Just watched the first episode of the Ace Attorney anime and I'm excited to see more.
Animation and art could be better, but I'm just glad this is finally happening. What's /a/'s thoughts on it?

See, I think the pacing and everything was just because they wanted to fit the entire tutorial mission into one episode.
I'm holding off on judging it in that regard until I see how they handle Turnabout Sisters, because that's probably my favorite case and if they fuck it up I'll definitely drop it.
I've only played the first game last year, though, so maybe my opinion isn't very viable. Need to pick up the rest, but I've been too busy to get them lately, I'm just looking forward to seeingRedd Whiteget torn to shreds in court.

Besides being extremely faithful, it's unremarkable.

Athena's Mood Matrix can be fun and useful, but in DD it had zero fucking penalty for mistakes. It's also technically the same magic shit as Apollo's (listening to heart shit, I believe her tech is build exactly around her magic), so it's bullshit that Blackquill double-standards it with Apollo.

Art and animation is poor. Kaji Yuki is a terrible voice actor and doesn't suit Phoenix's voice at all.
The pacing was off but that's probably because it's the first episode, I'll give it a few more episodes until I decide if it's shit or not.
The anime also doesn't provide all of the evidence to the viewer, so the viewer can't add up the evidence while they're watching; not giving all the clues completely defeats the point of the mystery genre.
Because of the thing with the evidence it just feels like the evidence is coming out of their asses as they weren't there to begin with.
Hopefully Mayoi will make it better next episode.

The courtroom logic in episode one is light novel quality. While LN logic works for the general audience, this is a COURTROOM and that kind of superficial logic just doesn't work in that environment. I already watched with a sense of disbelief, but the LN logic in a courtroom really pushed me out my zone. Even in Detective Conan, if they have courtoom scenes, the logic used is not light novel type.

It's based off a game, and games usually don't convert to other mediums such as anime or tv sit downs, especially ace attorney where the "Ah ha!" moment's only come directly from the user playing it

It honestly feels like they're not even trying. The script is ridiculously lazy. They don't try to convert the "game-y" parts like contradictions to something that might logically fit in the moment. They don't bother explaining the absurdity of the court system in the Ace Attorney universe at all. The directing sucks. The music managed to suck somehow.

Poorly animated Wright running outside for some reason as sunflowers inexplicably devour the city is just such a ridiculous idea. Gives no idea to the casual viewer what the show will be all about
The ED is all right, very pro-Maya, though I'm just baffled as to why sunflowers are such a central theme in the OP and ED, it's not something I remember in the games

Athena generally just convinces the witness to change their testimony due to pointing out stuff though, rather than actually being used as evidence directly. There are a couple of exceptions though.

But the adaptation is bad. You can't call something a meme just because you disagree with it.
The animation and art are objectively bad, things are drawn off-model constantly, even in static shots. Object sizes are inconsistent from scene to scene, characters lose and gain facial details constantly and not for artistic purposes. Lots of still frames that are very obviously there to pad out scenes while dialogue occurs.
The pacing was terrible. The first episode jumps right into a case, offers very little context for it besides the 5 or so minutes they managed to put in and is then riddled with pointless flashbacks and constant halts in order to simulate Phoenix's thought processes.
The anime is also trying too hard to throw in elements from the game, like it's desperate for association. The confetti, Phoenix's case-solving, etc You can wave this away as the Ace Attorney setting being fucking bonkers but that's the charm of the video games that you're associating with the anime for no other reason besides the fact that the two products have the same name.
The video games get away with it because in spite of the frequent silly moments, the series as a whole is actually pretty dark and the inanity is meant to provide some levity. They're comedic in nature.
Confetti flying down from the ceiling doesn't work when there's no buildup and the stakes aren't established. There's no levity or pay off to be had because the first episode just rushes you through the starter court case.
I can somewhat forgive pacing because they're obviously trying to cram the tutorial chapter into the first episode but everything else I've seen (including trailers and the like) tells me this is going to be a very shoddy project. It doesn't however, excuse the anime for being a bad adaptation or excuse the bad first episode in general.
tl;dr Anime adaptations of games have a bad reputation precisely because they're usually pretty bad. Ace Attorney is no exception.

If it means anything to you though, Emma being in Apollo Justice makes that last case canon, so there isn't any reason to NOT animate it.
The only problem I have with the show is the palette and how they are designed really. Ace Attorney looks good with a darker palette.
