It's not homoerotic in nature, but it's similar to his obsession with Griffith in the golden age arc, he never really learned to live out of his shadow. Keep in mind he still considers Griffith his best friend, a best friend who he hates more than anyone else, but a friend nonetheless.

Griffith is precious to Guts because he's his goal. Guts has nothing but anger and hatred to for Griffith and his goal is to kill him. As Guts has nothing else but these feelings, whose manifestation is the hound without Griffith he has nothing as noted in the first chapters after the eclipse where Guts is just mindlessly thrashing around killing random apostles without a goal to the point he abandons Casca. After the eclipse this anger is directed to the reborn Griffith. Guts now is conflicted between his anger, the hound, and actually regaining back the family he had, in the form of his RPG party. If he chooses his family then he can deny his anger hence destroying the hound. Since Casca is still the most important person to him if she was gone Guts would devote himself to his revenge something that benefits the hound.

It really should be more dangerous for her to just wander around, but somehow it's not.
I know she had the one thing on her side, but he's gone now, seemingly. So maybe she has another patron. Maybe it really is literally "Fated" that she won't die until some important juncture, as she is essential for the "Fated" encounter between Guts and Griffith. If that's true a lot of evil things might be unwilling or unable to attack her, and might likewise slaughter anyone who attacked her.
Or maybe Griffith has a soft spot for her, even if he doesn't realize it. Part of what he did was out of jealousy, maybe, and not just "fuck you Guts, look what I'M DOING", although that was still a big part of it.

It hasn't advanced much since then. They're past the Sea God arc, and I am fairly certain the Squid Pirates are dead. They made it to Puck's island, but some Magic users set upon them with Golems and a giant burning Wicker Man.
The Miura got busy with the show, which is going to start off with the Black Swordsman arc.
But it's all like mid-grade CGI, so, you know. Take it as you will.

Griffith was the sort of person who was always in charge of his destiny and considered himself the MC of his own life. He had a dream and the ability to reach it and he worked towards it and it was great.
Then comes Guts, who defies his control, but who he can subdue with his Mary Sue powers. He befriends/subdues Guts and they get along and their friendship is mutual.
At some point, he realizes that the shared dream of the Band of the Hawks has become more important than his dream of taking his own kingdom, but that's fine; he reconciles his dream to taking his own kingdom and basically making the Band of the Hawk into his court.
Then Guts leaves. Griffith tries to stop him but he can't. He's absolutely gutted. Never mind that he is pretty much the prince in all but name and he's beaten all opposition to him and he's about to reach his dream, it's not the same without Guts. Everything is going out of control for him and he decides to try and take it all back by fucking the princess.
Through a series of very unfortunate circumstances (the maid seeing him, his lack of a sword, daddy's lolicon tendencies), he is captured and tormented and frankly speaking Griffith doesn't care about himself or the Hawks because his dream is dead, and more importantly, he realises that it had been dead ever since he got close to the Hawks and allowed himself to share his dream.
Then the Eclipse happens.

The tragedy is that Griffith never meant that shit about people making their own sparks, because to him, they were all HIS sparks. Guts took it the wrong way and thought he had to strike out on his own, but Griffith needed them all together to make it work.
Another thing is that in just about any other universe, Griffith would have basically been the Mary Sue MC who can do no wrong and is basically invincible thanks to the protection of fate/plot/God/etc. But considering Miura had Guts (the MC) raped by a giganigga within 20 pages of narrating his childhood, there's no way Griffith was getting off with anything less. Worse, because you need to be plunged into absolute despair to use a Behelit, Griffith was allowed to climb to the cusp of fulfilment before being dropped into the depths of misery.
If you ask me, the use of the Behelit requires an act of will; the act of saying "I sacrifice" is a supremely selfish deed that says that you will abandon the part of you which is human for power, symbolized by having the people you care for turned into demon rapesnacks.
There is nobody in the series with a stronger will than Guts. He has also gone through pretty much all the standard torments most people can imagine and come out swinging. The lengths to which the universe will have to go in order to break him enough to use the Behelit will be... extreme.
And if he does succumb, I wonder how powerful of an Apostle that will produce?

It can't. Casca is Griffith's Sacrifice. The Count in The Black Swordsman arc tries to use Guts as his Sacrifice, and they state that he can't because 1) He isn't someone close to his heart, and 2) He's Femto's sacrifice, so he can't use him anyway.
They also say that anyone branded is essentially dead now.

Nah, they just made landfall on what is presumably the island of the Elf King (so far they have only encounter hot witches and pickup stix golems).
And I think when it comes to that, the series ends; if Guts can put away his rage enough to walk away from Griffith, he's not worth following as the MC, and if he does manage to kill a Godhand with whatever his Apostle upgrades give him, then I'm willing to bet he'll basically become the Hellhound forever.
