Season 2 was painfully shit and retroactively damaged the integrity of Season 1.
I didn't like Hei x Yin either. He had actual chemistry with the cop lady and a backstory with Amber. Not that I didn't like Yin, but I felt their pairing was forced.
S1 had so many good episodes though. The one with the emotionless would-be rapedoll and the wannabe gangster was A++++. Maybe it's time for a rewatch.

It was well done and even foreshadowed since the first episodes in the show.
Besides Hei hates Amber's guts for hiding the whole thing with his sister and Misaki didn't knew much about Hei and he wasn't interested for the most part, and season 2 made it painfully clear it was barely just a one-sided thing. Yin was probably the only female Hei was in good terms with and actually cared about on a different level.

It would've been good if it had another 13 episodes to actually explain the plot instead of being a 26 episode series that suddenly ended halfway.
S1 is likeable because:

I'm running only on a years old memories but from what I remember there weren't that many contractors in S2 for them to just show them and kill them, the ones I remember all had their compensation and did pay it constantly. The pedo, magician, the lightsaber lesbian (hell, she even kissed Hei during their fight and that was basically at the end of the season), did I just managed to forget a whole bunch of cannon fodder contractors?

Actually Gaiden makes a good point explaining Hei became depressed because he was in love with Yin and really wanted to be with her, like literally guy just lost his girlfriend and the only person left from S1 that understood him, leaving him basically all alone. By then most of his team was dead and only Yin was left, so there's that.
Basically he said fuck it all and became a drunk hobo because he didn't had any friends/girlfriend left, despite his efforts to save them. Which was his only motivation to go on, because the only reason he got back into work was because he heard Yin was still alive.
And I agree that S2 was shit but Gaiden was pretty good, if only Suoh didn't happen it'd be a good tie-in to S2.
