It still took years for the BETA to overrun all of Europe after the DDR collapsed. They didn't reach the Pyrenees until 1987.
>>
>>140813576
But I'd expect that with all of Murica's support they could hold the Rhine and Alps nigh indefinitely unless a new BETA type showed up, those are major natural obstacles that have been great defensive positions for all of human history. The Odel whatever line didn't follow any natural defense as far as I can tell and still held for that long.

If they're miners, they're probably attracted by the stuff under the alps. Probably the same reason they advanced first into Afghanistan of all places.

Also, posting best scan of best girl.
>>
>>140813639

The Alps, probably. I'm not sure why the Rhine is significant here - it would have the same level of natural defense as the ON Line, which follows the Neisse river in the south and the Oder from where they join to the Baltic.

That said, you might be able to hold the Alps/Pyrenees, but what would be the benefit? Rome is gone isn't coming back, and Spain hasn't been cool for years. Neither region has massive reserves of natural resources or enormous industrial output, and holding the line would still not be cheep, in blood or iron.

Conversely, the English Channel and the Mediterranean do provide effective barriers by sheer size - the BETA were able to invade Kent across the Strait of Dover, but were repelled after six months and never made another successful assault, and they never got a solid foothold in North Africa and nothing there that might have been destroyed in a failed assault. The fact that you can use naval forces, impose attrition as they're crossing under the ocean, and can't use their lasers until they get to shore. Both provide massive force multiplies, and offensive culling raids give you the tactical initiative, preventing the BETA from massing as effectively.

Both of those are minor compared to the Rhine and the Alps.

>shit people were being fed in the DDR so obviously it hadn't gone to complete shit yet

The DDR wasn't at all in good shape, materially speaking.

Note that in the 3-4 month run of SM, the 666th TSF squadron, ostensibly their best unit, was never once at full strength. In January of '83 they stated the first battle in ep. 1 with nine pilots (75% of nominal), lost one and gained one, but received no reinforcements in the months leading up to Operation Neptune in March.

Then, there are a bunch of little things; the fact that they're deploying Infantry, the equipment of that infantry, the fact that they can't mass enough tubes to simply blow the lasers away, and so forth.

It's an attrition war, and the way those tend to look is pretty evenly matched until one side runs out of ammo or implodes. I wouldn't expect that nutrition would be a rampant problem; it's not directly competing with military heavy industry. It's also not unreasonable that various NGOs would provide food aid even if the Western Governments weren't giving official support.

>without any foothold

Don't forget that TSFs can fly. The fact that you can deploy combat power by moving one of those transport ships near the coast changes quite a bit. The EU routinely makes culling incursions into Europe out of England/Corsica/Wherever.

Also consider that in 1985 they really weren't in any condition to retake Europe, and if they did they'd be no better off when it came to holding it, so trying to maintain a toehold for something that's at least ten years out would be questionable at best.

SM era or present day? Probably wouldn't change too much from FRG's present day one. Well, maybe even more "aristocratic" elements, more intimidating perhaps. The SM era stuff probably wouldn't be colored dark blue with green highlights. Maybe Iron Cross symbols on their sort of crotch area like other suits seemingly have symbols there?

The real question is, what would Germany's client states wear it like? Especially as they are on the Kingdom of France's land, but there's old Commune of France leanings here and there.

Sylwia would probably be majestic this time around.

Pretty much.

Beatrix's plan is one of the worst plans ever devise in ML and is something only a diseased, monstrous mind could come up with.

Axmann was pretty greedy. We don't know what he would've done had he attained power. He probably would've lived it up like a hedonistic bastard as he whored himself to the West. The DDR would still be better off than under Beatrix.

Iris was a nationalist, so she would've done everything possible to preserve the DDR. Her plan for gradual withdrawal was pretty good except that it denied help from the West.

Katia's plan was the best, and it's shown that under her Europe and the DDR achieved the best possible outcome given their shit situation.
>>
>>140815042
The Pickelhaube was already being slated for retirement before WWI broke out. The Stalhelm of WWII iconic imagery was actually latter day WWI, both for Germany and Austria-Hungary.

It's good perhaps the Stalhelm ended when it did. You know those ugly ass helmets that the East German army wore? Those were designed in WWII, and the commies simply repurposed. It actually formed quite a bit of the GDR's mythos building and attempts at claiming legitimacy. Basically, they claimed they were the "true" Germany, successor of the old era - when of course they weren't vociferously accusing Bonn of being the Nazi remnant.
>>

I guess since all of them except maybe Switzerland would be in about the same situation in terms of territory, then probably. Obviously with different symbols and maybe with some color changes.
>>
>>140815416
I'm confident that the thing about Katia's plan was that Katia alone could make it work, she had incredible charisma from the '''feats''' implied in-story.
>>
>>140815416
>was pretty good except that it denied help from the West.

It did? I thought here plan involved opening negotiations for war support from the West (which by itself would have done more good than any amount of manpower Beatrix could have raised) but Katia was the only one who was open to reunification.

But then, I could be wrong.
>>

Well, considering how the Second Weltkrieg usually goes in Kaiserreich, the core enemies of Germany are always the Commune of France, southern Italy, and (nearly always) the Union of Britain, so France would definitely either be under the client kingdom, or split up into core France and Normany and Brittany. Very rarely do they balkanize France completely, or invite Napoleon over from National France. Ukraine has a decently high chance of syndie revolution, and Dutch CAN have it.

Mitteleuropa at start usually has Germany as it's core, the Baltics, Denmark (because UoB often declares war on them), Ukraine, Belarus and Belgium. They often get Poland (or rather Poland-Lithuania forms and chooses Mindagaaus as king) into their camp, so there's Sylwia.

Austria isn't in Mitteleuropa, and depending on how the Augsliech of 1937 goes, the civil war (that usually happens) eithers wrecks their shit in for good and the empire completely collapses, they are able to salvage some remnants, or somewhat rarely, they completely unite after and recreate the Danubian Federation.

Ottoman Empire usually collapses because they're beyond the sick man of Europe now, more like the terminally ill man of Europe.

Other variables are too freeform from one game to the next though. So that's the core bloc of Mitteleuropa vs the Internationale, but obviously it can change highly.
>>
>>140815695

It may have been that, because of her youthful nativity, she approached the situation without the biases that everyone else took as a given and thus was able to concoct a plan that was actually more rational that the others.

If someone had commented or mused something to that effect in the story, it might have made it easier for a lot of people to reconcile the plan with the character.

But it only manages to do that by limiting consideration to avoid the the burdens on the larger plan.

But in doing so, it also forfeits the moral license provided by Preventing The Extinction Of The Species. Beatrix's insurrection and the Counterrevolutionaries can claim to be killing for the sake of some worthwhile good, but at that point, Lise is only killing for personal benefit.

Killing people is always a means to an end - Hitler started the Holocaust because he needed a convenient scapegoat, Stalin did it to root out dissent and what he saw as a fermenting rebellion, and Mao started the Cultural Revolution trying to root out 'degeneracy'. Nobody kills people because they feel like it at first because that's not even idiotic for a leader, it's insane, and genuinely insane people don't get any support.
>Even an idiot could tell that it wouldn't help anyone
No you couldn't. Her entire plan amounted to sacrificing one country to buy time. She was blinded by her hatred for, well, everything, but it was actually highly rational if you ignored the glaring hole which is the fact that Katia somehow got a lot of people out of the way in a much shorter time.
>sadistic
Blatantly incorrect.
>actually hurt humanity
This is only true if you take the fact that Katia succeeded somehow as a given. It obviously isn't since nobody did it before her if it was so obvious and easy. It's the classic 'sacrifice a hundred to save a thousand', except this is 'sacrifice an entire country to save the rest of the continent'.
Goddamnit man, I'm not even a Beatofag I'm your rare Katiafag but this is beyond idiotic. Did you only watch the anime?

No it wasn't.

>Hamburg to England is about 350 miles. If we assume a large cargo vessel can maintain a speed of 22 knots more or less forever (they can, and fuel is loaded while people are boarding), then the Large Cargo Vessel needs just under sixteen hours to move a load of people to England.

>Now, a small-to-medium-sized cargo vessel can carry 5,000 containers. Human smugglers have fit 35 in one. This is an abstraction; we'll round down to 25 for margin.

>5000*25 = 125000 people per boat-trip = 496 boat-trips to evac 62 million people, 500 bt for margin, assuming no Post-panamax ships.

>The Port Of Hamburg maintains about 38 dedicated heavy cargo berths, along with 300-odd smaller and other-focused berths. We'll assume Total Mobilization and round up to 50 equivalents.

>Loading and unloading time for large cargo ships is apparently a MUCH more complicated topic, but based on some numbers for a ship of slightly more than twice our reference size at a number of ports with literately anything you might imagine as cargo, 12.5 hours seems about 'typical' for a ship of that size. Our reference vessel is much smaller and people are lighter than iron ore, though, so we'll say 8 hours on either end for loading and unloading.

>This means one boat can complete one trip in 32 hours, or 1.5 days, and Hamburg can launch up to 150 Boat-trips a day. Referencing Bake the Ememies, the Based Pit Masters were in Hamburg for one week before the BETA showed up. Assuming at least one week was therefor available for evacuation, Hamburg could launch more than 700 boat-trips in that time, and only 100 ships would be needed to move everyone in that time frame.

>The fact that they didn't can be chalked up to panic-induced inefficiency, but we know the Pit Masters held at least until every Refugee Ship had launched, so it would be conceivable that the U.S. Army 54th Attack Squadron covered for the ENTIRE German population during the Defense Of Hamburg.

England to Hamburg distance
Cargo ship speed
Capacity of a cargo ship
People per TEU
Port of Hamburg capacity
Ship loading time

>None of that was very difficult to find, really.

>It's canon that the evacuation went fairly well; because they were, you know, planning for it, and it wasn't an overnight thing.

>My calculation is intended to illustrate that their is no physical limit on them evacuating 62 million people; which there isn't, even with the 'friction' factors involved.

>Beatrix's plan would only have been throwing away human capital for no real strategic gain.

>Exactly. Just like every other successful mass evacuation in history.

>If you actually expect that something like that would go smoothly, you're an idiot. The point was that it was better than every other BETA evacuation, and managed to by and large work out.

>Think of it this way; they were evacuating from Hamburg, NOT Le Havre or Brest. The fact that they were able to continuously conduct evacuations over a period of weeks means that while it was not a neat process, it was still strategic withdrawal in good order, as opposed to a rout. If the BETA were advancing uncontrolled, the people would have either died or kept running west, which didn't happen.

>If the evacuation had actually been going poorly, the whole country would have turned into Somalia (ref. Syliva's Backstory Events) rather than having isolated outbreaks of social disorder.

>General order was maintained, and there was more than sufficient time and infrastructure to move everyone. Further, the EU actually exists as a supranational entity. If the withdrawal had gone as poorly as you'd have liked, it would be The British Empire.

Beatrix looks around the living room. She knows Theo is behaving himself at this point partially out of the shock that comes from arriving on the mattress. He is still very weak, physically. Also, he's not going to embarass himself in front of the parents he has probably longed to see for years before arriving here this morning. Still, she is aware of the fact that Axmann poisoned his mind, and shifted the blame for what happened to Lise squarely on her own shoulders. That was a problem to broach on a different day, once everything managed to calm down a little bit.

"Well, it's been wonderful, but, we really must be going."

She says so with an edge to the otherwise sweet voice that says that this is a command that is not to be questioned, nor its execution to be delayed in any way. She, Jurgen, and the Baby abruptly disappear. You look at your phone. Iris is getting off work at noon, having been in the bowels of retail hell since 3:30 that morning, but she luckily only has to work eight hours today, since it is Christmas Eve after all. She suggests meeting in the town center, where a large non-denominational winter holiday tree has been placed in front of the library. That sounds like a pretty good plan to you. The sooner you can get out of this situation, the better. It's still on the group text line, and Walther, Sylvia, Inghild and Marco have all already agreed to be there. You brief Lise and Pham on the plan. You hand the keys to the Camry to Lise, and ride with Pham and Farka into town, to walk around enjoying the season until it is time to meet with the other alumni of the 666th Tactical Surface Fighter Squadron.

As you drive, you discuss the situation with Pham.

"So what do we do?"

She turns to you and smiles, "Operation Irisdina."

You're in the back seat of Pham's car, leaning between the two front seats to converse with the girl driving.

"So you're saying that we should try and hook Theo up with Iris to make sure he behaves himself? What will Iris say?"

Pham shrugs. "We're not just doing it for Theo. I know you don't really spend a whole lot of time with Iris, for obvious reasons, but she's basically been acting lonely and sexually frustrated the entire time we've been living together and it's maddening. It's gotten even worse since Oktoberfest. She's just been mopey. Thank goodness she's been pulling 80 hour workweeks since then, it means we don't have to be around for it. Did something happen while everyone was asleep?"

You open your mouth to reply, then catch yourself, clamping it shut before you can say anything you shouldn't. Pham sees you in the rear-view mirror.

"That's exactly what I thought." Pham laughs. "She probably kissed Beatrix or something."

You almost want to ask how she knows, but if you do that, it's the same as telling her it happened yourself. Pham continues, "Look, if we can make sure that Theo and Iris fall in love with each other, it kills two birds with one stone."

Farka laughs nervously, "I just don't want to get stabbed again. I think maybe you and Lise pushed him too hard. You two are kind of scary when you're focused on the same thing."

"Maybe you're right." You shrug. "I guess I got a little bit too caught up in everything."

You arrive at the town center, or, as close as you're going to get to it and still find parking. You meet up with the others in the Camry. Theo is a little sullen, of course, but going off Lise's parents behavior, it seems as though the drive went smoothly. The sidewalks are clear, but there is snow on the ground, and even though it's noon, the sky is dark. Luckily, the town is lit up by red and green lights, and as you move into the crowd, the festive atmosphere manages to lift even Theo's spirits.

Feminism would tear itself apart if subjected to the level of stress in ML. On the flipside, the high number of females being drafted might keep it around, just in a different form.

Less then conventional firebombs or napalm.
>>
>>140818007

>>
>>140817819
That was back in the day anon. we're talking modern times when people will gladly trow their lives away toiling for corporate shitbags in the hopes of becoming a shitbag themselves rather than having kids.

I can see the government offering some form of incentive to have children in the form of monetary compensation, or by being dicks about it (IE outlawing birth control)

That opens up another can of worms now that I think about it, abortion is probably illegal all over the world in Muv Luv, seeing as we still need canon fodder and "Teh survival of the human race" and all that jazz.

>>140818083
Considering that the majority of the young women and men get drafted, how does the ML world react to half their female soldiers getting knocked up due to a combination of societal pressures, fuck of fly response, hormonal men and women sharing living quarters (many are teenagers, after all), and so forth.
>>
>>140818070
How could it be wrong anon? A single nuclear bomb could do the same job that several b-52 bomb loads of napalm could do.

And yes im counting by the number but it would still demand a large number of nuclear bombs in maybe megaton level of destruction at the same area aiming for high population centers and hoping the fires dont get put out by the shockwave
>>
>>140818209
I think Meiya covers the topic in Unlimited. They force soldiers to take birth control, so no babies for them.
>>
>>140818216
That's what I'm saying, you can't just count them by number that's ridiculous.
Also, you can probably just drop some huge ones in an empty field and hope it kicks up enough dust. Even medium meteor impacts can cause nuclear winter on steroids after all.

You usually dont give a fuck or have energy left to bang a girl after doing soldier things anon. You just want to get some sleep.

And you might consider her to be your sister and so on

But to be honest here, woman are not that good soldiers due to how nature have made them. They may be great in support role (which they have) but in active frontline combat units? Not that much.

I think Japan is somewhat unique in its situation with demographics - remember, the game is set three years after the disastrous initial invasion and the country hasn't had much chance to recover. The high number of cute girls we see in combat outfits in other locations/times would suggest otherwise, but I highly doubt that any country that could avoid it would have a universal age-16 draft for multiple decades.

Also, where the hell would they get enough robots?

Not everyone is a TSF pilot.

Only special snowflakes.

And you still need to do soldier things and basic training, in reality most woman would get outperformed by their fellow male soldiers and considering how the TSF pilots dont wear exoskeletons 24/7 then it is a big thing when outside the TSF

And then again, commanders would prefer to deploy more male soldiers then female soldiers due to females being more important male ones.

You make it to the non-denominational winter holiday tree in the center of town, where Iris is waiting along with the others. Walther comes up to Theo and claps him on the back

"Well I'll Be! it looks like you're older than me now."

Theo shrugs, still being mopey, still being exhausted. As he looks up, however, his eyes catch Irisdina's eyes, at least eventually, and it seems as though a cloud has been liften off his shoulders.

"Iris! Thank goodness! You're alive!"

Lise pushes him in the square of the back, causing him to step forward toward Iris. He just manages to stop before bumping into Iris.

"Hug her, you fool!"

Lise is calling out orders to her brother. Theo and Iris eventually become aware of the fact that they are at the center of a ring, like a fight is about to break out, and everyone is staring at them with a look of expectation. Eventually, the give in to the pressure of the crowd, awkwardly wrapping their arms around one another and then melting into each other as they start to become more aware of what they are doing.

"Can you believe this jerk? He wakes up next to his precious younger sister, who he hasn't seen in years, and immeiately asks to see Irisdina Bernhard."

"Yeah, but I mean, aren't you getting married to someone else?" Walther replies.

"That's not the point, I wanted to be the one to reject him, not the other way around."

"Um, I think you did that." Farka chimes in.

It's only been a few hours, but it already seems the trauma of the morning has grown into something of a joke. Thankfully, Theo and Irisdina aren't aware of that right now. In this moment, all they see is each other. You suspect that Lise feels a little bit bad about what happened earlier, despite her disappointment. To be perfectly honest, you owe Theo a big one for not wanting to encroach on your own relationship. You turn to Pham, who is smiling happily.

"I guess Operation Irisdina was a success."

"So far, it looks that way, doesn't it?"

If you are going to change things, at least keep it consistent. The portrayal and tone the anime took towards Beatrix and Lise changed so much between episodes that it seemed almost schizophrenic. One episode tries to make them sympathetic or look like they have depth, the next shows them to be flat psychos who are doing shit for their own enjoyment. Watanabe's such a fucking hack.

That's a bad example. You're only looking at it from Lise's angle, where she went completely mental.

Theo also has his complications with her. She literally JUST murdered Pham, and Theo was trying to kill her, when he suddenly realized he couldn't do it. He loved her too much.

It's not that either projected some exemplarary version of them onto their present selves, it's that they have this mad desperation not to lose each other one more time, and try to get the other in their incompatible dreams.
