We now know for sure that it's serious and they're not going to play a bait and switch on us. I'm really excited to see the mystery unfold, I love shows that keep me on the edge of my seat each week like this.
This is something that has been bugging me for a while.
In episode 1, the Sarushima is parked next to Harekaze before it sets out, right as Moka and Mike are talking about their ship assignments.
But why? There isn't dock next to it where you could load in personnel and supplies. Only place where you could possibly get off the ship is the Harekaze itself.
The Sarushima could also not be simply passing by, as it's a dock bay closed on all three sides.
What if they boarded the Harekaze at this point and switched out the torpedoes for live ammunition and sabotaged the engine?
Ten minutes later and I'm still shaking from the episode. This show is managing to make me afraid even though nothing major happened yet. But it just feels like a ticking bomb.

My problem is that I can't see how 12 episodes of girls ship trying to be a SoL but suddenly getting attacked by a random ship of the week while being set up and nobody knows or even tries to figure out what's going on will end up anywhere interesting. The Nico ratings being down to 75% approval imply that some Japs think the same way.
I'm all for grim SoLs, but you need to pace yourself better if you want to get that working properly. This show is all over the place and despite it having a billion cute girls (which is something I usually love) I can't care about any of them because I don't have enough time to pay attention to them.
tl;dr I hate this kind of setting where people are unjustly set up for reasons not even they understand. Please solve it already so I can focus on appreciating the cute girls. Thank you.

Not really. The fact that it builds character interactions alone means that there is a point, and it isn't that uncommon for SoL shows to have some sort of plot or setting, even though it might not get touched too often. Wasn't Sora no Woto like this, for example, at least for the earlier half?
This show definitely isn't 100% SoL, but it does have a decent amount of SoL-like scenes. That's my point. My complaint is how it feels like there's some sort of unbalance between the easygoing and the tense parts, I'm not sure exactly what the show is trying to do but I hope that gets sorted out eventually (preferentially it gets a bad reputation and sales start to suffer because of that).

Well, in that picture they are very much docked next to the dock, so I'd assume that's how you'd do it.
Also, they explicitly show how the Sarushima starts moving from next to the Harekaze instead of the dock behind. So they'd have to be next to the dock, then go forwards a bit, stop there and continue moving. Which seems a bit illogical.
