I don't know how to explain it but to me it didn't fit with the rest of HxH and I felt nothing for Pairo or the bond he had with Kurapika. To me it cheapened Kurapika's personality and his revenge mission. But I think Togashi is aware of this in a way, didn't he say backstories were always difficult for writers because readers have all kinds of expectations.
