the hunter do anything like that to the monk? Just because he was scare and ate for the hunter's mochi?

This would be true if Japanese was just vocab knowledge. But it's not. You need grammar, you need expressions, you need context, you need to see the words used in actual Japanese texts and not just single example sentences, to actually gain understanding. Reading gives all of these.

I agree it's more efficient to do a vocab deck alongside reading than purely read, but just doing Anki without reading will not achieve anything.

Because that's proven to be ineffective and leads to burn out, reading when you're lacking in vocab just takes more time than usual, but is still beneficial if you have the patience

Cramming 100 new vocab into your head over the course of a few hours and ending up not remembering any of them as a result is not comparable to having to spend a few seconds looking up words more frequently than you'd like while reading

Even if it does take you longer than you want, you're still getting valuable exposure to native material, learning grammar, learning vocabulary and getting good practice in using a dictionary which is something you'd have to get used to doing anyway

Anyone see Steve's new video today?

He said spaced repetition systems are ineffective, and it warmed me up a little inside. I agree with Steve that reading lots of native material is the most efficient path to the mastery of a foreign language.
>>
>>143202076
No, reading is a waste of time if you have no vocabulary since you're just looking up words all the time, you should just do Anki until you have a full vocabulary before you start reading.
>>
>>143202076
You've been in this thread how long? Start your reps already.
>>
>>143201902
That's exactly what I was addressing though. Saying that dry humping Anki is bad because it's inefficient and leads to burn out while early reading is good but requires additional time and patience is kind of ironic.

>>143201965

Not everything has furigana in it.

>Even if it does take you longer than you want, you're still getting valuable exposure to native material, learning grammar, learning vocabulary and getting good practice in using a dictionary which is something you'd have to get used to doing anyway
Or I could just start doing the same thing a month later which is insignificant in the long run since you won't learn shit in that month.
>>
>>143202076
Yes, that's the most effective strategy in my opinion. While I'm pretty much a newbie in Japanese as well (I know only like 400 kanji), I have experience with studying other languages. Reading is super-important, however you need to have some foundations to build on. In other words, do Anki + vocab first and then gradually move onto reading.

>>
>>143202076
it boils down to:
beginners who can't read due to insufficient knowledge of grammar and/or basic vocabulary, like >>143201674
and thus project their personal failures onto everyone else, which results in a pointless argument about whether spaced vocab repetition or reading will teach you the language faster
it's a really misguided debate in the first place because you learn significantly different things from reading than you do from staring at a bunch of separate words translated into english

this should be common sense, but you absolutely have to read if you want to improve reading comprehension and reinforce your knowledge of vocabulary
anki is not a bad tool but in the end most of the words you learn will come from native material and not SRS
anki is most useful for something like kanji study, for beginners who would have no real way to expose themselves to that type of content and would benefit from a collective resource like that
anki's impact is often highly exaggerated

i dropped core because it was taking up a lot of time that i found did not actually amount to what i considered "learning"
while kanji was kind of tough for me so i kept going with it for maybe 7 months in total

after all that i concluded my reading ability was at the point where it was more helpful to just read and naturally encounter words+kanji that way rather than to grind anki
vocab is like 30% of reading comprehension and it fills up gradually anyway, maybe i'll start mining when i get to a higher level but for now that time can be spent more effectively

The first guy is false flagging. Do core and then a week in try reading Yotsubato or Hanahira and see if you can be arsed looking up all the words you won't know. If you can't, try again after another week and see if it's more bearable then. Different people have different tolerances to that shit.

the kanji definitely did help with learning those readings even if what you say about my brain is true
after doing all that kanji-gazing it took me the same amount of time to do a hundred cards of vocab than it did to do twenty before
my biggest problem with vocab was recognizing the kanji and it really bothered me so i took a detour and learned them

Not him, but it depends on the person.

In my case (gone through Core 6k), as someone who honestly doesn't have the best memory or focus, I regret not doing handwriting practice earlier. I don't feel like I'd ever be able to reach the level of consistent sureness that I want without it.

So a few months ago I had gotten about halfway through (1200 kanji) a RTK kanji deck on anki. I think it was working pretty well for me, and I learned a ton of new kanji from it. Unfortunately, once my schoolwork for last semester started piling up, I got out of the habit of doing it and now its been 3 months and I have 1000 reviews. What's the best way to deal with this situation? I've tried to catch up, but I do like 250 reviews and then the next day it will be back up to 900 or something. Is the best thing to do to just start the deck over? It would take a month to get back to where I was at the pace I was doing (40/day), but it would probably be a lot easier for me this time around as I still recognize a good portion of them. Or is the optimal thing to do to just try and power through the reviews? Sorry for the wall of text, I guess I just assume a lot of anons here have been in a similar situation at some point.

Everything I guess, making sense of what should be very basic stuff. I finished TK and got about 100 cards down in DOJG and still have problems fully comprehending sentences, especially when they're long. Short sentences are ok for the most part. Grammar has always been a problem for me, and I've always felt like I must be doing something wrong, but honestly I think the solution is just read read read, and also get in plenty of listening practice if you're not already since that helps immensely

Getting demotivated is your worst enemy though, feeling like you're doing it all wrong is completely natural, try not to worry about it, and just focus on reading and studying as much as you can, even when it all feels pointless, and before you know it you will have improved

If you had a partner dad wouldn't have to keep worrying about getting more kids so stop being a neet, get a girlfriend and continue our family's legacy, anon.
>>
>>143208934
You must be adding duplicate or obvious words.
>>
>>143210779
Oh yeah thanks a lot anon
ってなんでやねん!

If there was a partner ojisan too could make more of an effort to make children. (I'm assuming ojisan refers to the speaker himself.)

>遁げず
What kind of inflection is that?

And did the 狐 strangle him or he the 狐? And I don't get the whole "孫左衛門の神様よりは御利益ありと" phrase (among others). Is it one of those "The god answered his prayers, but ironically that's what got him killed?"

I thought that but I figured it would make more sense as よりも, I just don't know anymore

How much time do you guys put in per day or week?
>>
>>143211514
6-10 hours, sometimes more, but a lot of it is pretty casual

Most of my free time spent with Japanese shit, so if you count that as learning then probably around ~20 if I procrastinate hardcore and 35 if I don't.

自分が自分を否定せず、自分を他人が否定しない世界。
Does that mean the guy was rejected by the others despite not rejecting the world himself?
Is that sentence confusing or do I just suck at grammar?

Is there a way to make it combine decks or does it only ever work for one at a time?
>>
>>143212417
No. It means "a world where you're denied neither by yourself nor other people". Except the Japanese sentence doesn't use the passive form, of course.

Hi you're not supposed to answer questions when you're a beginner :)

You can make the grid for all subdecks in a deck as long as all the fields with kanji match the pattern specified in the settings. You can make subdecks by dragging a deck onto another deck. I modified the addon a bit to be able to specify multiple field names for >>143212549, not sure if I didn't break anything, but I can post it here if anyone wants it.

No offence meant! :) Just want to let you know that as a beginner, you're likely to have lots of misconceptions due to your inexperience with the language, so you should try not to spread these to others :D If you're unlucky, you'll draw a lot of flak from the meanies here too... :(
