If it was Kubo or someone it would just be lazy, but with Ai Ren artist we know he's trying to be artistic and shit here, conveying the feeling of being blind and stuck in rubble, without anyone with you in the last moments dying alone and without meaning.
You saw his mind slowly deteriorate and go into different stages throughout the chapter. Its one of the most hopeless feelings even more painful than Ai's death, but there was also a bit of hope to be found.
Final moments he started to hear Ai again
Also there's no sadism in this story
its bitter-sweet
Its painful, its hopeful, its not just masturbation to pain, rather its always pain with meaning.

That's the good part though, its one of the only stories that can make you feel human again no matter how long its been.
Its not like an NTR story or suffering porn where its nothing but pain and despair for the sake of it without meaning. Rather Ai Ren is a story that makes you reevaluate your life, buy a van, and travel around the country. Its because the entire point is that you only have so long to live, so they chose to be happy at the end, no matter how it turned out.
In one year they lived more than you probably ever could. They carried death with them the entire time, more pain with others, but those days were just of a normal life.

I started by watching the show so let me just say, the manga is MUCH better, tone-wise. Not that the show doesn't have appeal too, but the Show focuses WAY more on the girls being cute and moe and even rewriting or adding scenes.

He's wounded and unable to escape as a nuke is about to go off. Because he can't escape he decides to watch an email'ed video from his classmates which he refused to watch because he thought they would curse him out for getting them all into danger and have Chidori kidnapped- (which is how they treated him when he left)
since there was nothing left but to wait for death he decided to watch it, only for the video to be all his classmates taking some time talking about how much they missed him and Chidori and wish he could come back with her and graduate with the class. It's a 45 minute long video, and he had only watched 10 minutes as the nuke is about to go off and just straight up loses his shit.
It's a rather heartbreaking bitter sweet scene, as he had lived such a shit life and went through hell to save the girl he loved only for him to not be able to return from that.
