Outlaw Star was pretty shitty when you take off the nostalgia goggles. It squandered what potential and momentum it had after the first 4 episodes. The actual bad guys in the form of the kei pirates are largely irrelevant until the end, and most of the series is about getting money for repairs and Caster shells

I rewatched OS recently and it's still great. To me it hits all the high points for the sort of stuff I like.
Gene is the tough guy protagonist, but knows when to dial it back. He's also smart, but not some sort of Aizen tier plotter or anything.
Jim is a great sidekick, and his episodes were excellent.
Melfina, for someone so important, could have used a bit more focus at times, but she was a good character overall.
Aisha is one of the best animu girls ever, hands down.
The rest of the supporting cast was good too- Hilda, Fred, and the Anten 7 were cool.
It was one of my favorites when I first watched it and it still is now. there is a fair amount of QUALITY in there, but it's not distracting.

No, Outlaw Star is three volumes. I own all three. And it has been translated -- the first volume, and the first chapter of volume 2, which is an ongoing scanlation. There are a few magazine-only chapters that were never reprinted, but good luck finding those.

I've been rewatching OS myself and I still absoulutely love it. It's one of those rare shows that loved all of the characters. Sure, somethings could've been developed more (We never get much focus on Suzuka, and I kind of wish Melfina and Jim's mother and son like relationship was explored a bit more) but each character had a moment to shine and bounced off of each other well. They were so fun to watch that I was sad to see the show end. I wanted it to go on. I have never had any other anime give me that kind of feeling.
And Gene Starwind is probably the closest we'll ever get to an anime equivilent of Bruce Campbell. His english dub actor is god tier. The fact that he doesn't do voice over roles anymore is a damn crime.
