Not in a while it feels like. The last major wave of anime original hits all pretty much came at the top of the decade. Also when your top 4 best selling anime are all light novel adaptations 3 of which are about getting stuck in alternative fantasy worlds can people really wonder why there's so little variety and they keep making stuff with the same basic setup over and over again? There's maybe like 4 concepts that seem likely to make any money anymore and I'd like to think I'm exaggerating but I'm probably not. Fujobait all male casts with specific VAs, Idolshit, LN's about fantasy worlds and teen high school romance/melodrama harem shit. Quite often there's a mixture of these elements though which is what people call omnipandering now. Anything else pretty much needs a miracle or really good marketing campaign to sell in Japan.

The only real surprise to come out of the Top 4 list is that nobody expected KonoSuba to be the top selling first volume and people expected Phantom World to at the very least be nothing less than #2. I can see Kyoani getting back on board the fujo train or trying their hand at a trapped in a fantasy/game world concept for their next go around.

Nah, not even then. /a/ is sustained by the hopes for continuations or announcements of series in animated form that might or might not come for reasons no one really knows what gets decided on by the production committees.
Great series can sell very good and still not get a new season, because perhaps one of the sponsors simply wasn't satisfied with the revenue for the thing it did based on the amount of money put into it, or they all were actually satisfied and simply don't need to finance a second season at all.
We generally talk about disc sales, because the chances for a new season are most likely increased if the show earns back its investment through good enough disc sales. But they're never guaranteed.
Unless it's of course some superseller that sells discs above 50k on average. Then it would be dumb for the production committee to not immediately order a new season while that stuff is still the hot shit.
But even then, it might still not come to be, because of outside reasons.
tl;drl: It's complicated shit, and we all make educated guesses AFTER seeing what sells well and what doesn't.
And even then, we tend to get it wrong because most of us are just gaijins trying to understand nipponotaku behavior, and even nipponjin businessmen don't really grok nipponotaku behavior.
