One thing I'd recommend against the general guide is to study grammar after picking hiragana/katakana.
You'll pick some basic vocab on most guides from examples, some kanjis as well, and when your grammar is SOLID, you can read pretty much anything with a dictionary as you build your grammar.

It's very easy to tell them apart once you see them written next to each other.
Just look at the direction and order of the strokes. ツ is written from left to right and the long stroke is nearly horizontal, while ツ is written from right to left and the long strike is a lot closer to vertical.

Not really, but it sounds like you're still in the Tae-Kim mindset where you need to translate everything to English first. It might be awkward in English but that's a really common way to express that something sure is nice. You'll get used to it really quickly because of how frequent it it.

I'd suggest if you're stuck on something look up other sentences that use the same grammar to get a sense of how it's used in Japanese
Jisho's pretty good for that, it has English translations as well to make it even easier to see how it works, just type something in Japanese with #sentence afterwards

For a beginner it can be hard to keep a 3 lines long sentence in head, especially if it has 5 new words in it that he just met and looked up.
That's why it can help to translate parts of it into English and focus only on the small part in Japanese that you didn't understand.

Writing is so much harder than I expected. I'm struggling with あ, although it is my first day. I filled an A4 sheet and maybe 10% of them look decent.
It's like learning to draw. Is handwriting much more strict in Japanese? Are there examples of bad, but acceptable writing?

The majority of Japanese handwriting is atrocious, it's the same kind of fast sloppy shit you'd expect in any country but with three times the complexity and 10+ more strokes than you get with English letters, I'm sure you can imagine where problems arise

Why would you need one? They're literally the same except they have a couple of extra buttons for turning the IME on/off and switching between hiragana, katakana and latin characters. You can easily just rebind those special keys to something like SUPER+SPACE for the IME control and CTRL+1, CTRL+2, CTRL+3, etc. for kana and have exactly the same functionality without paying what will probably be a fortune for a much worse keyboard than you could buy for half the price if you just got a normal one.

Well that's obviously an お because of the little thingy. You just have to see in あ there's the vertical line then it does the loop which starts from above at the right, while in お the loop is continued from the vertical line.
Just look up hiragana in google images, look at the Wikipedia image with the stroke orders, and that's it.

The reason I read through 3 chapters of Yotsuba today (which doesn't sound like much but it took me quite a while to do) is simply because I'm enjoying the story. I didn't have to force myself to do it, I did it because I wanted to.
If you're having to force yourself to read Hanahira, then maybe you should try picking up something else instead that makes you actually want to read it.

Reading and writing are separate skills... sort of. Being able to recognise a character when you see it used in a familiar word does not, in most cases, grant you the ability to write that character at will. However, if you know how to write a particular character then being able to recognise that character when it's used in words is a given.

The A Dictionary of Japanese Grammar books are perfect for that sort of thing and there is an anki deck covering the three published books. Is this not in the anon made learner overview guide? You would assume it be suggested right along with learn the phonetic script and use one of the iknow Core vocabulary anki decks, for the basics.

You have to constantly apply the grammar you learn if you want to retain it. Conveniently, it's easy to apply grammar because it shows up anywhere there's Japanese involved.
The idea is not to read Tae Kim and memorize the "meanings" of all the grammatical structures so you never have to look them up later. You're supposed to read the descriptions for the pieces of grammar he covers, make sure you see the sense in how they work, and look out for them later. With time they become more natural.
If you end up reading a sentence with some grammar you've heard before but don't really get, then you look up some examples on something like alc.co.jp or see if you can reconcile it with the DOJG description or some other Japanese grammar resource out there.

Although the guide doesn't like it, one thing WaniKani has right is their flashcard system. Definitely like having to type the answers out to see if they are right, rather than just doing it in my head like on Anki.

There is such a thing as mental fatigue. Even if you take breaks, it builds up. There is only so much you can reasonably hope to learn in a day.
Don't rush. This isn't a race. Accept that it's going to take you a long time to reach your goal and focus on sustainable habits.

Before I started 50 new cards a day I had a correct rate on mature cards of 93%. Now it goes slowly down to 85-91%. But on the other site I know much more words. It depends on how much time you want to put in. If you don't wanna learn for some years do more cards.
And you can still put it down to 20 again after some weeks to get the reviews down.

I only make them up when I'm having a really hard time remembering a kanji, and it doesn't necessarily have to be "stories" either, just make some random shit up with the radicals, something not too complex so that it doesn't take effort to remember the mnemonic (because that would defeat the purpose of a mnemonic), but something good enough that you can at least start connecting dots in your head back to what the kanji meant.

会意 make up a small percentage of known characters (about 8%, I think?) but they're generally pretty easy to remember since they are so logically assembled.
Most 国字 are 会意文字: 込、働、圦 and so on, while quite a few also encode phonetic data.

What do you guys think about occasionally skipping a more obscure sentence? Obviously I'm not talking about doing it to the point where you don't understand the story, but for example even after 2-3 years of reading, every hour or so I meet some expression or sentence that I just can't figure out even after spending half a minute on it, and then I just move on if it's not critical to the main part of the story.
I found that the usual rule applies here too, you spend 80% of the time pondering about 20% of the text. If you allow a bit of a skipping, that can greatly increase your reading speed.
