Yeah, somehow, for all his stereotypical shonen hot-bloodedness (plus idiocy), he might be the least dense character of his archetype, at least in terms of romance with his love interest.
Characters like Yugo are meant to be singlemindedly focused on his goal of going to the Tops, but in ARC-V, his goal is a bit broader, it's to go with Rin to the Tops. As such, he probably had some progress on the 'with Rin' part, which becomes 'relationship with Rin', resulting in a dumb, goofy, master-of-one shonen kid to have some game with his gal.
I wonder if they'll have some 'personal time' 'fixing the bike' after they reunited at the end of ARC-V, which will take quite a bit of time.
