Exactly. The film motoko looks like an android yet also very human. I completely agree on her eyes. They are absolutely piercing and cold. The hair is jet black and short so it doesn't get in the way. Bold lines break up her figure to look more stark.
SAC Motoko just looks like a human with enhancements. She's more soft around the edges. It's not bad but the film design is simply better.

There really are so many better 3DPD actress to use than ScarJo. She doesn't have the looks of Motoko, she doesn't have a cold nature (her closest role would be Black Widow but even then she's too soft), and her voice isn't authoritative at all.

Oshii's interpretation of the Major is an interesting one, but I feel like he went too far. They are almost completely different characters. SAC's Major is like a hybrid of the manga and the movie.
Oshii's Major's body design matches her personality extremely well, as does the manga's Major. The manga's Major has to deal with a lot more situations and characters than Oshii's Major, requiring to be less of a silent brooder. Oshii's Major is an excellent soldier; the manga and SAC's Major is an excellent leader.

Oshii's Major was barely even human, so her waxing philosophical about her own inhumanity was inherently boring. She had virtually no personality beyond "I am very thoughtful and can shoot guns," which comes up a lot in Oshii's work.
The manga's Major leaned slightly too heavily on slapstick and goofiness but at least she felt like a person slowly losing herself to cyberization rather than a drone who never knew if she was human in the first place.
SAC's Major is the perfect fusion of the two.
Looking back I deeply dislike both Oshii films. They're amazing technical accomplishments but they're full of paper cutouts talking philosophy. His wankery worked for Patlabor II and Lum because while he diverged from the tone of the original work he kept enough of the character in to keep you invested.

Sometimes that works, though. Reimagining Annie as a black orphan stays true to the original, because an orphaned black girl occupies the same socioeconomic position a frizzy-headed Irish kid did back in the 1920s-30s. Reimagining the Seven Samurai as the Magnificent Seven worked because a disparate group of gunmen-for-hire in the lawless Wild West is similar to a bunch of ronin during the conflicted Sengoku period. Reimagining Unforgiven as Yurusarezaru Mono worked because both Clint Eastwood and Ken Watanabe play aging warriors thrust back into combat during an era where their kind are dying out. Hell, they even sub in a half-Ainu for a black guy to keep up the racial tension.
A "whitewashed" Ghost in the Shell would be all right as long as it was similar to the above films.

People would be way less mad about Scarlet's The Major if they just changed her fucking name to make it western. All You Need Is Kill did it and it worked out fine.
If you're going to do a westernized adaption don't meet it halfway. Either fully embrace it and make the setting fit your cast or stick to the source and pick an actual asian actress for the lady with a very Japanese name.
