The basic premise is that there are areas of the world where objects can't fight and conventional wars occur, so ace pilots show up. The setting is essentially airspace B7R.

I'm somewhat disappointed /a/, even if the thread has mostly focused on high performance jet fighters. Though it unapologetically used some magic physics I think it still ended up being one of the better combat-pilot-focused anime ever made. For most of the fighting the only real thing their special flight system did vs a WWI fighter was allow them longer range and VTOL, it didn't actually really change anything in terms of performance. I think it was one of the only ones I've seen that actually even touched on the reality of g-force problems in dogfighting. In fact late-war WWII fighters would definitely outperform the vanships tactically under many conditions, so I think it still counts as an interesting air battle anime.

Regardless though, like it or not anime is a commercial production and budgets are a reality for almost anything produced, 3DCGI plays a role in that. I'll admit, it did a good job bridging the gap between the hardcore flight-sim autist and average consumer with mouseaim, but everything they've done since patch 1.37 (the patch that increased grind by tenfold) has been detrimental to the overall game's enjoyment. Eh, it was a Soviet ordered agricultural plane (cropduster basically) that they told the Poles to make for them. And they added a bunch of retarded requirements, like absolutely insisting it HAD to be a jet no matter what. As a cropduster being very slow and carrying big chemical tanks is the whole point, but demanding a jet engine just because "jets are cool lol" in a place it made no sense naturally was complete uneconomical. They could have done a lot better just using the latest prop stuff. Top speed was like 120 mph IIRC.
Not poland's fault though, jet is what USSR high command wanted and that's what they got. Frankly I think they did a pretty good job getting something semi-functional together at all given the ludicrously conflicting requirements, shoestring budget, and schedule with "or else off to the gulags" hanging over their heads.

Against the radars of the time they were basically stealth aircraft because they were just wood and cloth and has practically no radar echo, plus they were so fucking slow (like ~70mph cruise, 95-100mph top speed) and flew so low that they were literally below the stall speed of basically everything else in the air which made them a nightmare to actually try to engage.

that's a great in-story justification, but you just know that in any newly produced fighter jet show the real world justification for a female lead is purely fiscal and there'd definitely be a greater % of female pilots (in far more prominance) than is warranted.

Different anon here, responding to your first reply. I think I'm on the same boat as you, in that I too think it's an interesting concept when a pilot isn't visibly shown. I find that it opens more to the imagination, and the "character" is translated through the aircraft he/she pilots.
Now it's definitely more difficult to pull off without it being a boring and without investment, as the other anon mentioned - but I think it's an interesting idea when done properly.

Internal monologue also works if you don't want your directly interacting with other characters. No, but they are very common tropes in 'real' mecha anime. Enough that they make up a good deal of the genre's identity. Ace Combat, especially the trinity, emulates a lot of these elements.
