Heavy Object's author has a spinoff about a cute ace pilot girl ready to go, so if that ever gets adapted we'll have the ace combat anime we always wanted.
The basic premise is that there are areas of the world where objects can't fight and conventional wars occur, so ace pilots show up. The setting is essentially airspace B7R.

The F-35 is just the natural culmination of that, and the only reason its failures are getting more attention this time around is because we live in the age of the internet.
