Didn't know the ED was by Rei Yasuda but it became immediately apparent when it started. Pretty good.
Something about the whole atmosphere seemed off about the anime. Like, it was always silly but I feel like the animation and VAs made it over the top silly and Phoenix cornering the culprit didn't feel nearly as intense as it does in the games.

I disagree with some of your comments; personally didn't think that it was silly enough. If we compare how the live action went down with its delightful campy atmosphere to this anemic mess it's actually kind of depressing. The seiyuu are doing their best but the performances almost come off as jarring when the visuals and direction are this sub-standard, which is probably why you thought they were over the top.
The first episode had six animation directors, a major warning sign that things are falling apart already so this is only going to get worse.

Shit opening aside, it feels like two studios worked on this one: guys who were making extra SoL moments like Phoenix going to courtroom on his bike that look like shit; and guys who worked on trials that honestly don't look half bad.
I am not saying it's good, play the fucking games that's the real stuff, I am saying I will have faith in this show to the bitter end because I feel like it might be salvageable just yet.
I think if animation outside trials was less quality and if trials themselves had more drive it actually would have been solid. Let's just hope first episode is merely a benchmark for future case adaptations to expand upon.
The one thing I really dislike is colors. It looks sterile and reeks of A-1, I prefer much warmer colors of pachinko cut-scenes.

A lot of common Japanese names are also words, they're used to this in everyday life, so it doesn't sound as weird as you think.
Also, the name puns in Japanese are much more subtle than the English version was, so figuring it out is usually a matter or hindsight and going "ooooh!", while the English puns are usually on the level of "Stabby McMurderson".

The movie was excellent, strangely, considering how different it was from the game. Probably because the director brought his own creative vision to the series to share with people. It also didn't really threaten the games as a replacement, just a crazy alternative.

Sure, they have done some few good things every once in a while. I loved Sora no Woto and there are others that were well animated like Subete ga, and Anohana but those are exceptions.
The problem they have is that Aniplex just shoves like 50% of their shows to them as if they were a mass production fabric. They always have at least one 1 show each season, sometimes even 4, and just one or two decent ones a year. It's probably not their fault, but you can't expect for them to do good in majority of the cases.

You know, the first case always had a special place in my heart. I loved it. I always remember how that "14 hour difference" because of timezone logic with the statue as evidence really blew me away.
I dunno, it was just so satisfying to show that contradiction. One of the better cases in the first game in my opinion.
Anyway, thinking about it, the anime is great so far. Apart from the frames, the anime is doing it's best to be true to heart to AA. I think the first ep was really enjoyable. I don't see the validity of people's disappointment with this adaption.

Ok just watched it.
Why was the worst animated part the OP? The actual episode's animation was serviceable, but that OP running sequence was hilariously bad.
Apart from that, I loved it. The animation never distracted me and was more than made up for by the game fan-service (green text boxes, witness testimony/cross examination + face cuts, the few music remixes, victory confetti). I was smiling the whole time.
I guess if you're not as much of a PW fan the flaws would be more glaring, but I'm satisfied.
