I have a feeling you've never read LotR or F/SN. Nasu, if anything is long winded and likes to insert lots of pointless details. It's not uncommon for the flow of the story to stop for scenes and scenes of SoL tangents. I happen to like that in F/SN, but it is longwinded and pointless. Hell, "keeping the story rolling" is totally at odds with the very concept of a VN. Every time you dead end, the tone gets killed by the Tiger Dojo and you have to restart from your last save. Tolkien isn't perfect, but if there's anything to say about his writing, it's that one can tell every word is carefully considered. Jackson liberally inserted panning shots of the fellowship running to give the impression that the whole journey was about walking a bunch. But Tolkien was all about filling up the journey with lots of extra side adventures, battles and conversations.

In the hobbit triliogy they just used a green screen to make the hobbits and dwarves seem small. Most of gandalf scenes were either on his own or with the dwarves and bilbo, so he was mostly acting on his own.
