Basically, yes. iDOLM@STEr, or just about any part of idol shows has all the right ingredients to trigger Western sensibilities. Young, mostly teenage, girls surrounding an older male who grooms' them for business practices while also gaining their affections. Throw in things like pai touches and it's basically a posterchild for hate from Western foreigners.
People over here think that real life idol groups, where most of the girls are annywhere from 16-28, are pedo already. Actual cartoon girls (think of muh cartoon children) are a step beyond that and even though it's not the worst out there, it's bad enough.

iM@S's 2011 anime handled its characters horribly and oversimplified them. Yukiho is reduced to a moeblob who's scared of men and digs holes. Takane does nothing but say mysterious things, eat a lot and stare at the moon.
CG's anime handled its characters better on average, but the plot went to complete shit in the second half as they forced drama in everything everywhere with the introduction of Mishiro because fuck fun thing, we drama now. And Mio was incredibly shitty in the anime, it made her a self-centered bitch and never gave justice to how she is in the games. Not to mention the horrifyingly bad quality control; even though Bamco threw a shitload of budget at A1 for the CG anime they STILL fucked up and ended up delivering tons of QUALITY and slideshow dance scenes. CG is even more of a disgusting failure of an anime than the first one.
Love Live's franchise does not have a lot to offer. There are only 18 main girls as opposed to the literally hundreds that iM@S has to offer, so there's a lot less variety and potential for waifus (especially if you like lolis or cakes). However, the Love Live anime is excellently handled and feels much more like a labor of love and passion than iM@S's aimless and soulless anime which are more meant to advertise their games than stand alone as a good anime like LL.

I agree with this, and it really brings up the important point that prior knowledge of a franchise really colors one's opinion on the anime that it spawned. Admittedly, I still consider the first episode of the Idolmaster anime one of the greatest anime experiences of my life, but almost everything after that (at least in the first cour) let me down horribly. The second half of the series was better thankfully, but the girl of the week formula was never that good.
CG almost had it right. They ditched the girl of the week formula, and up to I'd say episode 3, I would have told you that the show was miles ahead of the first IM@S series. But then the show went full FUCK EVERYTHING. I don't even want to think that the show exists anymore. The only good we got out of it was a handful (literally, you could probably count them on one hand) of good eps, and it was an easy vehicle for voiceless idols to get voiced. THAT'S IT.
Conversely, I came into Love Live blind and was able to enjoy it quite a bit. Honestly, I don't even know what all the hate between the franchises is about. If you like idol anime, enjoy idol anime.

In my original post I was referring only to the west community and /a/ otakus in particular. Oricon ranks were just to show that Aquors is not that big yet compared to muse.
Idols are different for Japanese because fans can attend their concerts and events, they have easy access to all the merchandise, they can follow them on twitter and read/understand all interviews and news, they are under heavy marketing all the time. Their whole idol ideology is on completely different level. Songs and idols can't be separated, they are part of the same idol culture. And it's undeniable that LL dominated IM@S in Japan.
But I'm talking about LL and IM@S fans here on /a/. We don't have concerts or events and we can't easily buy their CDs and dakimakuras. It's just my pure observation (which obviously can be wrong) that majority of LL fans on /a/ care less about music than IM@S fans.

Bandai always makes sure they have staggered releases so they never come out during the same week. All I know is that even Aqours debut single has outsold iDOLM@STERs best selling CD ever so you are correct but there are some iDOLM@STER CD's that have done better than the Aqours sub units so it's not always a slam dunk. Some of the composers who worked on IM@S songs had done LL songs and vice versa. Even the VAs for both sides have worked together, sung together and are pretty much bros.
The only difference between IM@S and LL is the animation studios. IM@S is animated by A-1 Pictures while LL is animated by Sunrise. You can be on whatever side of the idol factions you want, but Bamco is winning all our wallets in the end.

I watched both LL and Im@s, and while I liked them both, Im@s is much better both in terms of songs and characterization.
LL has an advantage in the area of character interaction tho, due to them being an idol group managed by the members themselves, which leaves more room for character sheaningans but at the same time this made the series feels like your average high school slice of life but with some songs in between, also too much DRAMA.
