I see it as an overreaction. It only seems depressing because we were not shown what happens next and people demonise most of the characters far from what they deserve. It is only depressing if you force yourself to believe that Machi actually got lobotomised by the village.
>>
>>143158927
Yoshio gives in to the temptation and rapes Machi, then gets brutally murdered by Natsu, and Hibiki commits suicide after finding out what happened. It came out of nowhere so we're still recovering from it.

I don't understand the problem. Black comedy is not for everyone for sure but this series has been pretty consistent in the dark humour. To see it end this way is enjoyable if you've been happy with the stuff before it, although a bit sad.

Sure, they exaggerated her suffering in the anime ending for the purpose of the comedy but we were used to it. Overall, depressing is one of the last things that would come to mind describing this show.

Yeah but her desire to go be a city girl is gone. Was that in the manga? Kinda takes some of the fun out of it if she isn't even trying.

The anime resumes the manga at Natsu trying to record Machi's confession (because Natsu's confession to the mountain god was at the beginning of the chapter, the convenience of this situation is what makes the chapter and resolution funny.) Instead of using this scenario for laughs, the anime played everything seriously for their finale while still using the happy-go-lucky ending. The point of the chapter was to retire Machi's city-driven antics gently so the story could move on, not come to a close.
>>
>>143159996

>The point of the chapter was to retire Machi's city-driven antics gently so the story could move on, not come to a close.

Shame. The antics is mainly what made the show funny for me.
>>
>>143159935
Yes you can be afraid of losing someone, I fucking watched the show you retard.

But holy shit how can anyone be ok with machi coping with her crippling social anxiety by deciding to act like a retard, ignore her problems and dreams and just stay with someone that encourages such a destructive behavior?

It's honestly a horrible thing to even imagine
>>

>>
>>143157500
If the anime doesn't boost manga sales? Probably for a very long time. I guarantee you either way he's going to be checking scripts if anything else he makes gets adapted.
>>
>>143160229
It was less a dream than it was a decision on a whim, given how Machi never really bothered trying to learn how to be less of a hick. She just decided "I want to go to school in the city!" one day without giving it much thought.
I'd say that realizing that staying in the mountains with Natsu was a better idea counted as character growth.
>>
>>143160163
She returns to technology and all that later, but it takes a break for a mini-arc and opens up more Kumade Village vs. Tamura Village conflict. The story going into this break is all that made it a useful stopping point for the anime.

Simple, by avoiding the projection that she will be forever retarded and that her dreams are limited to going to highschool in the city. She still has a brain despite being a hick and Natsu is a huge pushover as depicted so many times. If she decides to dream some more, Natsu will allow her but will impose a set of challenges like he has done since the beginning.
>>
>>143159624
>No. People are overreacting because she went back to her normal life

What's normal? Her dreams are shattered and she's still as much a nervous wreck as she ever was maybe worse and everyone is happy with that?
>>
>>143160580
Yes, as a father, you have to realize you can't let your kid into the dangerous world of the city until they're ready. It's much better that they stay in a safe space like the village.
>>
>>143160639
>Yes, as a father, you have to realize you can't let your kid into the dangerous world of the city until they're ready.

You also have to realize that your kids are going to grow up and that it's your job as parent to prepare them from the real world not shelter them from it.

Her social anxiety is not healthy and everyone should be trying to fix it. She's not gonna magically be ready one day. They have to fix her shit and they're not.
>>
>>143160714
>They have to fix her shit and they're not.
Assuming it can be "fixed".
>>
>>143160714
You literally described the situation of today's world. Parents don't wand to spend the time fixing it because it's hard and it's much easier to just expect them to magically be ready one day.
>>
>>143160817

I really just don't know how Im supposed to feel about this ending.

Honestly Im kind of pissed.

Like they could have easily had Machi overcome her issues, and feel ready to go to the city but then remember how much she loves her home town and wants to stay because of that and not because she's emotionally broken.
>>
>>143160714
That's the point. Since their village is isolated from the world, it's safe to assume that even after Natsu passes away, Machi won't ever have to worry about going to the city. It's fine for things to stay as they are.

When you see a cute anime girl suffering, it is natural to want to whiteknight her even for a comedy series. But you know what, it was in an anime that banked on her suffering all the way through to the end. It's unfortunate that it did not fit your personal opinion on what should have happened. The studio may have fucked up in the eyes of the blind fans and the author but the work is not an abomination. The ending worked and there is no objective reason why people need to pick up their naginatas and perform a war dance.

There is more to do in a city. There is also more you have to put up. Millennials love urban life, their parents preferred suburbs. It's all a matter of taste.

What people are going on about is really skewed at this point, and it's not unlike the confusion during any end-talk of the season. It's not autism, it's genre savviness.
Most anime have gotten people used to the old tsuyoku naritai cliché where MC always manages to overcome his/her problems in the end through the power of friendship/love/force of will/some random other bullshit.

So when a show that looks to be smooth sailing towards that kind of ending waits until 5 minutes before the end of last episode to say "yeah, fuck it, let's just give up and pretend the last 12 episodes never happened", it's understandable that people feel confused.

>>143163649
Yes and they hardly covered half of it. A major cause of the problematic anime original storyline is because this series was sponsored to promote the Sendai region (such as the train), so several events of the manga were rearranged so they could create a scenario by the end of the series that took place in Sendai. The part they chose to end it happened to be a good place (on paper) since the manga goes into a different arc for a bit. As it is, it did not mesh well at all with their Sendai storyline.

It was almost there. Start at the scene where Machi is back from Sendai and cries that they threw rocks at her, have Natsu show her the recording of people applauding and cheering, she realises she was wrong and that maybe it isn't so bad out there. Cue hopeful ending where she resolves to be more outgoing, Natsu admits he was being selfish and agrees to help her with getting ready to go to highschool in the city in the future (instead of just setting her up to fail and get mental breakdowns like he did before).

There. It's fixed. It isn't a great ending. It isn't very original, or very interesting. But at least it's better than telling viewers "you have crippling social anxiety ? fuck off and stay in your hole forever like the retarded piece of shit you are" and losing all your BD pre-orders.

One of the children was filmed numerous times performing sexual acts with high-ranking federal government officials, in a scheme set up by Cameron and other MKULTRA researchers, to blackmail the officials to ensure further funding for the experiments.[133]

That's not the only time the USA fucked up kids for science:

It wasn't telling the viewers that. You don't have to self-insert in Machi, do you get it? The message could have been better but if it wants to be a comedy that shows a failure for once, it is allowed to do that.

Who knew that an unassumingly cute show about a country bumpkin and her talking bear would have the ending which would make the most waves this season?

I doubt any ending this season will top the sheer amount of reception, good or bad, this finale has had.
>>
>>143164796
It's hilarious that this and Mayoiga were fucking opposites. Mayoiga, promoted as a horror/mystery, became an unintentional comedy with an unremarkable ending, while Kumamiko, expected by many as a cute SoL show, startled the viewers with a horrifying ending that sent Japan on fire.
>>
>>143163625
>Please explain the original problem
It's been said many times in the previous threads if you're genuinely curious, but I'll outline it again here differently.
The chapter the finale was adapted from into a two-part drama was just a simple chapter in the original, and the part that the writers blew out of proportion was nothing more than a few panels of Machi having a nightmare about city people. Meanwhile Natsu had his own nightmare about a happy city-Machi so he prays to mountain god, and his problem is miraculously solved the next morning as Machi decides not to go to the city anymore due to her nightmare. The entire brake on Machi's city pursuits is just played off through a short joke, and it adds a layer of security for Kumade Village to prime the cliffhanger at the end.
The anime cut this chapter up and, again, used a detail of the chapter to create their own storyline, deviating completely from the flow of the chapter while still using it. It goes on to play its own content seriously, and ultimately has Machi experience city trauma as reality as a reason to stop trying for the city, rather than the outcome of a gag situation. Yet, it still uses the gag ending, which lacks cohesion between the two different writing contexts (at this point they're just different stories). It's the sewing of two different fabrics, and the seams are weak. This goes on into things like its lack of faithfulness to the manga and overall bad writing decisions, which, as mentioned in the thread, were propagated by the requisite of writing Sendai in. Those who were invested faced a disappointment.

>and why it justifies people to flip their shit up.
As I mentioned in the post you replied to, many points of discussion now are talking/complaining about things that have evolved above the main issues. While there's easily reason to be disappointed with the turnout, there's a lot of overreaction and exaggeration that's equally being argued against into something else.

You're part of the problem.
>>
>>143164832
You're right, that issue is tiny as opposed to what is going on. But I still see merit in what they did with the deviation even if it creates dissonance with the original work. You may see it as a weak ending but it worked for me. Machi suffering in reality as opposed to a dream does not differ that much in entertainment value since she has been suffering in reality throughout the whole thing.

Morally it does have different connotations but still, Machi isn't in grave danger or permanently shocked. If you do believe that to be the case, then I'm afraid I only see it as an unfounded conjecture and can only see less reason to be upset. Yes, it could have worked better as a joke but as it stands, it works.

tl;dr. It's ok to be disappointed but some people, possibly a minority, do like the ending. Getting angry is stupid and if you are, please have some cold water rice.
>>
Personally, I hate the ending because of the idolshit. It's so fucking overused, it needs to die already.
>>
>>143165263
But the idol stuff in this episode was fairly innocent, to the point where barely any idol-like footage was shown on screen. Machi's ritual dance doesn't count because it's just a ritual dance.

>Machi suffering in reality as opposed to a dream does not differ that much in entertainment value since she has been suffering in reality throughout the whole thing.
While this can stand on its own, the problem isn't a matter of entertainment value. It's because it breaks the vibe of the original context, the context itself, and is an elephant in the room for any material past it. But yes, Machi isn't so fucked as some people may actually believe. It's just a hasty shift in tone due to the above, which has fostered incredible confusion.

I see where you're coming from in all this now, and the discourse has certainly reached polarization of shitting on yay or nay-sayers. This is where I'm sad to have to see another series' discussions go.

For the non-enlightened: She basically says she saw the final episode of the anime adaptation. While she was offered the ability to oversee the script for the anime, she declined and felt it was better to leave that to the pros as she has no experience at it. It's the final episode. Given that this is an arc that had been expanded for several episodes, how do you simply become unaware of all the changes made for several weeks? He/she knows about it beforehand and is now regretting it with all of the backlash. Out of everyone involved, he/she had the most to lose if it was ever known he/she had approved it.
>>
I liked this episode, if she overcame all her problems and everything was daijobu at the end just because it's the end that'd be some boring shit. Pretty jealous of machi living the good life though, she doesn't experience the anxiety with the town's people so it's all good.
>>
Honestly, the only way this can ever be redeemed is if the BD extras come with an epilogue that has Machi finding out about the actual events and it ends with her being penpals (because Machi can't into text messaging) with some of the other idols.
