His most recent contribution to actual anime was to write one episode for middling Bones original Concrete Revolutio 20 episodes into the affair after most things were already laid out for him. Before that one episode of Wooser, before that 3 episodes of failed Gundam clone Aldnoah.Zero. I've noticed that if he doesn't have a large support base of equally popular people to set things in motion for him he's pretty much entirely capable of coming up with much of anything and writing the body of it's story anymore. He's forever carried by the popularity, talents and publicity of others around him as well as improbably banked cred from back in 2011 with Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero so in that respect maybe Kyoani would be a good fit not for him helping to revive their career but them helping to inject some new life into his.

1.- Avoid romance that isn't meant for gags.
Biggest examples of terrible romances in Kyoani shows are Chuu2Ren, KnK.
When the relationships are ambiguous or used for comedy like Free (for the sake of fujoshibait, could also be interpreted as friendship) and Amagi (it's jokey, it's light, it's nice) they're way better. At least when it comes to this studio.
2.- Get a good plot writer if you are going to do plots.
Kyoani is terrible at delivering when it comes to premises and/or world building. Give the audience a goal from the start and make the series about that goal and how it affects character relationships. A good example is Hibike. They don't seem to have a problem with SoLs.
3,- No otakubait. Just don't. Let the characters speak from themselves instead of forcing them, or go full head on with the pandering, no bait, the real deal. Yuribait? Fuck that shit, make it yuri. Fanservice? Show me da teetees, Or no otakubait at all and be completely sincere and pure about it. Don't be wishy washy about it.
4.- More male characters if you are going to have them.
I love cute girls doing cute things. You know what I don't love? A single guy surrounded by girls while every other male character is regarded as useless. It's pretty clear the guy is there for self-insertion. Don't have a character for self-insertion, make a cast. Have the boys banter, have the girls banter, have both of them play with their personalities and interactions.
That's it.
TL;DR: Don't be mediocre with the otakubait. All or nothing.
