Hello SnW bro's, anyone else still here from the original threads when this was airing? I gotta say I love this show for the atmosphere and setting and it has really stayed with me in the back of my mind ever since I first saw it. It really resonated with me and the way I see the (real) world evolving.

The kind of world that Sora no Woto shows might actually be a realistic vision for the future. Think about it, today we're moving towards ever greater globalization and intermingling of cultures and races. However, this is only possible in a world of rising wealth thanks to industrial prowess powered by the vast excess net-energy provided by fossil fuels.

As we slowly but inevitably hit the limits to growth, the world will move back towards local life and culture, a lower sustainable population that's around 1 billion people, we might even lose knowledge and access to some (high tech) technologies, etc. Of course this will surely not go over smoothly and peacefully. As dominant powers fight for survival and to preserve their part of an ever shrinking pie of wealth it's not unthinkable that we will see large scale devastation by world-wars and potentially even nuclear exchanges.

I see the world of Sora no Woto taking place after a scenario like this. Honestly even though the future might seem bleak, Sora no Woto makes me think that it might not be that bad. This show gives me hope that people can always adapt and that the potential for happiness keeps existing if you meet your challenges with the right attitude.
>>
>>143126601
The ending and the villain were just thrown in to give the show some sort of ending though, it's not as if it was central to the show.

Yeah, the payoff was weak, but it's still good as a whole. The only thing that really bothers me is that the production team totally squandered Mel Kishida's designs. I don't know how you would translate his stuff faithfully into animation, but still.

What's up? I didn't participate in much speculation, but it was great fun to read.

SnW was a pretty bittersweet show, but had some messages that really resonated with me. God tier atmosphere, too. If you guys have never watched this, do yourself a favor and at least listen to the OST:

I only left SnW feeling hopeful. It was a dead world, but people lived on. That's inspirational.

I wouldn't really say it's a depressing anime. Aside from the fact that there's no S2.

Yeah, it's not, I always felt that it's kind of "Sunshine always come after a storm".

What I meant is that the threads often take a depressing turn when an anon comes and posts something like "SnW aired x years ago, what have you acomplished during this time" and then depressing blogposts follow.

It got taken down for good because of CP or something. The archived stuff got moved to a new domain.

First one is where desustorage moved to.
Second one came up shortly after desustorage did (around late last October), and it's more reliable than desustorage was (as in it goes down far less often), but it doesn't save any Japanese text properly, which can be problematic for a board like /a/.

Haibane Renmei is essentially what SnW tried to be. It has a beautiful atmosphere and music and I think a lot of people who "get" SnW would appreciate it.

Sora no Woto is about personal happiness in an unkind world, while Haibane Renmei is about personal unhappiness in a kind one. Two sides of the same coin.

Haibane Renmei is by far the best example I can think of. It's more bittersweet than SnW though I'd say. The tragedy is on a more personal level.

Allison to Lillia has a load of similarities as well, but it's more lighthearted and adventure focused, with a romance aspect.

Or to use an example that's actually relevant to the board: like in Monster where everyone is actually speaking German (most of the time) with similar comments about Tenma's German ability by other character.

There's no actual evidence that they speak French in SnW as far as I can remember but it's not an unreasonable assumption.
>>
>>143163548
>There's no actual evidence that they speak French in SnW as far as I can remember but it's not an unreasonable assumption.

They write in French, so unless they're all some kind of weird bilinguals that use separate languages for writing and talking they should be speaking French. Plus, they clearly don't speak Japanese since they can't read moonrunes.

Carbon coating doesn't work that way, it only makes sure that there's no damage to the interior after the armor has stopped the special senshado rounds.
SInce Tank-kun already has that feature (meaning the senshado tanks can safelyfire at him), and since it DOES have simulation gear (that /could/ be configured to interact with the judging devices so he can "fire" at the senshado tanks AND mutually register their shots), yes. That means that a GuP/SnW friendly match could be possible following both series internal logics.
Now, about HWO to do it with EXTERNAL logics...

It would be nice if what you are saying is true but unfortunately it isn't. I used to be like you; full of optimism about "sustainable"energy and the ability of technology to solve humanities problems.

But after extensively studying fields like energy, economics, wealth creation, ecology, etc I have realized that there is no future for industrial society. I truly wish that green energy sources could succeed but they can't power industrial society. Many are hardy breaking even in terms of energy returned on energy invested (EROEI) and thats without taking into account the huge energy subsidies they receive from the current fossil fuel powered industrial system.

Green energy can better be described as fossil fuel extenders not as a standalone power-source that could replace fossil fuels. Consider also that 90% of people alive today are living of food-calories directly subsidized by fossil fuels. It's not for nothing that oil is called the lifeblood of the economy.

I would believe this if last month, Portugal hadn't run its entire power network on renewable sources alone for 107 hours (essentially, four days and a half). "But Portugal isn't a industrial super power!". Nearly a quarter of their GDP (23%) comes from their industry, not to speak of Germany, having them announce they were close to doing it as well. That is, discounting the facts that there are several large cities in Europe running on solar power alone, even during the night and poor luminosity days.

The oil lobby is only really powerful in the US, mainly because, unlike Europe, the US had a good supply of oil, whereas Europe had to colonize. When the colonization process started to end, they started to import, and if that becoming hard thanks to the instabilities in oil producing countries, they will have to find other energy sources.

>Consider also that 90% of people alive today are living of food-calories directly subsidized by fossil fuels
That's not because clean energy isn't good, but rather because fossil energy is cheaper.

That's the main issue I see with yours and the videos arguments. It seems to start from the assumption that the efficiency of renewable sources will stay as is instead of increasing, like the fossil fuels did over time. Fossil fuel energy at its inception, was also hard to process and to harvest. Those are inherent technological problems with every single new technology.

The only inherent downside renewable energy truly has over fossil fuel is that, at its current state, it is hard to harvest, but that will change with time, as it did for oil and coal.

>Many are hardy breaking even in terms of energy returned on energy invested (EROEI) and thats without taking into account the huge energy subsidies they receive from the current fossil fuel powered industrial system.

u w0t m8.

Most modern windmills pay back their entire lifetime energy need (construction, maintenance, destruction) within a year while they last for at least two decades, making for more than a 2000% return on investment. This is not experimental technology, unfortunately it's currently just slightly more expensive than fossil fuels still. Either way, it's completely possible to supply our power demand from renewable sources.

Also that youtube vid is complete bull as it is counting the entire economy as a cost on the system while then in the end stating that after subtracting this cost there's not enough left to power the economy. That's just silly. Furthermore for a "good initiation" I would expect more than some paint graphs and handwaving without any actual numbers mentioned. It is also extremely overdramatic. Looking at any other material he produced keeps showing the same pattern, endless talking about how he does something but never showing the actual thing. Just a lot of handwaving that it "may not be enough". It's also confusing monetary costs and energy costs continuously. And of course it ends with some sad music.

I'm sorry, but I find no reason to trust this rambling. Especially when recent studies from respected universities show we could sustainably produce all our energy needs from just wind alone several times over if we tried.
>>
>>143174280
Choosing a better art style would have complimented the character designs more. It looked way too much like they were aping KyoAni with the super-cuddly designs. Imagine if Sora no Woto looked more like Hanasaku Iroha.
>>
>>143180026
News like Portugal running on renewable energy seems promising but is very deceiving. Portugal is not a standalone entity, it's plugged in into a globalized industrial system. Could Portugal pay (in terms of energy) for the mining, fabrication, construction, maintenance, repair, dismantling and eventually replacement of its renewable energy infrastructure without fossil fuels or the foreign industries powered by fossil fuels? Not in a long shot. Not even by sacrificing their standard of living to abominable levels could they do it.

What actually happens is that Portugal has powered itself for 107 hours off renewable infrastructure that was "paid" for (in terms of energy) by fossil fuels. This infrastructure has a limited life-time before it all has to be replaced, but during its useful lifetime it produces useful energy. Now is all the energy it produces during its lifetime enough to replace all the infrastructure AND run the rest of society off? Like seriously everything from transportation to manufacturing, mining, waste disposal, heating, etc, in effect all the things that determine our standard of living.

The answer is NO. It takes vast amounts of energy to build sustainable energy infrastructure and the energy it gives back is not only little in relative comparison but also of low energy density, intermittent, and hard to store.

cont.
>>
>>143182249
Renewables have abysmally low EROEI that cannot run an industrial society. While true that efficiency can improve this, the kind of improvements necessary are absolutely humongous and in the order of magnitudes. Don't forget that technological innovation is also subject to the laws of diminishing returns and that the proverbial low-hanging fruit has long been picked.

Fossil fuels in comparison are absolutely packed with energy and take little effort in terms of energy to obtain, their EROEI is phenomenal, no other energy source even compares. Fossil fuels are NET energy, free energy available for productive use. The high EROEI of fossil fuels is directly responsible for the high standard of living we enjoy today. Net energy is by definition the ability to do work. Work, when used in productive purposes is what creates wealth. The net energy a society has at its disposal is directly proportional to the amount of wealth it can create.

Also yes, Europe is poor in natural energy sources. When import of energy products becomes harder we will look for alternatives but that doesn't guarantee we will actually find any, let alone anything that can rival oil. Nature owes us nothing. It's not because humans feel entitled to cheap abundant energy that nature has to provide us with it. The natural world just exists, it doesn't care. Nowhere in nature is there a rule that Human progress is ever upward and irreversible.

About the food calories again; look up the Haber-Bosh process. Fossil fuels are literally the fertilizer we use to grow the majority of the world's crops.

cont.
>>
>>143182303
I see that you (knowingly or not) adhere to the techno-utopist view. Almost everybody today does because for the last 200 years of gouging on fossil fuels we have known nothing else than progress and rising standards of living. The idea has taken a solid hold all over society.

I don't deny efficiency improvements, but these also come at a cost (in various ways) and have limits themselves. Technology is not magic, it's not infinite. Ultimately there are real limits on what is physically possible in this universe and the laws of nature enforce this absolutely. Technology is simply the application of the laws of nature and the possibilities ARE limited.

Thinking about reality also has to happen in a holistic way by incorporating all relevant knowledge from a wide range of fields. This is the only way you can even start to make sense of the hugely complex reality around you. I wouldn't even dare to claim that I can grasp the full truth of our subject at hand but I do have a good grasp on it and all evidence points to the unsustainability of industrial society.

>>
>>143182408

>>
>>143182196
By all means trust your own judgement If you feel like your have studied the subject deeply and in its entirety. I however feel like you have not even scratched the surface of knowledge about energyflows, dissipative systems, entropy and the organization of complex systems ontop of energy gradients.

Wind turbines are absolutely nothing like your description. These studies disregard whole swathes of externalities. Wind turbines are however indeed relatively good for renewables although hydro is much better.

You may or may not comprehend this but a deep truth is that money is indeed related to energy. First of all, money is a claim on wealth, NOT wealth itself. As wealth is impossible to create without (net) energy, the deepest of realizations is that money is a claim on energy.

And remember that claims only exert influence in the real world when they are used.

Guy, get off your high horse, all your replies are literally just handwaving with fancy language. You sound just like the guy making those videos, never finishing an argument, always continuing on tangent to tangent to tangent.

Also evidence or gtfo.

You make a fair point, but then again, piss is super interesting.

just fucking kill me f am, this is extremely tedious. Any guitarbros who have an arrangement of Hikari no Senritsu they can share?

>this new energy system was paid for and realized using the old and only energy system that you're trying to supplement
Yes. So?

>>143182303
>yeah sure, renewable sources can improve in efficiency
>but it's humoungously difficult and costful
Pic related

You're running in circles. I already acknowledged that fossil fuels, as is, have a better return for the investment. What's your point?

You also seem to think that energy production is a isolated economical system, when it most assuredly is not. It's almost a public utility by nature, and as such, governments intervene on it greatly. The industry wants to remain the same, governments take steps to improve the medium. That's how it always was and how it will always be for as long the economy governing system is capitalism.

Indeed, nature owes us nothing. That's why we always handled the problems ourselves, rather than wait for things to do it for us.
> Nowhere in nature is there a rule that Human progress is ever upward and irreversible.
12,000 years of constant technological evolution seems to implicate otherwise.

>>143182353
>200 years
See above

You again are running in circles. I already acknowledged that efficiency will come at a cost and that will most likely be paid by fossil fuel-generated wealth. Again, what's your point?

> Technology is simply the application of the laws of nature and the possibilities ARE limited.
Wrong and you're appealing to ignorance. Our understanding of the circumstances that govern our world and universe are ever changing. And technology is the answers and solutions to problems that we face. They aren't applications of the laws of nature as much they constrained by them. That's why research precludes efficiency improvements. You learn better ways to do the same thing.

Alright, seems like this discussion cannot go any further in a constructive way. Besides this thread is after all not really the place to discuss things like this.

I'd only like to add that I do not see energy production as an isolated economical system, quite the opposite in fact. I see the WHOLE economy as an energy system. Look up dissipative systems if you'd like to know more.

Also human history has been rife with collapses, technological regressions, loss of knowledge etc. On the whole the trend has been upwards though, up to now at least.

Truly the belief in technology in the modern age has replaced the belief in God before the enlightenment. Just as questioning God used to be heresy, questioning the power of technology today is perceived as very threatening to many peoples world-view.

I've looked up piano arrangements like those but they don't really translate well to classical guitar. I've got the lead voicing + the chords written down but the process of arranging them so that it'll sound nice on guitar is the tough part.

Thanks though.

>>143184968
I play classic guitar and I never had problems with piano arrangements, though.

Okay m8, we'll just have to see about the future. I kinda hope for your and my sake and the world in general that I'm wrong too. But sit back and enjoy the ride because we've entered the age of limits.

Day by day, year by year, see if the path the world is on is in line with what your model of reality is. I predict one thing: because of declining net energy available to society, standards of living will decline until we reach a new stable optimum. Economic growth in real terms will therefore also soon be a thing of the past.

Are you right? Am I? Something else? We'll see and let time judge who's statements made today will ring more true by 2050.

Reality has no model. Reality simply is. What we were talking about were assertions about the future, which we can't be sure. At least mine has precedence and real life examples to back it up. Yours only have baseless affirmations.

Yes reality exists separately from us and we only perceive it. If you were scientifically educated you would have long understood that I meant that we can't truly know reality so therefore we model it so our human mind can make sense of it.

Heh, "my" whole model is an evolving understanding of the world built upon and improved by many scientists and thinkers for more than a century. It is fully backed up from the ground up by scientific facts and real and historic evidence.

Pick up a book on thermodynamics for fuck sake, start by studying the basics sciences like physics, chemistry, mathematics (especially the exponential functions), continue with biology and ecology and learn about carrying capacity, study history, especially economic history and the industrial revolution, ... I could go one but I think I made my point. Sorry dude but you are way out of your league talking about energy. I encourage you to study this matter a lot more if it interests you. You should because it's fascinating

man i never finished this show when it aired. i got to the part where they were showing a piece of the optical system that was impossible to reproduce properly without lost technology so the guy was manually blowing and shaping it trying to mimic machine level precision. it made me have strong feels about the struggle humans have compared to the knowledge they lose due to a large scale war.

what episode was that? or should i rewatch the whole series? all these years...i feel like a bad person. forgive me katani chan.
