when i showed these movies to my friends, they thought they were extremely boring and uninteresting.

do these movies not hold up for modern animation fans? I didn't feel bored at all by any of these.

do you not have friends that are mildly interested in anime, anon

do you want mine
>>
>>139275701
Your friends are just plebeians.

Everyone I know who has even a passing interest in anime has enjoyed those films to some degree.

Don't feel bad though, no friend can be perfect.
>>
>>139275701
op you need to go find new friends
>>
Tell your friends that they need their retalin before viewing these. Also when you actually mature and your brain develops, you might be able to process how amazing these are.....well not Akira because that was a mess.
>>
>>139275701
>modern animation fans
I'm confused do they like anime or just animation? Are you the autist who shows disney fans Jin Roh?

But this entire post is just bizarre are you lucid OP?
>>
Your friends are very likely the kind of people that think a movie to be interesting must be some kind of "american pie" variation, or some 80's style action movie with more explosions and random topless girls than dialogs.
>>
How did people extrapolate that his friends liked anime or even cared about it?
>>
>>139276040

Why would your dumbass self show your friends not interested in anime and anime movie you twit?

I can see why they'd think that.

Fuck off and go land head first into some concrete you fucking twit.
>>
>>139276040
i suppose i misworded it. they are mildly into anime and wanted to know what a few of my favorite landmark animated films are, and didn't like any of them. my question was more about why someone would find them boring or if what made a great animated movie in the past doesn't hold up.
>>
What's a rogot?
>>
>>139275701
Akira is certainly a little overrated but it's by no means a boring movie. GiTS and Mononoke are great. Your friends are just plebs who cannot use their brains.
>>
>>139276119
>Why are retarded people retarded?
Fuck off, OP
>>
>>139276119
The movies in OP are basically considered niche. Your friends are probably more into things like Naruto and One Piece.
I've watched those movies with parents and friends more than 10 years ago and still they were considering them boring and/or deprressing. Is not a matter of age, is the same reason why people is more attracted by a Michael Bay movie than something made by Stanley Kubrick.
>>
>>139276164
maybe i am continuing to misword. i will let the discussion continue either way
>>
>>139276119
Well none of them are perfect movies. Akira is confusing and can easily come across as a mess, GitS is pretty slow and so many things have ripped it off it probably doesn't feel as interesting, and Mononoke is Ghibli. All in all people have different opinions, try Sword of the Stranger or something less stylistic.

I think both of those are good. I found them fun to watch, but I don't see obtuse little art projects as anything more then fun experiences.

I'd never put a show like Tatami Galaxy or Trapeze anywhere near my 3x3.

Yeah, whatever you think best represents your tastes. There aren't strict rules. Some people make massive charts with a 3x3 for TV anime, anime movies, OVAs, and manga. Some people make them for OSTs, characters, OP/EDs.

Maybe for 15 year olds, those are three of the most widely known anime movies and are considered must watches for any semi-serious anime fan, as well as movies that anyone with an interest in film has seen.

>>139276947
Out of curiosity what are your top 5 anime films? I don't worship Akira or gits but I would easily put Mononoke-hime in Miyazaki's top 3. It and Spirited Away were his peak as a director and the most sophisticated projects he helmed

You're only talking about modern 2d american animation. Other continents do animated works and there's lots of great stuff done in the past. The cultural aspect is a fraction of what's interesting, it's the visual qualities the medium presents that attract people. Otherwise people would read japanese books and watch live-action japanese films more, they'd get more of japanese culture in those then they ever would in anime.
>>
>>139275701
Your friends probably don't like anime.
Stop trying and keep your anime fetish behind closed doors the way it should be.

Most Japanese anime is contracted to Korea. You mokes need to watch licensed anime where the credits are translated. I guess fansubbers don't do this because it would add and extra week.
>>
>>139277458
But Korean names are generally written in English in Japanese credits.

>>
>akira
movie is pretty bad. Tries to fill too much of the manga into two hours which is simply impossible. Animation is great though.

>ghost in the shell
story is pretty shit. Some great concepts and an interesting way of handing the mind body debate, but philosophical technobabble written by someone who doesn't understand philosophy or technology pretty much pisses all over any possiblity of good execution. Great animation and music.

>Princess Mononoke
Best of the three here. Handles its nature themes well compared to the others, but the themes are still heavy handed. Animation techniques and creature designs, while great at times, are over ambitious. Miyazaki has no understanding of the phrase "less is more."

Its a shame that all these movies are actually not that great because the directors for these movies all understand what animation is used for. Making a SoL anime is stupid when you can achieve the same exact result with live action where as Princess Mononoke or pretty much any Miyazaki film is impossible to make live action. Come to think of it, all these movies are pretty much flawed by the directors wanting to cram as much as they can which has the inverse effect of making every element watered down.
>>
>>139277530
No they aren't apparently. But a clue would be the name of the studio, which often is in English. If you see Studio Easter for example, it's Korean.
>>
>>139275701
Akira might be a little gory and depressing for someone just getting started and being a novice they probably wouldn't be able to tell how good the animation is. Mononoke is entry level Ghibli tier so if they don't like that we're in trouble already.
But if I had a friend who said they were interested in anime and they didn't like GitS, I would tell them anime probably isn't for them.

Having anime fan friends is overrated. If you've got a bro who will sit down and riff on some shows with you that fine. But for the most part irl anime friends fall into too many trappings of autistic anime fans to be enjoyable.

>>139277289
I don't have a 3x3 because I find the whole concept rather pointless. I don't really have favorites, I find things to enjoy in most anime I watch. Anime I don't enjoy I tend not to watch. And why should I or others care about what I like? The threads spur little discussion. /3x3/core is more of a phrase to describe people deciding to take anime very seriously, project their taste on to others, generally call each other shit while jerking themselves off to the ~100 shows, ~50 movies, and ~50 OVAs that get posted over and over in every thread (most of which I like btw)

>>139277661
Oshii understands the philosophy and theology in his films, but his execution lacks subtlety, and, frankly, the topics he covers are rather passé. From that perspective I consider patlabor 2 his best work because how it captures sociopolitical anxieties of Japan in the early 90s. It has the best cinematography of any of his films. Most importantly, it features the two best patlabor characters
