I like how that's actually mentioned in FMP. Despite the fact FMP's mecha are quite literally futuretech, they still can't carry weapons as powerful or armour as tough as tanks, which is why when they have a desert flatlands encounter they have to exert a lot of effort to beat them.

While they could end the franchise here and that would, apart from me wanting more, be okay, I think they could do a second season/sequel OVAs. This felt more like the end of Part I of the narrative instead of a grand finale, though if it ends here that's what the movie will be. They finally saved their school and Miho and her sister have truly reached an understanding. She still needs to talk with Shiho and the World Tournament still looms on the horizon. That's not counting things they could do with the other characters, I do think the whole Mika as a Shimada thing has potential here. There are a lot of interesting directions the franchise can take from here.
