Late night anime is more about producers pushing their own shitty voice actors and favorites now which means less space for older veteran actors that frankly will cost way too much to hire. He's likely to turn up in some games and day time anime but other than he's just not marketable enough as far as todays producers are concerned. The industry and it's business model has also changed substantially in the last 3 years especially so he's not the only one finding himself out of a job lately. Better get used to it is all I can say as you're likely to see a dozen or so more Yuki Kaji roles before you see another Wakamoto in anything big and heavily marketed.

Well a lot of industry veterans have sounded off on it but it's clearly not about what you can bring to the table acting chops wise with the current generation but what talent agency and producer you're affiliated with and how much they want to push you. Also if you're ugly seriously good luck getting work.
That's just a small aspect of how overwhelming commercialism, cross marketing and production committee politics has made so much of modern popular anime just kind of shitty to me once you strip away all the hyping and waifuism and what not. There's a lot of what's going on with Japans media scene, politics and socio-political makeup that is just kind of shitty and "crisis-mode" period and I feel there's going to be a long overdue crackdown and oversight applied to it all once shitlords like Abe are finally out of office which I have to hope is next election considering him, his party and their politics of greed, xenophobia and nationalistic chest thumping are driving the countries economy into the ground and current societal trends kind of have to change if Japan is going to stay relevant to the worlds socio-economic makeup. There's a reason why the anime industry kind of needs investment from the likes of Netflix and foreign companies to save it's ass at this rate.

CV celebrity is nothing new. Superstars have been around since the 1980's, when Akira Kamiya hogging all the main male roles every anime season.
It's more annoying now because skill and ability are less important than age and marketability. Since the industry is built on a meta fantasy sold to otaku, you can't have past prime girls or whores voicing anime. That shit won't sell in many main roles after a CV's popularity has faded.
But it's a lot better for men. Hosoya is a good example since he's still going strong long after Katanagatari. Katsuyuki Konishi stopped getting lead roles about 4-6 years ago, but he still finds regular work.

The same goes for Fumihiko Tachiki (Kaiji narrator for you fags), and one other iconic voice I can't exactly recall. They are staples of Japanese TV and aren't limited to anime.
