I set it to 35 new cards a day and unlimited reviews (999). Studied for 19 days
I can keep up with it for the most part, except those mentioned. Its easier than when I studied English because Japanese is pretty similar to my native language which is Vietnamese (they both originated from Chinese)
>>
>>140616332
>not vertical text

Gross
>>
>>140616891
Why do you think that?
>>
>>140617012
For one-three liners like in VNs, horizontal is fine, but, for large bodies of text, Japanese is more aesthetically pleasing in vertical form.
>>
>>140617232
>meikyuu.exe

Pretty sure that is a VN, bub.
>>
>>140616507
>unlimited reviews (999).
That's not unlimited.

>>140616268
I change what I do depending on what my motivation is and how much time I have. Today I did 25 new cards. Yesterday 50. The day before 25 and the day before 0. Sometimes I don't do new cards for some days and then I do 100 (mining). Just do what you think works best for you.
Started really like 8 months really again and on new year I restarted Anki for some reasons. Got 1200 mature and 1900 young but some of the cards I learned before I didn't l didn't unsuspend yet because I'm most of the time mining stuff.
Settings: New cards 1 2 7 30 45 300 180, order is random, starting ease 220%, max rev/day 9999, easy bonus 150%, interval mod 60%, mark only[/blog]
Anyone else changed his interval mod?
>>
>>140616507
>>140617291
Meant 9999, missing a 9
>>
>>140617232
Nonetheless, Japanese themselves are fine with large blocks of horisontal text.

How can you remember 35 or more cards for a day?
If it set anything higher than 30 I end up rushing to clear my deck as soon as possible..
What is your trick?
>>
>>140617492
I do 50 new cards a day. I do them in intervals, so I'll study for 10-15 minutes or however long I feel like before retiring cards for the day, take a break for some amount of time, then come back and see how well I remember what I've already looked through and continue the cycle
>>
>>140617492
I can translate words made up of Kanji character into Chinese and then into Vietnamese, and a lot of them will still make sense, so it's easier for me, Don't know about others though
>>
>>140617492
I do the same as >>140617626
I also do reviews for 15-20 minutes. After 20 I start to lose focus so I make a break and then continue. In the evening I do reviews for 5-10 minutes. Morning works better for me. Also when I do a lot of reviews like mining 100 cards I write them down an review them. I did like 500~ cards in a week some weeks ago and wrote each one at this time on a paper with translation and read them when I had time. Like a book. When I would finish I'd start again.
But I also do sometimes for some days only 10 words a day. If you don't feel like doing much, do less.
>>140617645
I also look up every word before in Jisho or some other dictionary and then translate it into my language. I don't live in my homecountry but it's still easier to memorize words in one's native language I think

Seems like it depends. That someone felt they had to ask the question to begin with is perhaps evidence that natives don't care much.
>>

http://d.hatena.ne.jp/sfujikazu/touch/20100907/1283827468

Vertical text is easier to read for Japanese.

I don't really feel the need to. I don't mind if people disagree. I just wanted to point out the two links you provided are not really substantial or notable evidence. If you want to prove it, which you seem to, you'll have to do better than that.
>>
>>140620743
>I don't really feel the need to

Neither do I. Vertical text being easier to read than horizontal text if only because a page of vertical text contains less text than a page of horizontal text is enough evidence. Furthermore, every single article I've read so far about horizontal vs vertical text has stated that reading vertical text feels more natural for native readers than reading horizontal text, be it because of early manga influences in life, the fact that the vast majority of manga and novels are printed with vertical text or any other reasons.

The only exception to this are otaku who spend more time on the Internet where text is displayed horizontally.

Well, posting sources to try and prove it doesn't really give off that impression.
And, the fact you continue to give meaningless anecdotal evidence from largely outsources, unscientific articles on the internet, even after having their irrelevance pointed out, is a bit perplexing.
If you want to prove it, or have someone like me, agree, then provide a scientific sourced article. If you don't want to prove it, then why keep posting? If you reply again just to argue with me and not to provide any sources I'm going to ignore you.

Can someone help me figure the sentence below?

> あんだけ女とっかえひっかえしてたクセに急に純愛ぶって
I have no clue what 女とっかえひっかえしてた is.

And the tiny part in the last panel:
> アイツのまわり
> ビッ4ばっかり (???)
> だしー

The context is that there's a guy who used to hang around women a lot (or women hanged around him) and he suddenly stopped because of light-hair character in the pic.

Learned the kana over five years ago and didn't do anything with it. Around two years ago I had a crack at "proper study", which involved home made paper flash cards, huge amounts of drilling shit which I ended up forgetting within a few days, and basically a lot of looking for resources from the local public library due to not having an Internet connection at the time. That was a miserable failure and I ended up putting it aside entirely in favour of other things at the time.
Around six months ago I picked it back up, this time with an Internet connection and collected everything I needed and ended up spending nearly two months just reading about learning without acting starting. Massive procrastination problem, spent more time lurking these threads than anything else. New exactly what I had to do, even had it all planned out but didn't start.
It has taken the remainder of those two months up until 7/8 days ago to push myself to start. That's how bad I am with procrastination.

Pic related is at least for myself a representation of the start of progress and routine which has been missing from my life for over a decade. I want this post to serve as a starting point for a series of updates over the next two years, at intervals of next week, next month, the next three months, the next six months, etc. and to show myself and others that even if you are a completely useless fuck with no history of success or achievement, that you can do something long term and that you can learn Japanese.
A real sense of desperation is much more powerful than fleeting motivation.
>>
>>140621970

Recognition will give you faster progress, production will ingrain the card into your mind stronger. I say go recognition because you'll be reinforcing what you see through reading to the point that you'll be able to produce visually and verbally eventually, but it really comes down to what works for you.

Also, if you want to be able to write, go for production but make sure that you learn stroke order using Jisho or something.

I'm a Russian minor, but next semester I'm taking a Beginning Japanese course as an elective before going on a family trip to Tokyo and Hiroshima the following summer.

What am I in for? I assume three's lots of reddit-tier weebs wearing Death Note and Hatsune Miku merch while quoting anime? Professors that want to kill themselves because of those very same students?

Also where should I begin, considering I've never looked into learning japanese at all before now?
>>
>>140636089

You will learn very little. Like, a phrase book and a few common words to form basic sentences. You won't be even less able to read the written language.

Japanese is very far removed from English which makes teaching in a non-intensive class almost pointless.

It's 5 days a week at my college and the only people I know who can speak decently after a couple years of the classes are the ones who already know Chinese.
Unlike most of this thread I don't actually think it's terrible to start out in a class, since the beginning is the most boring and it would make it more fun, plus you would have your teacher correcting your pronunciation to some extent. But if you want to get good you cannot rely on classes. You will eventually have to go much faster than your classes pace - enough to make classes a complete waste of time.

My goal isn't to get fluent right, at least right now, it's just to be able to even barely read/speak during our trip. I needed 3 more credit hours for my degree and I thought it'd be better to fill that gap with something useful rather than something retarded like Film Studies or whatever.
>>

In my Russian class, there were two Russian kids taking it, as well as a Russian-fluent Azerbijani guy. >>140636996

The advice is to not to expect to reach any level of competency from a class.

As >>140636949 mentioned. It's an introduction, at best.

Predictions for time to fluency are several thousand hours of efficient study.

By comparison, European languages will take a few hundred hours.

4 year universities are shit as well.

There's an easy way to tell if your college has worthwhile language classes, and that is if the class is taught entirely in the foreign language (after the first year or so)
The answer is no for most 4 year universities.

>>
>>140641221
> However, there's better resources and opportunities at these top schools
See >>140640344
Top tier colleges are better at more things, but there will be things they are not better at. This is especially true for grad school where faculty positions are hard to get so every department will have a couple of geniuses. That's my main point, which is why saying "top tier schools will have X" is silly. You could easily end up excluding something like MIT just because it doesn't focus on whatever intensive liberal arts thing you deem top schools should have.
>>
>>140641401

Not sure what you mean by "intensive liberal arts thing". LACs (think Williams, Middlebury, Amherst) are liberal arts colleges.

MIT is actually excellent in the liberal arts, especially in language study (I have a couple of friends attending).

Of course no institution can have it all. But the general trend is these colleges have the prestige and funding to attract the better professors and students (which affects your classroom experience). That's why all I said was "As far as I know, language instruction is excellent at the top tier universities and LACs".

This isn't necessarily true. I studied a language for 2.5 years at a top 5 school and learned at a terrible rate compared to self-studying Japanese with DJT.
>>
>>140642995
Any class is going to be slow compared to what you are capable of doing yourself because classes are supposed to be 1/4 of your coursework each plus leaving you with some free time.
>>
>>140642995

You need to supplement language study yourself as well. You still probably received better instruction in that language compared to "worse" schools (don't like to put it that way, but whatever).

Some of the Japanese majors at my school (top 15) leave at the N3 level, whereas some are N1 and good enough to land jobs in Tokyo.
>>
>>140643251
we should have a djt party in tokyo once everyone gets there
>>
>>140643300

>>
>>140642995
The only level worth taking at my school was the highest, which required a placement exam and was designed to be impossible without some degree of past or accelerated self-study. You couldn't enter it by starting from 101.

I didn't get placed in it due to my shitty speaking skills from self-studying and ended up taking the typical senior-level course which was pretty much a waste of time, even though it was in japanese. Too much time wasted on stupid questions and catering to the slowest students.
