"This show has become progressively less interesting as they've butchered the execution of its plot after the premise was properly exposed, and this ending - which I've been waiting for for weeks - has done nothing to alleviate that issue. Such a lazy waste of a rather decent ending theme, doesn't relate to the current plot or any of the current characters' emotions and experiences. Gongenzaka isn't even a character I pay much heed to at this point: I find his most interesting aspect is this random development of his interaction with Sawatari.
ARC V has done a lot better than Zexal - which wasn't a bad show by any stretch - but then it hasn't had to be too inventive up to this point. The Synchro arc comprised half the series up to now and its themes were already laid out in 5Ds for the most part and have simply been restated for the past year. That arc was really freaking disappointing, and although the opening and Fusion Dimension brought with it a couple of promising twists the time spent in Heartland was BORING. It reintroduced one Zexal character - one. And I really felt like it would have done Zexal's creators a lot of justice to have a second crack at them in a slightly more mature setting than the last series.
But yeah, bad ending to a worsening program. Such a shame."

Synchros were the next evolution, the shining light of hope. The contrast is intentional. It's solidified with Illiaster but even dark signer pawns used dark synchros, the opposite of regular synchros.
And most duelists did use synchros.

Zexal was stupid, but it ran with it and didn't look back. It helps that it actually had a semblance of production values, since it's not like you can really expect that much more out of Yugioh anime beyond the spectacle of it.

During Yuya's first duel against Reiji, we learn from Sora that "D/D/D" means "Different Dimension Demon". My guess is that the overlords at Konami would've never had the idea to use an abbreviation such as "D/D" if UDE hadn't done it first.
