It isn't really a power fantasy unless you're blatantly self inserting into the villain protagonist, and even then his screentime in some of the LN volumes is really low (The Lizardmen Arc is almost entirely about the Lizardmen).
Much of what is interesting about Overlord are the side characters and the lore of the world. The political intrigue of the Kingdom and Empire is also interesting.
Overlord is basically an inversion of popular tropes in this genre. Instead of following a generic shounen fuckboy start from the bottom and work his way up (usually with an overfocus on getting stronger) to fight the big bad at the end, you approach the story from the opposite end of the spectrum from a big bad's point of view (albeit a benevolent one). Ainz is already at the top and no one else in the story has shown to be approaching his power level (except for a few of his subordinates and possibly some hinted characters which we do not yet know the full extent of their abilities). Thus the series focuses more on the psychoanalysis, character development, and general world building. Whereas most other series in this genre are more about the raw fight scenes, the building up of powerlevels, and an overdosage of moralfaggotry every episode.

Probably because I'm much older (45) than most of /a/, but when you get to the point people you grew up with start dying, and the only connection you have left to them are their kids, Overlord hits closer to home than most anime do. It's lonely when your friends are dead and it's just you, and even knowing their kids really well they're not substitutes for them.
The anime dragged toward the end and Ainz/Momonga didn't get enough characterization to really explain him rolling with the evil lich idea, but it was fun and personal show.

It kind of depends. He is slowly but surely slipping away into actually becoming his 'mask'. By the time Vol. 7 rolls around this is really apparent.

Yes. It's pretty enjoyable. Fair warning though, the translation takes a bit to warm up. I remember volumes 1 and 2 being a bit too try and there being a fair bit of typos. It gets better, though. I don't recall there being anything that bad in the later volumes.
