Haruhi created what she wanted, not just using her powers alone. She wanted aliens, so she created a message that aliens understand that would summon them. She wanted time travellers, so she wrote the thesis on time travel that ended up in the hands of a boy who would one day invent the time machine. Haruhi has the power to twist time and space, but most of the time she gets what she wants via far simpler ways.

One thing that always bothered me with Haruhi was someday in the rain, I like the episode but they let Tanigawa write an episode and it's just Yuki sitting around for half the run time. Is Tanigawa an absolute madman or was there a lack of budget or something?

So what makes this series stand out from other SoL? Yes, I've already watched and no, I won't mind if you write me a wall of text or whatever.
Haruhi is a great show not only because of it's structure, layout, plot, etc., but also because as soon as it acknowledged how mainstream and popular it became, KyoAni broadcasted Endless Eight to scare away all the fedorafags, weebs, secondaries, etc. so that the truely knowledgeable and elite fans could enjoy it without the show being swarmed with leddit/mal tier fags. And they even rewarded the supreme fans with the Disappearance movie, leaving the ragefags with nothing but their shit taste to themselves as they watch bleach or naruto or whatever shit they fucked themselves to. It happens a few days before Disappearance. Yuki is sitting alone while people are not paying attention to her. Kyon is alone too and works for Haruhi, but he gets some kind of "reward" at the end when Haruhi waits for him. Yuki doesn't, she's thoroughly ignored and Kyon doesn't even understand the cardigan that was put on him during his sleep was hers.

It's a mash-up of different genres that blend together pretty well. It's self-aware and respects the watcher so it doesn't shove bullshit into your throat. Character development is well-done, it's slow and you can miss it if you don't pay attention to the details, but that makes it more believable and it avoids being too obnoxious.

Their quality and directing has done nothing but get better.
Their issue on some of their more recent shows was the material they work with.
It's not like every show they make nowadays is bad.
Hibike was fantastic, so was Tamako Love Story. And those were only in the past 1-2 years.
If nothing else, just make sure Yamada and the directors responsible for the Disappearance movie works on S3. And you're golden, any issue anymore would be the if the remaining Haruhi LN source material was mediocre.

She is what you would call a "Classic Tsundere".
Someone who is unlikable in the beginning, but slowly changes to being a nice person over a period of time.
The fact that the anime was aired out of order makes it confusing. But basically her major turning point was when Kyon nearly hit her, and she ended up changing her ways in the school festival.
