If this arc is supposed to mirror the original Future Trunks arc then it'll be Gohan breaking through and defeating the main villain.
Reveal that Master Roshi was behind it all, and is actually the strongest being in the multiverse. He explains to Goku that he planned it all from the beginning, and created this universe because he was bored.
Instead of fighting, Goku enters a state of catatonic confusion and his soul floats through the multiverse as he contemplates what could've been.
This is interspersed with scenes of Roshi beating the shit out of anyone who dares to battle him. We see him defeat Platinum Diamond Frieza and Omega Cell.
When Goku returns after his soul journey, he realizes that he is trapped in a manga and anime, after the terrifying realization that the anomalies he has witnessed throughout his life, as well as the lapses in logic and the violations of basic cause and effect (or at least, correlations of such) do not seem consistent with a functioning reality, and thus, there must be a more substantial and "real" reality that their universe is nothing but a simulation within and thereof.

The thing with Piccolo was exactly what I meant. I know Toriyama took the first step with putting him instead of Gohan in the tournament but it just doesn't feel like he is going to accomplish smth. with his for now limited potential. I don't know how I would write it but he needs a power up.

Gohan had already been fighting. Gohan already had his training. Gohan returned to fight Vegeta on his own. Goku was literally a heap on the ground and Vegeta was gonna fucking kill him and destroy the earth.
Of course he told Gohan to fight him 1v1 you tard. Spirit Bomb was their last hope and now they had a way to use it with Gohan and Krillin there.
Only reason Goku couldn't use it before is because he didn't have time to prep. Gohan provided that time and now it was actually a viable tactic.

Vegeta, who in base form should be somewhere among Buu's level, had to turn into SSJ to make it a quick victory against Frost. That means that Frost is quite more powerful that Freezer in the Namek arc, although not nearly as powerful as Freezer in RoF. So for Piccoro to be able to fight against him is pretty impressive, actually.

Everyone seems to be shitting on Super. I picked it up again a few days ago. Currently working through the Frieza Arc and I'm actually enjoying it.
Love that they brought back Ginyu, one of my all-time favourite DBZ characters. Was he in the Fukatsu no F film, or did they just put him in the Super version? Never watched that film.
Anyway yes, animation ranges from terrible to almost acceptable and it's a shame. But it's still entertaining for the most part.

Here in a a couple dozen episodes make Goku and Vegeta realize they've ascended so far into god hood that they themselves are inevitably going to trap themselves into a higher dimension in order to control their power and avoid collapsing their dimension, leave them as gods of combat and protectors of the universe who can only respond to threats from the multiverse or rogue gods of destruction, and push them into a new caste of gods that overlooks the entirety of existence after.
After that's happened fast forward a bit to a new threat, after the saiyans have mixed in enough with the humans that they are far more human than saiyan and won't be able to "lol six year old super saiyan" all over any threat.
Open with a tournament arc with Gohans great great grandchildren or something fighting in it, repping their hercule lineage, which will proceed as normal until the very end where it reveals master roshi in the stands with android 18, observing the next generation of fighters, and pans up to the new guardian of the earth, a young Namekian hatchling that's only now reaching maturity.
After revealing our next generation of fighters we see Goku and Vegeta fighting in the highest level of the multiverse, because they're saiyans, and suddenly they feel a blip of energy. Childs play to them but a serious threat to their descendants, as they watch it from on high they both say some kind of catch phrase, Goku saying "this could be bad" or something like it and Vegeta responding with "non sense kakarot, it looks like a worthy challenge for (insert great great grandchilds name here) the prince of all saiyans!"
And then our new threat is revealed, androids? Aliens? Demons?

Exactly, and that's why Toriyama thought it seemed it was fitting if she was de-aged to be paired with kid Trunks. That would put them almost on the same level despite Mai's chronological age.
Hilariously, the detractors to this ship seem to forget the fact that she has the maturity of a little girl. They seem to focus on the fact that she's some few years older than Bulma.
That was the running gag with her and the other two, though. Out of the three, she was the one that looked the more serious as an adult, yet that element served as a contrast. That's why it was funny.
Granted, that element seems to be sort of lost now that they were de-aged, but Toriyama wanted them to bring those three back in the story, and having them interact with the young characters was the way to go.

If anything, they need to properly go with a tone.
In the beginning Akira really went for a light-hearted adventure story with it's occasional serious and/or high stakes moments. Around the time the Saiyans were introduced, the mood seemed to change to a more dense one; everything was at stake. Especially the Namek saga did this really well.
That kind of got lost in the Android/Cell saga where the villains could not be overcome, but posed no immediate threat either. Toriyama tried to do both during the Buu Saga but failed, even if it was amusing.
Super so far has been bad at both; if the Buu saga was tense with mediocre fun stuff, this has been mediocre fun stuff with mediocre tension. It just doesn't feel like there's anything at stake for the characters at any time. Nor is it as fun as pre-DBZ.
