It seems clear that he was intentionally letting Hisoka build preconceptions about his plan, then acting in a way that matched those projected preconceptions, and it worked out in his favour by allowing him to get the upper hand through surprise. I was pretty skeptical of the explanation myself, but I think it makes sense strategically now.

His powers were level enough until the whole Bookmark thing, and now the "Persisting after Death" thing.
Before that atleast he could only use one ability at a time, but now he can literally use 3 or 4 and there's no limit to his potential. The only thing that makes him still likeable to me is he's charismatic and cool enough not to abuse his abilities or go super-flashy on everyone in the same cocky way Hisoka would if he had anywhere near the same skillset.
That, and he's not abusing his powers directly, he's playing it smart and using them in an incredibly tactical, strategic way. If it was anyone else with these powers Hisoka would've done them in long ago by now.

See that's according to what we can see. He didn't get this cocky just by killing Kastro and Gotoh. I don't think his so full of himself because he faced weaker opponents all this time.
But he is not usually a POV character. His big wins are never in focus. To take him down a peg he needs a significant win first. And this is one of the most appropriate adversaries to give his claims legitimacy, with his book of anything goes. That's why I think he has to win this fight before he finally gets defeated.

If Chrollo had gone about his plan without having to explain a single thing (per his restriction), there's no way Hisoka would figure it out before he got exploded or blackbox'd. He cannot do it like that because the clones would disappear if he tried to switch to bookmark'd Sun and Moon. He'd have to use Gallery Fake, Bookmark'd-Sun, then close GF and use Bookmark'd Moon, and finally turn the page to just use the bookmark again with Order Stamp. It's a few steps more but even an extra second in HxH time is enough to tip his hand to Hisoka.
And this is assuming the explosion would be powerful enough to destroy the stadium, when the one used on the Ref was barely a firecracker.

I think a light tap sun/moon seal will be the same as the little bloom Genthru used to blow Gon's hand off.
Normally I'd think a long exposure sun/moon seal would be equivalent to Genthru's Bomber skill, since that had a long timer, and an explanation on how to undo the bomb attached to it, but since this is after-death nen we're talking about, I'd wager it's twice the power at least.
I don't know how long the seal affixation would have to be, but we should assume we're not seeing its full power in this fight anytime soon.

Maybe that would be true for another battle shounen but HxH fights don't go that way or the goalposts are moved slightly (like Gon beating Hanzo technically rather than physically, and 'winning' against Hisoka with a punch but losing overall). Planned out fights often go the way they're supposed to (the bomber, Netero vs Meruem, Kurapika vs Uvo) and over confident opponents often win.
