The endgame was pretty bad, the villain was boring and the pacing wasn't that great, still, a very great anime in terms of atmosphere and setting.

Hello SnW bro's, anyone else still here from the original threads when this was airing? I gotta say I love this show for the atmosphere and setting and it has really stayed with me in the back of my mind ever since I first saw it. It really resonated with me and the way I see the (real) world evolving.
The kind of world that Sora no Woto shows might actually be a realistic vision for the future. Think about it, today we're moving towards ever greater globalization and intermingling of cultures and races. However, this is only possible in a world of rising wealth thanks to industrial prowess powered by the vast excess net-energy provided by fossil fuels.
As we slowly but inevitably hit the limits to growth, the world will move back towards local life and culture, a lower sustainable population that's around 1 billion people, we might even lose knowledge and access to some (high tech) technologies, etc. Of course this will surely not go over smoothly and peacefully. As dominant powers fight for survival and to preserve their part of an ever shrinking pie of wealth it's not unthinkable that we will see large scale devastation by world-wars and potentially even nuclear exchanges.
I see the world of Sora no Woto taking place after a scenario like this. Honestly even though the future might seem bleak, Sora no Woto makes me think that it might not be that bad. This show gives me hope that people can always adapt and that the potential for happiness keeps existing if you meet your challenges with the right attitude.

Haibane Renmei is essentially what SnW tried to be. It has a beautiful atmosphere and music and I think a lot of people who "get" SnW would appreciate it.
Sora no Woto is about personal happiness in an unkind world, while Haibane Renmei is about personal unhappiness in a kind one. Two sides of the same coin.

Haibane Renmei is by far the best example I can think of. It's more bittersweet than SnW though I'd say. The tragedy is on a more personal level.
Allison to Lillia has a load of similarities as well, but it's more lighthearted and adventure focused, with a romance aspect.

But after extensively studying fields like energy, economics, wealth creation, ecology, etc I have realized that there is no future for industrial society. I truly wish that green energy sources could succeed but they can't power industrial society. Many are hardy breaking even in terms of energy returned on energy invested (EROEI) and thats without taking into account the huge energy subsidies they receive from the current fossil fuel powered industrial system.
Green energy can better be described as fossil fuel extenders not as a standalone power-source that could replace fossil fuels. Consider also that 90% of people alive today are living of food-calories directly subsidized by fossil fuels. It's not for nothing that oil is called the lifeblood of the economy.

That's not because clean energy isn't good, but rather because fossil energy is cheaper.
That's the main issue I see with yours and the videos arguments. It seems to start from the assumption that the efficiency of renewable sources will stay as is instead of increasing, like the fossil fuels did over time. Fossil fuel energy at its inception, was also hard to process and to harvest. Those are inherent technological problems with every single new technology.
The only inherent downside renewable energy truly has over fossil fuel is that, at its current state, it is hard to harvest, but that will change with time, as it did for oil and coal.

Most modern windmills pay back their entire lifetime energy need (construction, maintenance, destruction) within a year while they last for at least two decades, making for more than a 2000% return on investment. This is not experimental technology, unfortunately it's currently just slightly more expensive than fossil fuels still. Either way, it's completely possible to supply our power demand from renewable sources.
Also that youtube vid is complete bull as it is counting the entire economy as a cost on the system while then in the end stating that after subtracting this cost there's not enough left to power the economy. That's just silly. Furthermore for a "good initiation" I would expect more than some paint graphs and handwaving without any actual numbers mentioned. It is also extremely overdramatic. Looking at any other material he produced keeps showing the same pattern, endless talking about how he does something but never showing the actual thing. Just a lot of handwaving that it "may not be enough". It's also confusing monetary costs and energy costs continuously. And of course it ends with some sad music.
I'm sorry, but I find no reason to trust this rambling. Especially when recent studies from respected universities show we could sustainably produce all our energy needs from just wind alone several times over if we tried.

News like Portugal running on renewable energy seems promising but is very deceiving. Portugal is not a standalone entity, it's plugged in into a globalized industrial system. Could Portugal pay (in terms of energy) for the mining, fabrication, construction, maintenance, repair, dismantling and eventually replacement of its renewable energy infrastructure without fossil fuels or the foreign industries powered by fossil fuels? Not in a long shot. Not even by sacrificing their standard of living to abominable levels could they do it.
What actually happens is that Portugal has powered itself for 107 hours off renewable infrastructure that was "paid" for (in terms of energy) by fossil fuels. This infrastructure has a limited life-time before it all has to be replaced, but during its useful lifetime it produces useful energy. Now is all the energy it produces during its lifetime enough to replace all the infrastructure AND run the rest of society off? Like seriously everything from transportation to manufacturing, mining, waste disposal, heating, etc, in effect all the things that determine our standard of living.
The answer is NO. It takes vast amounts of energy to build sustainable energy infrastructure and the energy it gives back is not only little in relative comparison but also of low energy density, intermittent, and hard to store.

Nowhere in nature is there a rule that Human progress is ever upward and irreversible.
About the food calories again; look up the Haber-Bosh process. Fossil fuels are literally the fertilizer we use to grow the majority of the world's crops.

I see that you (knowingly or not) adhere to the techno-utopist view. Almost everybody today does because for the last 200 years of gouging on fossil fuels we have known nothing else than progress and rising standards of living. The idea has taken a solid hold all over society.
I don't deny efficiency improvements, but these also come at a cost (in various ways) and have limits themselves. Technology is not magic, it's not infinite. Ultimately there are real limits on what is physically possible in this universe and the laws of nature enforce this absolutely. Technology is simply the application of the laws of nature and the possibilities ARE limited.
Thinking about reality also has to happen in a holistic way by incorporating all relevant knowledge from a wide range of fields. This is the only way you can even start to make sense of the hugely complex reality around you. I wouldn't even dare to claim that I can grasp the full truth of our subject at hand but I do have a good grasp on it and all evidence points to the unsustainability of industrial society.

Wind turbines are absolutely nothing like your description. These studies disregard whole swathes of externalities. Wind turbines are however indeed relatively good for renewables although hydro is much better.

You also seem to think that energy production is a isolated economical system, when it most assuredly is not. It's almost a public utility by nature, and as such, governments intervene on it greatly. The industry wants to remain the same, governments take steps to improve the medium. That's how it always was and how it will always be for as long the economy governing system is capitalism.
