You've been watching Higurashi for the last 10 years?

As much as Utawarerumono, Haruhi and NHK no Youkoso.

And they have downtime where they spend 4+ hours after they're finished mindlessly browsing the internet doing nothing. That's the same shitty excuse that people give when they say they don't read in general. Spending an hour max a day reading isn't hard.

>>140520228
It's cause unlike Higurashi, Umineko really was made to the a work of literature. It was specifically made to be something you could read rather than watch. That said they could have done a better job on the anime.
>>140521471
Well if the VN has a decent manga adaptation or a decent looking anime you can just check out a few screen shots from the manga or some well animated scenes from the anime, and see if those seem interesting enough to check the VN out. If the anime looks halfway decent, even if it's a shit adaptation , then the visuals can at least draw you in. Higurashi has a pretty okay looking anime, so that works.
Sadly Umineko's animation isn't even pretty to look at and looks like dogshit. The manga has some pretty good visuals though, so somebody could just post screen shots of the manga to garner interest.

Man, there's something about Higurashi and Umineko, and any of Ryukishi's work specifically that really just stuck with me. It's one of the few weebshit-related things that I still think about years after I finished reading them, moreso than anything else. There's a certain charm to them that I can't seem to find anywhere else.
Does anybody feel similarly?
>>140550035
only bullies
>>140550172
Yes it is pretty unique even 10 years later, I guess it is because it manages to blend many genres and works that manage to do that always become classics at least to me
>>140550172
It's emotion. Whatever Ryukishi lacks in prose and repetitiveness, he makes up with it in emotion and reliability.
That part where Takano is running in the woods, alone, with nothing but the clothes on her back and the muddied worthless lifelong work of her grandfather. Hanyuu just asks her why did she do it? And Takano just answers that she wanted a place in the world where she could be wanted.
That came so much from the heart. You could just feel the emotion itself leap out of the story and touch you.
I love Ryukishi and all his work. They touch me like nothing else in fiction does. He hits all my fetishes, all my nihilism, my suffering, my emotions, my desires, my wish to be happy and my need to be loved.
He just has it all.
>>140550035

Looking back on it, one of the things I really liked about his work was how he could make you change the way you looked at a character, through things like showing their past and describing the situations that they were thrust in, and making formerly irredeemable characters more sympathetic and relatable.
Notable examples from umineko were Natsuhi and Eva.
Ham fists best fists
>>140519582
Not just the elevens. There's no satisfying way to resolve a premise like Higurashi. I don't think it's ever been done. The best way to go about is to explain as little of the "how" as you can get away with.
>>140550785
I honestly think it's the reason why Higurashi is liked more than Umineko. Every new episode, you found out more about a character and it changed everything you knew about them. I still find Higurashi absolutely brilliant that it's basically a harem story filled with obvious cliche characters with cliche archetypes. Dense boy goes to a new school and is surrounded by girls who all want to hang out around him. You got the tomboy, airhead genki girl, the silent loli and the bratty loli.
Then you get an episode to focus on each characters while advancing the plot more and more. They all have their problems, something they want or have lost, something that makes them flawed but still idealized in the only way anime can be.
That's why it's so great when the gang gets together in ep 8. It's so satisfying.
>Notable examples from umineko were Natsuhi and Eva.
You should add Kyrie to that list. She's the most misunderstood character in Umineko and everyone just sees her as this psychopathic murderer who can only think rationally who would femdom you. It's so sad people can't see her heart.
>>140550926
>There's no satisfying way to resolve a premise like Higurashi.

That scene is perfect
What's funny though is that I might've found a few of the lines and actions cheesy if I saw them in something else. But Higurashi makes it work perfectly fine. Probably because I genuinely care about the characters in this, unlike most other fiction.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuY_v9k9W0E&index=25&
>>140551263
It's because it destroys cynicism. Optimism, although weak, like friendship, will always defeat cynicism. This is why Higurashi works so well as a THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP story.
It's cliche as fuck but what actually makes it work is that Ryukishi brings down friendship to its most ugly truth; that it doesn't exist, we don't really care about anyone and just want to have fun. Rena completely shits on everyone including herself. Mion did nothing to save Satoshi, Rika did nothing, Rena did nothing, Satoko did nothing and drove Satoshi into a deeper depression.
And then, a shining hope. A glimmer of light. Optimism. NO! It might be right but it's not correct. Cynicism is weak, the easy path! Optimism is truth. Friendship is strength!
It has to be corny but said with such passion to destroy cynicism.
I have this deep sadness where I secretly desire someone to shove a finger at my face and say NO, YOU'RE WRONG, BE HAPPY, BE OPTIMISTIC. And Higurashi is that. Ryukishi is that. And I fucking love it.
I guess the right word I'm trying to convey in my rambling is 'earned'. Higurashi earned its optimistic message and emotion because it overcame cynicism and that resonates more with people.
>>140551504
>>140551632
Well said anon. I can agree with that.
Someone in the comment sections in one of my videos pointed out that Higurashi is pretty much a shounen story. A damn good shounen. Maybe that's obvious to some but I honestly didn't start reading the VN with the idea that it would be that.
Anyway, regardless, I ended up loving it too.
>>140552463
Oh yeah, for sure. That's also one of the strengths of Ryukishi. He starts off with a very simple premise and ends up somewhere completely different. Higurashi starts as a typical SoL harem story, then goes into horror and mystery, only to come out full shonen.
Umineko is the same way.

No. No no no. No one deserves to die, your stay will not enhance the quality of the thread if someone died as each person contributes to the overall environment and joy. Singular joys and pleasures are not as enjoyable as varied joys.
The thread would not be better if people with Satoko as their daughteru vanished, nor if people who loved Rena went away. Each love enhances all other love until there is only the collective love for Higurashi in union.
Partial love can only give partial enjoyment. We must all love each other in our love.

Not always. Being too optimistic just sets you up for disappointment and, more often than not, blinds you from the truth. But if you don't have it, like love, it cannot be seen. It just feels better to be optimistic.

>>140566966

>>140567151
There's a balance of being optimistic and realistic, but also to take into account the possibility for things to go wrong. It wasn't cynicism or pessimism that helped Rika escape. It was my fault people started calling you Bernkastel. I apologize for that.

>>140568120

>>140562202
As I was reading the VN I wasn't even thinking of any characters in a sexual lightexcept Shion, that teasing personality, then I come in the threads and half of it consists of Anon's sexual fantasy blogs. As long as there are girls in a show people will jack off to it.
>>140568262
The unspoken rule is basically that the more you care about a character, the less you can see them in a sexualizing way. It's the main reason most waifufags cannot view their waifu sexualized.Even if most don't understand why, though some will bullshit that fapping to her is the only way of expressing your love, which is just meh.
Also, the girls were all designed to be sexualizing. I mean, come on, Rika and Satoko, two lolis, live together and sleep in the same bed. Rena doesn't wear panties and Mion is always lewd.
And Hanyuu is always horny.
>>140568398
>Also, the girls were all designed to be sexualizing.
Only if you're lewd minded. That's the same logic used by yuri/yaoifags. In a sense you've got your "lewdgoggles" on.
>>140568595
>Only if you're lewd minded.
I said 'designed to be', I never said that they were sexualized. That's the key difference. Ryukishi always teases but never makes them that way.
Unless you've only watched the anime.
>>140568398
Yeah, you don't fap to someone you respect. To me most of the cast in Higurashi feel like someone close to me, so I can't fap to them even if I try. I only fap to characters I don't give two shits about, like some whore from a flavor of the month LN or ecchi show.
>>140568595
I agree with you. /a/ likes to point at yurifags and fujoshi but most of the time they do the exact same thing with every show that has girls in it. Worst of all are the SOL show threads.

>Unless you've only watched the anime.

No. The anime fucks up the story hard and tries to turn it into generic edgy yandere shit, which is far from all there is to the VN. You'll be a lot more disappointed with the end if you read the anime than if you read the VN.

You can immediately know who is an animeonlyfag and who read the VN.
Everyone who's read the VN loves it because it's written by Ryukishi and follows his SoL style of being lewd but not explicit.
Though I would argue that a large part of why it gets shit is the fanservice episode. More specifically, the part with Rika. She's beloved by everyone and then you make her act lewd. A lot of people felt weird and uncomfortable. Following my unspoken rule >>140568398 that people can't sexualize someone they care about.
Everything else in Kira is great. The designs are great, the jokes are closer to the VN than anywhere else in the anime,
People bitch that Kira is a perversion, that it's not like S1 which was all about mystery and murder. It's just wrong!
Little do people know that it's closer to the source material than the anime itself.
>>140578292
Pretty much this. It's disgraceful to see people say that.
>>140578142
She's pretty fun. Amazing voice.
For example of how Kira is better. Chie is never mentioned in the first season or kai. In rei, during the pool episode, there's a joke that she likes curry and holds T-sticks the same ways Ciel holds swords. But nothing is really mentioned about who she is and the joke likely goes over people's head because she was never really in the show.
In Kira, she's there again, during the mahojo episode, insane, and bitches that everyone should eat her curry with the same tone as she does in the VN.
It's great.
Also, look at those uniforms. It's a real waste to never use them again.

Hinamizawa was a gameboard played by Featherine and Lambda. Featherine bonks her horn and the game continues forever. Until Bernkastel is born and guides the Rika side to victory.
And in the prime universe where Tohya writes his stuff, all of Matsuribayashi has occured previously.
Correct me if I'm wrong. I think the stuff about Featherine is just guess work.
>>140583181
>Higurashi was simply a fictional story written by Tohya
No. There are references to Higurashi and Hinamizawa. Rosa even brings Maria there on vacation.
In simple terns, the implications of Higurashi is simply that Rika won and is the main kakera world, Bernkastel escaped her chains after Rei and went into the meta. You'll notice that witches attach themselves to literary concepts rather than enter the story themselves. They're both part of the story and not.
Though if you want to go all theory and meta, Akasaka wrote a book called Higurashi no naku koro ni.
Make that what you will.
One day you'll learn to love Bern.

Restricting Erika from everything she wants is what makes her so endearing.
>>140583448
>Until Bernkastel is born and guides the Rika side to victory.
Almost accurate but no. Bernkastel doesn't help Rika, she sits in the sidelines until Rika gives her a name in Rei, so that Hanyuu has a new friend but Bernkastel escapes (she says so in her song) into the meta and hates that she never got a happy end like Rika.
The only relationship Tohya has to Higurashi is that Battler mentions in ep 1 that he read Higurashi. People associated, a long long time ago, that Tohya's broken memory created Lambda by mixing both blondes in Higurashi. This explains why Lambda acts and has memories of Satoko yet is clearly like Miyo.
But this, imo, was wrong since witches do exist and we cannot know what was written in those stories that were posted on the internet. What *we* read isn't the same as what characters in the story read on what Tohya wrote.
>>140583513

To further, the manga makes it explicit that Bernkastel doesn't have a name. Rika and her meet in ep 7 in the meta. The VN is more some unknown person talking to the reader specifically but the manga is different. Rika remarks that Bernkastel looks similar. Even though Bernkastel agrees, she notices that she's not like Rika and doesn't have a name.
Rika also does not remember this conversation.
This thread is over.
>>140583787
>The VN is more some unknown person talking to the reader specifically but the manga is different.
That's interesting, you're claiming that the person that talks in the intro to Minagoroshi is an "unknown person". I have no idea who it would be if not Bernkastel. An unnamed Bernkastel as you pointed out.
Don't you think Bern or this unknown person helps out a lot then? She pieces together the XYZ theory and drops major hints.
I think the piecing together of events in Matsuri is also her doing. Because how else would these pieces be viewed and fitted together?
This is unrelated, but I think the concept of a "reader" being canonically inside the story and talked to is kind of interesting. A literal reader self-insert.
ARE YOU DENYING MY AUTHORITY?!
>>140584327
I always assumed it was some unknown person the first time I read to ep 7. You're given clues that it's Bernkastel at the end of ep 8 but nothing really stood out at the beginning of ep 7 that it was Bernkastel. Hell, who is this Bernkastel even? Just some name on some poetry. You connect two and two when Rika tells K1 about some poem but you still don't entirely know who is this Bernkastel.
>Don't you think Bern or this unknown person helps out a lot then? She pieces together the XYZ theory and drops major hints.
I don't think so. She points out obvious truths and connections but never really goes further than spelling what is obvious. If anything, it helps the idiots who haven't been clued in and nothing more.
>A literal reader self-insert.
Yes, it is very interesting. Hell, in Umineko, Bernkastel breaks the 4th wall to speak directly to you. Ryukishi really likes that.

>>140584728
This is just a guess but maybe she was moving pieces into place in the meta. In Minagoroshi every possible event happens to converge on the same kakera. Was that really a coincidence or was she moving stuff around in the background?
What do you make of the whole Featherine/Hanyuu connection? Hanyuu has existed for thousands of years. She got her horn chipped by her daughter right? Featherine got her horn chipped at some point and lost her memory. Was it during the Hinamizawa game? Was Featherine ever confirmed to be the other player that Lambda fought against?

Bernkastel, at that time, was not a witch and I don't see any evidence of her doing anything. If anything, I would argue that most of the piece moving was done by Lambda.
>In Minagoroshi every possible event happens to converge on the same kakera.
That was done by Hanyuu.
>What do you make of the whole Featherine/Hanyuu connection?
It's very complicated. I'll explain later.
Long story short, imo, Lambda damaged Featherine's memory disk, the broken piece became Hanyuu and was unable to help Rika in her problem. Hanyuu used Rika as her miko to get power from the paranoia of people concerning the curse to make Rika jump kakera.
Higurashi was a game between Lambda and Featherine.
>Was Featherine ever confirmed to be the other player that Lambda fought against?
Yes, it's the badge she wears in Umineko.
why didn't they just take hinamizawa and push it somewhere else?
>>140586352
That's where it gets confusing though. Rika has known Hanyuu since the moment she was born. And Hanyuu has had that horn crack for a thousand years. Hanyuu becomes a "piece" for Featherine but Hanyuu has always been there. Haanyuu gets her horn injured long before Featherine gets hers injured. The timeline is all messed up.
>>140586858
Witches can change the world at will. Let me give you a simpler example. The relationship between Hanyuu and Featherine is similar to that of Erika and Bernkastel. Erika has a history. She was with a guy, traveled the world, etc, but she was created by Bernkastel. That happened. This is similar.
Featherine's broken piece simply affected history to how it lead up to the catbox in Hinamizawa.
>>140586610
Are you stupid? The places where we grew up retain memories, feelings and a piece of ourselves. It has an enormous and deep symbolisms. The water, the ground, the smell and the air of that place is unique and irreplaceable. You can't let it go because is like a part of your flesh and an important part of your own story. I think that's how they feel about their home. They just can't leave.
I WANT TO SLEEP
>>140587035
Witches don't exist, silly. Santa-san doesn't exist either... Sorry
Why is she so salty?
>>140587315
Hmm??? Who?
>>140587035
Fuck, that's right. Featherine is a "creator witch". She's also a stand in for R07. So maybe the entire when they cry world was created from scratch by Featherine to resemble a game. Then Lambda comes in. She's not a creator witch but she can manipulate things to give her certain success. She creates the narrative of the Hinamizawa mystery. Originally Hanyuu doesn't have that scratch. But after the incident she "always had it".
The incident where Featherine loses her memory is like the world losing it's God.
>>140587425
I'm sure this has been discussed a million times already.

>>140587425
Featherine is more of a stand in for mystery writers, including Ryukishi, but mostly Agatha Christie. Do not mix witches and their worldly counterparts. Ikuko is both Featherine and not her.
>>140587663
>Are you?
Sometimes. What about you, dumb anon?
*this* is a stand in for Ryukishi. It's really hard to tell though. He's hidden really well in the story.

3D Ryukishi is better.

Read it but then stop before the final answer. There's a conclusion that basically gives out who's the murderer. Don't read that and see if you can find out yourself. It's honestly not really obvious though there are some obvious clues.
>mfw I've bought the Oriental Express and The The Murder of Roger Ackroy but still haven't started reading them.
>>140588301
Salt and rage? I enjoyed all those threads. Its called a joke.

I didn't. You know what I think about those "pictures" and I would never put that person in shame, like you did.

>>140589068
Sorry, I mean. The person you reply to is him. I just wanted to ask.
>>140589108
Oh.
Rikafag acted high and mighty a few months ago about how he had some plan that'd destroy /ghost/ and make a lot of people upset, but it seems he chickened out.
>>140588820
Hey, is this >>140589233 true?
>>140588574
Oh no, Orient is a bad one to know the ending to.
It's still worth reading because the characters are fun.And how Poirot goes about dealing with the murderer(s) that literally surround him is interesting. Reminiscent of Umineko actually.
>>140588808
I honestly got bored of /ghost/ and thought it wasn't worth the money. My masterplan was just to make it implode on itself by requesting actually good drawings (ranging price of 50-150$ per drawing, and to just fuck with some, I would go up to 200-500$) and have a fake tripname. Then, as I start getting everyone to suck my dick, I fuck shit up, get more commissions on Rika herself, hint that I've become friends with myself and see /ghost/ implode on itself.
I also basically got the IP address of half a dozen people from /ghost/ but figured it wasn't worth freaking the fuck out of people and drop that plan. I was half tempted to just either go to their house and sticky a drawing of Rika at their door and run away after ringing the door bell, or just Molotov their house, but that felt meh since I don't really care about most people.
I specifically decided to target three of the most annoying shitposters on /ghost/. Two of them were from the US (phoenix arizona and Connecticut, one was from south of France, and another one was from Argentina.
So, yeah. It would have been a pretty fun troll idea but got into a bunch of trouble with someone and got sidetracked with doing my plan.
Three part plan. Create more bullshit in the drawthreads, create paranoia and reveal I was behind it all. My hint was 'something /ghost/ hates more than me, which the answer was envy. Someone figured it out but wasn't sure.
But now, I just don't care.
>>140589427
Wow.
That's incredibly lame.

>>140589680
Oh, right, I forgot he was living on mommy and daddy's money. That's still a beyond stupid thing to do just to prove you're a "le master manipulator" and get a few people freaked out/annoyed.
>>140589427
You really hate them, huh?
>>140589809
He's just mad that it was proven that everyone there hates him and that his advances on the 3d there failed.
>>140589870

>>140589956
It's incredibly cute, probably the only good one.
>>140589487
My plan or decision not to see it through?
It was basically in the same time I was feeling good and optimistic, talking how I would I should just commission a translation of Monobeno from mangagamers and then you convinced me not to give a shit about others and I just felt that you were right. Fuck helping other people.
>>140589573
Nothing, I just wanted some small retribution and see people squirm. Nothing they did ever really annoyed me. Someone can to me with a way to get the IPs on /ghost/ and thought it might be a good way to just destroy /ghost/ for good.
>>140589809
Hate? Hahahaha, nah. I don't hate anyone. I just thought it would be funny if I did it.
>>140589956

>>140589870I can see a cursor.
>>140590057
>My plan or decision not to see it through?
Both. The plan is just stupid, and aside from spending time doing childish things like stalking people, none of it would bother anybody, and you're a pussy for hyping it up and then dropping it.
>>140590057
Oh well, It's a shame.
>>140590197

He's clicking her breast.
>>140590197
Maybe, maybe not. I found the plan hilarious. People are boring and, mostly, living somewhat boring lives. It would have been funny, but maybe that's just me. Seeing /ghost/ bitch more about drawthread drama while pulling the strings, create paranoia with some people who were the most vocal shitposters.
It's the reason I was somewhat tempted to just throw fire at their house but they didn't annoy me or made me hate them, so I felt that action was just exaggerated.
>>140590299He noticed that the cursor is on her breast and feels ashamed.

That's boring.
>>140590864
Best friendship.Though I'm extremely cynical in ep 7 when Rika said that she's still Satoko's friend because she keeps being interesting, even after 100 years. You get bored of everyone after a certain time. It just feels like a narrative reason for Rika to still like Satoko without showing how she's important to Rika.
>>140590342
I don't know what he did. Some insults? I know that story about those kids and I don't believe it. I think he was just lying to make himself a name or some stupid thing like that. He's good person, I know it.

>>140590910
It was horrifying.
>>140591245
Blargh. What a joke.
Everyone is disappointing the more you know them.
The only answer I have is that Rika actually lost Satoko many times before any of the events we see. In ep 8, we see that Satoko was going into the late stages of the syndrome and Takano was willing to cut her open.
Irie couldn't do it, and decided that he would run away with Satoko. Rika meets up with him basically the exact moment he starts to make up his plan of escape and tells him that if he tries to run away with Satoko, they'll both die. It's very likely that this happened many times in the early days Rika had to figure shit out. So, for a long period of time, it's very possible that Rika was without Satoko (say 5-10 years) and then figured out a way to convince Irie to save Satoko by sacrificing herself.
This lack of Satoko reinforced Rika's affection to protect Satoko and cherished being with her.
But Satoko still being interesting after 100 years? Bullshit.

>>140591273
>creepy things
Hahaha. Fucking idiot.
See, let me rephrase the context and add some obviousness that will be apparent to anyone who's read some WtC.
A kirinofag disliked me and offhandedly mentioned that the way I talked was vile. And, if she could, she would slap me using magic through the internet monitor.
I simply said that if she tried that, I would grab her hand and pull her to *my* side through the monitor and humiliate her publicly in front of others.
Now, what is that humiliation? I never said anything, I left it to the minds of people to imagine. Could it be rape? Some other terrible act? Who knows. And that, somehow, ended up being seen as 'creepy'.
People imagined their own creepiness. People, especially waifufags, are such fucking crybabies without a single backbone. It's just pathetic and sad.
>>140591618
That is a lot of projecting based off simple assumptions. I heavily disagree.
>>140591835
Is that true?
>>140591901
Let me find the post.
>>140591835
Please restrain from talking about /ghost/ drama in the Higurashi threads.
>>140591618
>Bullshit
Who's to say? Only Rika can say that.
Hanyuu is the same way. Hanyuu never got bored of existing only to Rika. Satoko is to Rika what Rika is to Hanyuu. The terror of being alone was much stronger than any boredom.
>>140591967
NO. I don't want to.
Also, by humiliation, it might be as casual as just dressing up in a maid outfit. The worst fears as those you imagine.
>>140591847
It's just a theory, not that I even believe in it since duality requires me to refute it.
The 4th year of the curse involves Rika's parents to die. But this can only happen if Rika decides to let herself be experimented on to save Satoko. And this can't happen if Rika doesn't convince Irie.
So Rika must have convinced Irie a long time ago for the curse to continue, since Rika's parents always die, as Rika says in Rei.
So, by that logic, Rika was always with Satoko the entire time.
>>140591901
Of course, and it's hilarious.
>>140591835
You also said she'd like it because she's a masochist and insinuated that masochists tend to cheat, and how funny it'd be because she's a girl. It's funny how much you desperately try to appear likable. Oh well, end of drama talk for good now.
