Whether amourshipping goes canon or not, there's gonna be a glorious NaruHina-tier (perhaps even greater, depending on outcome) shitstorm.
In terms of the Ash/Serena ship versus the Ash/Misty ship, the former is the most heavily pushed ship in the anime's history when the show generally shies away from romance, while the latter is still being clung to by desperate, delusional echo chamber dwellers and people who haven't watched the show or played the games since Pokémania.
If amourshipping (the Ash/Serena ship) goes canon, we'll see the last bastion of Pokéshippers (the Ash/Misty ship) finally stop pretending as though there's even a shadow of a chance (though really at this point they're clinging more to an artificial reef than a ship).
If amour doesn't go canon, then the writers will have basically ramped and armored this ship up for the past three years, even sinking all possible opposing ships, only to send it careening over a cliff like an unfinished roller coaster without nearly enough warning. The backlash would be monumental.
And that's why, even if you don't ship, it's worth it to track what this series is doing to prepare for the inevitable, fabulous meltdowns from either one side or the other.

Like I said above, you're taking a single moment and expanding it, rather than seeing it as a single moment. Yes, if he continued behaving as brave and competent as he was in that scene for 20+ minutes it'd be out of character, but that's not the case. We're just seeing a single moment.
If you pay attention in that flhasback, Ash was supposed be searching for a Pokemon and yet he completely forgets about it when he helps Serena and takes her back to the camp. If that got developed into a full story, we could easily get a goofy scene where he realizes that right afterwards. but because that scene is focused on Ash's headstrongness, which was always there, it obviously won't come up in a short flashback.
