Are we meant to assume that the arcs intercept the box at 90 degree increments?
It seems to me that without that detail, it's almost impossible to determine an actual answer for this.

under these conditions, I got about 31.4 cm^2, after butchering some dp
>>
>>139631694
you should draw 2 lines to make a regular triangle.
>>
>>139631866
I don't see why you need other details.
The quarter-circles are inscribed in a square, so yes, you must assume that those are 90 degree arcs.

The actual answer is about 3.51, so you're close enough.

Actually it's pretty reasonable to ask for the proper units for a question based on a quantifiable solution, and if you can't provide one then the size of the square in question could be infinitely large or small.

That's well and good, however it's still not specified whether the solution to the question is based on the unit size or the formula, and if you were really that practiced in mathematics then you should know that both answers are valid however there are those who will attempt to make it a trick question by not specifying which they are asking for. It's ok if you didn't understand since it's more of a question of semantics rather than the questions that you are more accustomed to.

Ask either bird what the other bird would answer. Both birds will give the wrong answer so just take the other door.
>>
>>139633017
You ask a bird which door the other bird would say leads to heaven.

If the bird says the other bird would say the door on the left, you pick the door on the right or vis versa.

Why? If the bird is telling the truth, then the other bird is lying.

If the bird is lying, then the other bird would tell the truth and the lying bird wouldn't say which door it would actually say.

Both instances tell you to pick the door opposite the one it tells you.

Had to go to walmart real quick, but I didn't use that actually. This is pretty much what I did, but I'm too lazy to scan the paper or type all that shit out. I found the dimensions of the triangle inscribed in one corner of the shape, then I integrated to find the sliver of the circle. You don't really have to integrate though, you can just use the ratio of the circumference to find the area and then subtract the triangle, but that's less fun

You shouldn't need to from the /a/non's working. As all they did was take out a common factor of r in the first line of working. The method seems perfect, although what I find to incorrect is the length of the hypotenuse. I assume it's meant to be 4r rather than 3r which is just a minor mistake.
>>
>>139633214
The right cup goes down, not from the weight of steel, but the weight of water.
Even though it's not enough to overcome steel's weight to float it, buoyancy pushes the steel ball up. Equally and and oppositely, it pushes the water down. Effectively, the weight of the ball's volume in water's density has been added to the right cup.
Buoyancy pushes the ping pong ball up, and the water down, but the ping pong ball is attached to the cup that the water is also poured in, it cancels out. The left cup has only the marginal weight of the ping pong ball added.

What, because you can't tell if those 5 circles form a square or not?

If they do, then it should be possible to get 4r*sin(45) in terms of r, then add it up with all the other aligning r to add up to one of the sides.

Of course, I'm making the assumption that the top left 5 circles make a square, and the bottom circles aligns to make a side, but I think that sounds about right in order to make that shape without the circles overlapping.

Honestly, calculus can be really really simple or really fucking hard depending on who's teaching you and their ability to tie it to concepts that you already understand. The derivative is literally just the slope at some point and the integral gets a bit more difficult, but once you understand that what dx represents and the fact that the derivative of y as a function of x is dy/dx things get easier to understand

It's pretty straightforward to reason that the left is a closed system, but the right is not. The downward force of the steel ball is being reacted by the string/crane.

So the left is going to be heavier, because the ping pong ball's weight is being reacted out by the scale.

x = 4(the arc in yellow + the triangle in blue)
the arc in yellow = 1/12×πr^2 - (the triangle in red)
the triangle in red = 1/2×r^2×sin(π/6) = 1/4×r^2
the arc in yellow = 1/12×πr^2 - 1/4×r^2 = (π-3)/12×r^2
Also, the triangle in blue = 1/2×[(√3/2-1/2)r]^2 = (2-√3)/4×r^2
Therefore, x = 4[(π-3)/12×r^2 + (2-√3)/4×r^2] = (π/3+1-√3)r^2
from r=10
x = 100(π/3+1-√3) [cm^2]

step 1 for any physics or engineering computational problem: write down the fucking DE

step 2, take into account any spatial symmetries

step 3, use a finite difference approximation (if you're using an iterative or matrix inversion method, I am well aware there's a trillion fucking ways of doing things FD is just the most common and most simple)
