Sad thing is, it is probably going to become a classical hero story. That's probably why he is too strong, maybe to give the sense of crushing defeat when Subaru ultimately fights him. Maybe the story end where Subaru is considered to be the foul creature that the saint, dragon and sages sealed? I just very well might be a rinse and repeat story. I mean, the author IS a sadist. Not to mention that most of the bishops and witches have quite sympathetic backstories and drives.

What if Subaru gets somewhat involved and blamed for Rein's death?
Now he would be enemies with his friends, vegetal girlfriend and no one more to rely on.
Instead of crushing him by the hands of someone we knoe can crush him (by sensing evil intentions) the moment he sets foot in the dark path, I think it would be far worse to force Subaru to be completely alone while fighting someone he doesn't really want to.
And because Reinhardt is loved by all, is too strong and too perfect in everything, he's also the perfect material to create this scenario.

What if, he was forced to kill Rem? Maybe when she revives she manifests as some sort of twisted soul who tried to kill him but still loves him? What if it will be like Helck except no one will stop him from doing so?Because in arc 5 we were shown that Gluttony seems to have the personalities of everyone they "ate". At one point one of the Gluttony assumes the personality of Rem, and she manifests as this twisted, tortured soul version of Rem that still loves Subaru but is hideously insane and evil.
So there is a strong chance that she will become a broken soul once revived.
