We still don't even know what went down in the tunnel exactly besides Maimai seeing a giant Kayama. The giant Kayama not attacking her doesn't necessarily indicate that the illusion won't attack somebody in a group.
On the other hand, Maimai still harbors feelings for Kayama despite being hurt by his rejection. That conflict between longing for him and being angry at what he did would explain why her illusion was distorted in a scary way, but not hostile. It makes more sense when you compare it alongside other illusions.
For instance, the Driver's daughter has a totally normal appearance and isn't hostile in the least. Driver wants his daughter back more than anything and obviously would never harbor ill will toward her.
On the other side of the spectrum, you have Mikage, whose illusion was warped and extremely hostile. His trauma is not one he wants to revisit, as we can tell by his overreaction to Hellfire having a harmless giggle at his expense.

The monster appearance, and its decision to whether attack or not is based on how the character feels about their trauma
the more it hurt the char in the past, the more it will be angry and want to hurt the char more, and the bigger it will be

I didn't expect Jack to be my favorite Mayoiga when I picked up the series. My initial reaction to him was vague amusement, and then episode 3 came along and blindsided me. Pic related was pretty much the exact moment he stole my heart.
Lovepon's development didn't necessarily surprise me, but it did take a direction that I think was less than ideal. I initially thought she was going to be my favorite, but she ended up being a little too over the top for my tastes. I still like her well enough, but she wasn't who I hoped she'd be.
I was also really intrigued by Mitsumune from the start (it was that fucking remark to Lion about cannibalism, it was just too much). That interest waned a bit from episodes 2 - 4, but 5 brought it back a lot stronger. Can't wait to see how far his limits truly go - and how hard he'll pop off once he can't take it anymore.

We have known from episode 4 (or even 3) that illusions, be they strictly audio or audiovisual, are both unique and exclusive to the person experiencing them. There are no shared illusions, or Masaki would've seen what Yottsun got annoyed about and Hellfire would've heard the bees. Shit, if illusions were shared, there would be no discrepancy between what everyone hears when the "bear" makes its sound.
Anything that multiple people have witnessed in the same way can be ruled out as an illusion. This means Jack, Yottsun, and the various oddities like the 8 tree are all real.

It's surprising that people think nothing really happened in episode 6, or that the plot didn't move at all. It clarified some key points regarding the nature of illusions, and the illusions are one of the main facets of the mystery.
Now that we know illusions aren't shared, we can assume a number of things (for the time being, anyway). First, we can assume that Yottsun and Jack's appearances were both genuine, with multiple people being able to see them both.
Second, we can assume that the illusions are entirely separate from the physical phenomena that have been observed in the village, such as the discrepancy between the buildings and the crops, the claw marks, the 8 tree etc. This likely confirms a theory going around in these threads that there is more than one force at work here in Nanaki, and that some of these mysteries may not have supernatural causes at all.
The illusions being exclusive to a person and their trauma also lends a lot of credence to Masaki's statement regarding Yottsun. He saw something (or someone, since the "iru" at the end of his sentence apparently implies a person) that she couldn't see, ran off to confront it, and left her there. She's still keeping mum about what really happened to her, but it's likely that she's telling the truth about Yottsun.
The episode also filled us in on why Koharun said she has a hunch about Masaki in episode 5, but it's still unclear how old the missing persons article is. Whether this is a translation error or something actually being withheld for now, I'm not sure.
TL;DR episode 6 was plot-relevant, not just character-relevant.

I think one of the remaining key questions about illusions is their purpose rather than their nature. What are they meant to invoke within the person? Why do some seem to lead their targets away from the village while some seem to chase them back toward it? Why do some manifest in horrific ways while some others manifest normally?
One possible answer is that the illusion manifests according to how the person feels about their trauma. Driver obviously would do anything to have his daughter back, and she looked perfectly normal. Yottsun was ticked off, but whatever he saw seemed familiar enough - perhaps it was someone he wants to resolve things with even if he's angry at them? Maimai saw a giant Kayama, which is bizarre in one way, but obviously he was recognizable enough. Could that indicate mixed feelings on her end? That maybe she isn't ready to confront him just yet, but she misses him all the same?
If this is the case, then a trauma that a person doesn't want to revisit or reconcile with will manifest in a horrific way. Mikage, Lovepon, and Mitsumune would be the strongest indicators of this. Lovepon is still hung up on the notion of punishment for wrongdoings, Mikage obviously doesn't want to be reminded of his failure, and Mitsumune has been said to be bottling things up from the very start. Hellfire is a little harder to account for because the tour can be seen as an alternate means of living out his desire for survival, but on the other hand, he'd never have done it if his height hadn't prevented him from pursuing his dream career.

The driver told everybody what happened to his family. He doesn't try to block it out or bottle it up. That's why his daughter wasn't a monster chasing him. My guess is that the others need to openly confront their fears as well in order to get rid of the monsters.
