Some characters are just really tan like the girl in the OP, while others I'm not sure. I don't think facial features are a good way of telling what race a brown character is, because most characters that are meant to be attractive, cute, and likeable look like the rest of the "normal" Japanese characters (big eyes, small nose, v-shapd jaw). I don't really think it matters though. It's all 2D and 3DPD will never look like this no matter what race they are.

The problem with race in anime is the fact that Japan isn't a racially focused country to begin with. It's an extremely homogeneous nation, in which nationality is more of a focus than race. Look up any anime character and I guarantee their race isn't on there. They're just brown or pale with no real distinctions between the two categories. Of course you do have some anime in which a black character is heavily distinguishable due to they're features, but you can't use that as a justification where unless they do have stereotypical features, than they aren't a certain race. That's the entire definition of stereotypes, it's not a fact. Whose to say what the hell their race is anyway? The author usually never states it, so if a character is brown they have just as much as a chance to be black as they do Hispanic or south east Asian. The problem is /a/ tries to incorporate they're own racial prejudices into a medium that couldn't care less what a character is. Race has never been a key aspect in anime, and why would it be? You have characters that don't make any sense physically to begin with, and why would an author take the time to define a characters race when they aren't even going to act any differently? In order to hold they're own racial superiority most people are going to come up with any excuse to denounce the possibility that a brown character could be black, hence them stating they're Okinawan or hispanic. Or you get an even better answer in which a dark skinned character is said to be tanned, when A) That's not how tanning works B) They're dark C) Anime pretty clearly shows you if they are tanned by their tan lines. In reality, authors rarely distinguish race because they simply don't care. Race never was, and isn't currently a focus in anime so why are we so worried about it?
