Actually if you bulk order (especially used sets) you can save a ton. Several sets that I have ordered (after shipping prices) were about $3-4 per volume. Even new individual volumes usually come out to about $8-10 per volume, as compared to being about $12 to buy the English localized versions. You just need to buy in bulk - and I mean bulk. I typically will only order if my total is ~$200.
Oh, and the shipping from Amazon is very fast. I live in a rural area in the US and generally get my books within 3 days.

If something is described as "new" on Amazon, fulfilled by them, they can't fuck with you and give you a used product, right? I'm asking because I got the To Love-Ru Venus artbook new. It came in shrinkwrap and all, but the outer plastic cover looks kind of scuffed-up for lack of a better word, but only if you really look at it. The real issue is that it looks like it was dropped at some point in time onto something hard, as the top edge is bit depressed at one part, and there's a small spot on the back cover that's also pushed in, extending through the dust cover into the actual hard cover.
First real artbook I've gotten, so not sure if it's expected that there are some slight defects, and if it's worth returning over.

Let's clarify the differences.
Nendoroid are chibi while cu pouche are a semi chibi, which has it's own aesthetic value. Nendoroid and cu-pouche of a same character usually have some variation in parts. Cu-pouche may have extensions that wrap around a characters waste allowing more posability instead of being limited to the stand holes like nendoroid, while nendoroid sometimes has attachments that capture the moment in a way cu-pouche lacks.Can't we just all like fun things?

I am ordering one doujinshi each from 3 stores where they're all "storefront" items, so they would send the invoice with shipping calculation a few days after the order.
Does anybody know if they give you the option to change your shipping method at the time of payment? If not, which is going to be the better option for 1 doujinshi orders: SAL small packet or DHL? I know DHL is generally relatively affordable and fast, but don't know how much more it would be than SAL small packet.

Alright credit card brothers, I made an order on Surugaya and intended to buy it with paypal and then proxy ship it by shipping it to Big in Japan. I had 18+ items in the order so paypal was locked out but credit card was available, so I picked that.

I can understand for preorders to an extent because maybe there just isn't a lot of information months out from release. That's even a bit silly when you think about it, though. A storefront that's been selling figures for years but can't work out a quick and dirty estimate based on historical trends? The only one that even seems to try is HobbySearch which provides a generic, rough chart. You don't have to stick to an estimate, it's an estimate. It's like knowing at the end of the meal you'll have to add roughly 15-20% for tip and a little more for tax.
For a proxy with the items already in hand it seems even odder. For ebay, the process usually takes me about a minute or two to toss everything in a box and run it by the kitchen scale/luggage scale/tape measure. Leave the box open for customers who want to consolidate their shipping and call it a day.I should clarify this is for over 15 items and changing the packing list after it's been packaged (apparently the only way to get an estimate) runs a $10 fee.

Normally they would mention the original sculpt/ manufacturer and then call it a "china version" or "manufactured in official factory" if it's a bootleg or if it's a defect sold at a loss. This is even more suspicious since they don't even indicate what it's supposed to be based on. They can send you basically anything that looks vaguely like the picture with no guarantees. Also, there's about a 99% chance it's not official.
Looking at the other items listed and the feedback, it's pretty clear they sell bootlegs. I've always sorta wanted to buy to see how bad they can get and whether they can be salvaged. That or they'd be a cheaper way to melt down figures into postmodern works of art.

Yeah, I lived there for a year doing JET, and can confirm that it's stupidly fun to shop for doujinshi and figures in person. Only problem is, if you don't know the obscure organization of the store (and, honestly, I could never figure out how to find anything in the bigger Mandarake locations), it can be hard to find exactly what you are looking for, in terms of books or any other goods. Hence, even though I lived there and would make regular trips to the Kokura Mandarake (much smaller store, at least before they recently moved), I still ordered most of my doujinshi through their website. Mail order is great when you live there. I got the majority of my orders the next day, lots of Sunday deliveries, and even a couple of orders showed up on the same exact day I ordered them - you really don't know the joy of mail order until you get something delivered later the same day you place the order.
Anyway, I thought that Tora no Ana didn't ship anything to gaikoku.

I've been to most Mandarakes, the organization is always by circle name. Then usually they have a section organized by show name, which tends to be the books for the show that weren't by a big name circle. In some stores those sections are separate, but Mandarake tend to mix them together, but the name tags on the shelves are color coded. If I remember correctly yellow is circle name and white is show name.
For the big shows they sometimes split by character or pairing too.

I live 1300 miles away from my parents and I still have nightmares of surprise visits. When they do come out to visit, I make sure to completely box up and hide all my anime goods in boxes behind boxes that are themselves already obscured by other boxes.

I came to the conclusion that if you don't get to visit the comiket, the easiest way to get the doujins you want is not going to stores in big cities and concentrate in towns like in Aru-Aru City (Kitakyushu).
