They do A LOT. but it's easily explainable because each zombie fiction has it's own rules.

He cut himself to make a bait, that's it.
And complains about the virus are kind of unnecessary right now since it's some kind of magic virus that makes armored hearts in few moments and details are scarce so far.
But hey, we're on /a/ where 'complain loud, complain often, waiting for more details is for pussies' rules apply.

This is anime, where shallow cuts usually produce fountains of blood and losing 15 - 20 liters (from the looks of it) won't even slow people down.
Sure kabaneri might go for a bit more realistic approach but I'd say there's still some exaggeration.

I'm not particularly looking for justifications on either things, just saying this is a lot easier and *I thought* a lot more likely to get nitpicked on rather than the virus thing.
But I guess people might be more used to massive blood loses than zombie viruses.
