What was wrong with Danganronpa: The Animation?

Easy answer is that it only had 13 episodes, amd had to blast through the story to do it.
Harder answer would be that it couldn't replicate the game properly. A big part of the game was giving the player choice in who they talked to and got to know. This let the player selectively gravitate towards characters they liked, and could worry about their fate. Seeing a character you invested your time and emotional energy into be killed, be tuebkiller (and then killed), or survive each chapter helped let the player decide who to worry about, and made the stakes more personal to them.
The anime didn't have this, and by its nature couldn't let viewers take extra time to connect with a specific character of their choosing, so there wasn't as strong of a connection and investment in seeing your favorites live or die.
Everything but this.

I can tell you haven't watched or played it because the gore is honestly pretty scarce, and the blood is like a light pink anyways for some reason

The blood color was to avoid CERO (nip ESRB/PEGI) giving Danganronpa a high age rating (It's the same reason why the nip release of MGR Revengeance has white blood instead of red)
The nips who played the game liked it and felt it fit the game's mood, so it stuck as a signature of the franchise

It's not the "mature" content that makes people like it, otherwise there would be way better games to play (Corpse Party being the obvious one). The game has basically no gore and the blood is NEON PINK, the antagonist is controlling a robotic bear and it consists of satirical stereotypical character types it isn't at all about maturity. It's just a good game story. Unfortunately this isn't a possible in an anime since the story line must be linear and the Danganronpa story isn't massive enough to expand much greater than 13 episodes. But the anime did do it's job at attracting attention to the game series before the PS Vita remastered version.
