People were talking about the game as well in the forums about the camera angle being messy. Dezel and Edna brother death not being necessary. Rose being completely immune to being an Malevolence despite her actions being evil. Which gave her the title of being called a "psychopath" by some fans of the game because she is so "pure".

I played the game and it was surprisingly good. You all give it a lot of underserved hate. I liked how the battle system was like a more responsive, quicker paced version of Tales of Graces. Xillia was too damn gimmicky with every character having a million input commands and combo possibilities.

It`s really not just the waifu thing. The game felt more like a step down from Graces with less combo possibility. Obligatory party members were a mistake, the Seraphim as a whole felt very limited thanks to having very few types of elemental atacks compared to the two humans and don`t even get me started on the skill/equip system. Is it a terrible game? I don't think so, I liked it, but it's not great either even for Tales standards.

The title system left something to be desired, but the weapon skill and fusion system was good and left plenty of opportunity for customization. The skill acquisition system in Xillia was a straight copy of FF13 and 12.
Also, the combo system was decent too. Are you one of those scrubs who just presses circle all the time in mid to low difficulty fights and never read the monolith tutorials? You can swap characters mid combo and chain into new combos, you know. Set your partner to attack the same enemy and swap once your gauge is empty for prolonged chains and stunning potential. In Zestiria both the martial and hidden arts commands are responsive to directional input, like in Xillia.

The skill system was grind as hell. The idea was fine, but the fact that the skill stayed with the weapon killed it. Suddenly you get new equips but you can't use because it will fuck up all the others skills you have and decrease your stats. Sure you could fuse equips and find new ones with the skills you want, but you can do fine without bothering so it just became a nuisance. You can also swap characters in other games, without being limited to a 4 combo move like in Zest, and even if you can have a ability that cancels this 4 combo limit, the skill system is still more of a chore than anything. In the end you just decide to power trough instead of spending hours on a boring grind system.

I was hoping to see Alisha armatized in the after story as the main story hinted it when Sorey revealed his plan to seal himself off and serve as a conduit between Maotelus and his army of squires who would go around purifying hellions. He even used Alisha as an example of someone who could be a potential candidate who would wield his full powers and be able to armatize in his absence.

That's what people were talking about, Mikleo fights at Sorey's non-dominate hand to make up for Sorey's blind spots. But when Sorey temporarily loses his vision in one eye Mikleo temporarily switches sides to make up for Sorey's blind eye. Then once Sorey regains his vision he switches sides.
I bought the game because I enjoyed the Zestiria OAV.
But the story was so bland I couldn't finish it. Combat was okay but something felt a little off.

It's actually looking legitimately good. Protagonist with convictions who isn't a 'muh morals' 100% bland self-insert type of character like Sorey? Check. Interesting intro? Starts in a motherfucking prison on an island like fucking Grimrock and your party (mostly) consists of broken, imprisoned rebels. There's even a fucking /ss/ canon pairing between the Velvet and Laphicet.
The characters don't look like they're going to be insufferable either like some of them did in the Zest trailers, and, if some of the theorizing is correct, it's going toward a tragic ending rather than a 'muh everything is gonna be alright', which kinda makes sense. Like, Aizen is almost surely Edna's brother, for instance, and we all know how THAT ends.
I guess the one caveat is it's probably going to be a bit edgy since the entire party's long-term objective is to kill Artorius, but I'd take edge over muh morals any day.

You get more explanations for the spirit side of things, as as well as Milla's version of events when the group splits happen. Because the novel comes from Sorey's persepctive you get to see how Sorey sees other characters. This is especially true for character descriptions. Sorey himself is only describe as being a brunette. Alisha is described by her armor and the way she speaks and carries herself (Sorey basically figures out that she's a princess very quickly), Lailah is just described as wearing a dress and having long hair, Rose is a NPC, etc. The only character that gets described differently is Mikleo whom Sorey goes full purple prose when describing, and the only one whose physical features are known.
